Magical cottage on Little Butternut Lake
January 2, 2015
This lovely log cabin (really more of a home than a cabin) was everything we hoped for in a peaceful family holiday retreat to the woods. The owner, Bill, was a thoughtful and kind but non-intrusive host. Everything was perfectly clean, with a well-stocked and organized kitchen, extra blankets, and even a huge two-story tree for Christmas. Decorations were cute and tasteful without being artificially cutsey, with many handmade mementos and photos of the family, which made us feel like we were visiting old family friends. The home is very comfortable and with the two-story loft and huge windows feels airy and spacious. There were several small side rooms and spaces to spread out and have some private time, as well as a cozy living and dining room with wood stove (in addition to central heat), with plenty of games, movies (of the family variety), TV channels, and CD player. No wifi, no phone service (yay!). The house itself is on the end of a dead-end road so although it is close to town and other civilization, it feels totally secluded on the property. You can't see any of the other houses on the lake. There is a really nice outdoor porch facing the lake -- we enjoyed it even in winter. Plenty of hiking trails around (and snowmobile trails which we did not use). There is a little town (Luck) only a few miles down the road with a decent full grocery store, a natural food coop (look for the locally harvested wild rice!), a couple of taverns, and other services. We saw wild turkeys, deer, tons of birds, and lots of animal tracks on the lake. Several people out ice fishing, too. We highly recommend this place for a winter or summer retreat. We can't wait for the opportunity to return. Thanks Bill and Lois!
