PEACE & QUIET

May 14, 2013

My husband 66 & I 57 found such enjoyment here doing absolutely nothing......simply watching the sky for eagles.... the water for boat crossings.....the landscape for deer......stoking the pit fire & soaking tub......cooking lovely meals with an inspirational view that made being stuck in the kitchen a delight ......eating, drinking & breathing in the ocean air..... Just about everything you could need is provided, kitchen lacked a few incidentals (storage wrap, foil, roasting pan, not much else) there was even a well seasoned cast iron skillet, my favorite...... Our great dane Rommel could walk about off leash; yet slept through the deer visiting..... We watched the Rhododendrons bloom out in our 7 day stretch of beautiful unseasonably warm weather.....Gorgeous pink at the pit fire & romantic red from the master deck..... We WILL return!.... A note to help others: the stairs to the upper 2 bedrooms could pose a problem for elders, narrow, shallow stairs...... the steep terrain of the property is nicely terraced & eases you into more exercise than the Stairmaster, so allowing you to continue to eat all the proper vacation food...... laundry facilities are working & adequate but needed the wood stove to dry things thoroughly in less than 2 hrs..... if you're fussy about soaps of any kind; bring your own...... the deck is large & inviting but needed (my opinion) a comfy luxurious place to land & perhaps nap......next visit we will bring a hammock....The bed was all cotton sheets, a real plus for me with skin issues........THANK-YOU GRANT

Great rustic retreat

April 2, 2013

-Quiet hillside property -Nice fenced area for our 75lb dog to explore -Cozy den -Very comfortable bed -Wood fireplace and hot-tub made for a lot of fire-stoking! I smelled like smoke at the end of the weekend. Plenty of wood ready, though! -Kitchen appliances aren't the latest and greatest, but that's not what we were there for - they worked fine for us! -Responsive and friendly owner -Nice 8-mile biking loop on island's North side

Grant B.

Owner's reply:

Glad you enjoyed times by the real wood fires
Its a lot of work for us to get , split and stack all the firewood
We have an older gas stove with old fashioned pilot light so guests can cook if the
power goes out , which does happen here in the forrest on an island
Did you know that you cannot bake in the newer gas oven if the power is out ?
Its always nice to bake a pie , cookies and warm up the kitchen if snowed in and power is out
.

Lovely Lummi Island escape

February 26, 2013

This was our second visit, and we had a lovey 4 nights on Lummi Island at this great place. It was great to relax in the hot tub, and later sit in the rocking chairs and be cozy by the wood stove. The place is great! Our dog enjoyed the fenced yard and the view from the deck - especially when the deer were walking up the road. The views of Mt Baker were glorious. The island has lovely hiking trails through the forest, and the beach by the church is public and easily accessed. The place is well set up. The kitchen is spacious and the bbq is nice. Grant is so welcoming and helpful. We want to make it an annual event.

beautiful setting

February 14, 2013

My boyfriend and I were looking for a romantic getaway and we found it in this property. It was rustic, had a beautiful wood burning fireplace, many unique features, cozy, and well equipped. We loved the setting of the property. It was very private, surrounded by trees, had a bit of a water view and the island itself was beautiful. Great value.

December 16, 2012

My husband and I enjoyed the stay on Lummi Island. The island, water, beaches are beautiful. The hot tub was wonderful on the chilly nights. The cabin comes decently furnished/clean, it feels more rustic than anything. The rooms are spacious, loved the hardwood floors. Sitting in the rocker in front of the fireplace was my highlight.

Quiet, rustic retreat

November 27, 2012

A nice, quiet location on quaint Lummi Island with a generous amount of space. A short drive from Downtown Vancouver Canada, door-to-door in 3 hours. The owner was by a few times as he was doing some work on the place but he wasn't too intrusive. The wood-fired hot tub was a bit tricky to light but worked as advertised. November was a very cold time to go as you do not get afternoon sun, but the wood-burning fireplace heated things up nicely, as did the hot tub. Would go again during warmer time of the year.

Heavenly getaway

November 20, 2012

We came up from Portland and stayed for two days with our golden retriever. This is a lovely two-story nicely finished log cabin with a homey feel but modern conveniences including wifi. There is lots of beautiful wood detailing throughout the cabin. Full kitchen with cookware and dinnerware, three different sleeping areas (in addition to the couch), cozy couches and rocking chairs, beautiful lamps. The wood stove in the living room was plenty to heat the house while we were there. The bed in the main bedroom was comfy, there was a soaring cathedral ceiling and lots of light in the room, it had a beautiful view out over the Sound and there was lots of closet space (the clever use of cabinetry makes tremendous use of the A-frame walls upstairs). There is a huge deck with a picnic table. The wood-fired hot tub was incredible, the water was hot and ready for use when we arrived in the afternoon (thanks to Grant, who thinks of everything), though we didn't use it until the next morning and the temperature was still perfect. The firepit just inside the gate provided great ambiance next to the little pool - I wished I had brought marshmallows and skewers for roasting. There is a little mountain slope behind the property that our dog loved exploring. Just bring your toiletries, your hiking shoes, and your favorite vacation foods (though there is a small grocery store with basic selections near the ferry dock). This home away from home is an incredible value and we hope to return soon.

We had a lovely stay at this Lummi Island cabin. We appreciated the beautiful views of Mt. Baker and the fabulous sunrises. Our dogs loved the the walks through the woods and hanging our on the beaches on the west side with views of Orcas Island and the San Juans. We discovered public beach access at the church. The cabin itself was cozy and rustic, just right for a weekend get away.

Perfect Romantic Getaway

September 22, 2012

My (new) wife and I visited Grant's hideaway as our honeymoon treat. Bear in mind, we had a simple wedding - a JP and witnesses, and wanted an uncomplicated getaway. We could easily have taken off to the 4 Seasons in Whistler or a Fairmont property via my employment, but wanted something more private and intimate. After viewing the photos on this site and speaking with Grant, I knew I had the right place and the right host. When he understood our occasion, he offered special extra touches, that were massively appreciated. When we arrived, Grant had the outdoor chiminea going, the hot tub, and the woodstove - very welcoming. He gave us a warm welcome, a quick orientation, and then made a friendly departure. So much kinder and more personal than anywhere else I have stayed. In the spirit of fully equipped cabins, all we had to bring were our food and beverages - everything else was there. The place has great sight-lines for privacy and views... a fantastic combination. We loved the warm wood heat, and the fun of stoking the fires, among many other charms. If you are expecting a 5-star hotel, remember that this is a privately owned and maintained property. There isn't a cleaning staff to whisk through between each guest - just the owner - so we made sure to leave the place cleaner than when we arrived, which we believe is implied in the contract of a well-maintained vacation rental at a reasonable price. It was such a good value that it only seemed fair. If you'll be offended by the odd cobweb or a bit of dust in a corner, save yourself the angst, then double (or triple) your budget. But if you'd like to enjoy a relaxing, trouble-free holiday in a clean, well-equipped yet rustic setting, you may just owe it to yourself to spend a few days here... We'll certainly be back!!!

Surrounded by Cool Forests and Warm Fires

July 7, 2012

My wife recently stayed an entire week at Grant's cabin with our two little girls (5 & 3) and we had a wonderful time. If we did nothing else, just being surrounded by one of the greenest forests have even seen- was great. We spent a week in absolutely no hurry at all. This was the perfect place to do so in midsummer (when back home it was 100 degrees plus!) Stoking fires on the patio, in the hot tub, and in the house... cooking fun meals on the grill and in the kitchen, etc. However, we also explored quite a bit of the area in that week. The girls loved playing at the church beach, the estates shoreline, the shore north of the ferry dock, the hike up to the top of Lummi Peak, and just watching the wildlife throughout the island. As it was our first time anywhere near the area, we also took day trips off-island along the cascades to check out the mountains a bit more closeup... and a trip down Chuckanut Drive to view the San Juans from that vantage point, as well as to have a meal of fresh shellfish at one of the restaurants near Taylor Shellfish Farms. Perhaps the best way to understand the experience would be to check out the photos posted via Instagram on my phone from the week at Flickr (account "nashworld"). I have hundreds of other pics from a professional camera setup that will be there in the next few weeks, but this set of 140 iPhone shapshots might give you a more visual review. Lastly, Grant was a fantastic host throughout. He met us at the cabin, gave us a tour of all of the details... and had fires on the patio and in the hot tub to greet us. Amazing atmosphere from the start. He even gave a quick courtesy phone call after a couple of days just to make sure everything was going well. This is an amazing area, a friendly host, and a property that truly integrates itself into its surroundings. We still have a lot of this planet to see, but when we get back to this area, we'll certainly cross our fingers that Grant's place isn't booked. Enjoy...

Cozy cabin nestled in the woods-very dog friendly!

July 7, 2012

My boyfriend and I recently stayed here with our dog for our 3 year anniversary and it was amazing! We couldn't have asked for a more beautiful house, inside and out. Grant and his dog Emma greeted us when we arrived and showed us the property and surrounding area which was really nice because you could get a feel for the area and get a crash course on how to work all the fireplaces! Grant has masterfully restored the house himself and each room has something unique about it, it's just amazing inside, plenty of room for about 5-7 people, or a family, or a perfect quiet get-away for 2. We brought our own food to BBQ(there's 2!) and I loved prepping food on the huge stainless steal kitchen counter that looks out into the bay. Inside was great for rainy days, but the beauty of this place is the outside. There isn't a bad view from the property and the big deck is great for relaxing in the sun and looking out at the mountains and ocean. The wood fired soaking tub was perfect for relaxing in the day or watching the stars at night. There's lots of places to walk around and go hiking, the dog loved it! But the best part is being able to shut yourself off from the outside world even though your so close. Once you shut the gates to the lower patio you really can't be seen by anyone and it feels like your own private oasis with a spectacular view! The only bummer was having to leave so soon. Grant was super nice and accommodating and we will definitely be returning here for a longer stay! I've already recommended this rental to lots of family and friends. It's not too far of a drive from Seattle, and only a short trip from Bellingham!

Loved the laid back ambience. Simple pleasures ie. wood fireplace & hot tub, claw foot bath, cozy down duvets. Setting was beautiful high on a wooded hillside with water & Bellingham views. Cozy, comfortable, woodsy retreat

December 24, 2011

A lovely place with lots of character and warmth. Short, charming ferry ride to get to the island. Grant was at the chalet to greet us and let us know how things work; his enthusiasm for the place is fantastic. He had lit all the fires, including the outdoor fireplace for us. The woodstove kept the place cozy-warm and we also fed the hot tub fire to keep it sweltering. The log bed in the master bedroom is lovely; nice water views from upstairs and down. There are some cool touches like the tin ceiling in the living room/dining room and clawfoot tub in the upstairs bathroom. Perfect romantic getaway spot. One wish: glass cups and wineglasses as there were only plastic, and a thermometer in the hot tub. We used the sightseeing sheet Grant provided to check out some spots on the island. There are some neat beaches (yes, even in the winter), one with sandstone, another with funky fishing shacks and paraphernalia. Note that the local cafe/pub, the Beach Store Cafe, is open only a few days per week, so if you're there for a short stay and want to check it out, find out the hours. Townspeople are friendly. . Overall - loved it!

We fell in love here, and are now getting married!

August 9, 2011

I'd like to share an email I recently wrote to Grant, the owner of Waterview Chalet in the Woods. Hello Grant, my name is Barbara Evans. Last year on Oct 15th, I rented your cabin with my (then) very new boyfriend. I admit that we fell deeply in love there, and had the most memorable weekend imaginable. We have now been together for almost a year, and are so in love that we will be married soon. We would first like to thank you, and let you know that a weekend of true romance and new love that started in your lovely home, has since developed into our dreams come true. We are so happy, and think and speak fondly of your home on Lummi often. The second thing we are wondering is if it is available to rent the first week in Oct this year, to share the anniversary of the day we met one year earlier. It would mean a lot to us to secure a reservation to spend our anniversary where we first fell in love. Please advise, and we will happily go about the reservation process. Thank you so very much, we appreciate everything, and can't wait to meet you again and thank you in person! Barbara and Miguel

Thanks Grant for sharing your romantic dream house with me. The Chalet in the Woods was a dream come true. Very nice and clean, better than some motels I have stayed at before. I was so amazed of the time you spent putting this Chalet in the Woods together, that pair of driftwood rockers by the fire was very very nice. The snow topped fir trees were worth picture taking. Forgot to mention that HOT TUB, enjoyed it even when it was cold outside and the snow falling. Never had such a great time in my life. Very relaxing, peaceful, and a dream on a island come true. July 27, 2009

Nestled into this island getaway you will find deer walking nearby. Breathtaking sunrises that highlight Mt. Baker. Swimming lake nearby. Unmatched island charm. The amenities, provided supplies, and warm hospitality make it a must do holiday. Thanks, Grant.

Lummi Island

June 27, 2009

My husband and I spent 4 nights at the Chalet and had one of the most relaxing vacations ever. What a beautiful spot to watch the water from. Enjoyed the hot tub, both decks, the outdoor fireplace, and to my delight there is also a claw foot tub in the second floor bath! Grant the owner is very accomadating and what a gem of a home for the price. We will definitely be back!

Opportunity to Relax in a Rustic Setting

May 31, 2009

We were first attracted to this vacation listing as we have several (right now six Chihuahua's) and the Waterview Chalet in the Woods is listed as pet friendly. Grant, the owner is extremely co-operative. We found everything as listed. This chalet is not modern. It is rustic, but in my opinion, that bring a great appeal. It was our first opportunity to holiday with our Chi's and that we could do in a very relaxed and wonderful environment. Scenery is magnificent. Jeff

Perfect Retreat

April 28, 2009

This beautifully conceived, constructed and finished all wood chalet is a place for experiencing peace. It is a perfect retreat site with quiet, bountiful views of beauty for meditation yet with all the amenities that allow a variety of lifestyles to be fully expressed in comfort. The fully equipped kitchen and all the overall details of this more-than-any-rental pleasure is a fine bargain and a meaningful investment in thoughtful leisure. There's even excellent high speed wireless internet for emergencies and fine cell phone reception. This pet friendly perfection was also enjoyed as much by our pampered pets as by us!

The Perfect Escape

April 14, 2009

I needed a place to escape NYC and this is the perfect place. The house is beautiful and was everything I needed it to be. The view is fantastic and the hot tub was great plus Grant was excellent to work with.

Very relaxing!

April 5, 2009

This home is well kept, and very relaxing and cozy. We spent three quiet days -- the views from all the windows are wonderful, whether it's sunny or snowy. The island is quiet but lovely, with lots of deer, bird varieties and very nice people. Thanks for a great stay!

Terrific place

December 3, 2008

My husband and I enjoyed our seclusion and privacy...already planning to come back in January. This cabin provided us everything that we hoped for; plenty of rooms, nice big kitchen, bathrooms and a firewood hot tub etc...Thank you so much Grant, we are looking forward next month.

The cabin is beautiful, with charming attention to detail. Perfect if you're looking for a secluded, comfortable weekend to sit in front of the fire and relax in the woods.Definitely keeping this place in mind for the next weekend trip.

Quiet and beautiful

October 6, 2008

My husband and I had a four day retreat here and loved the seclusion, the beautiful view of Mt. Baker and the cozy cottage. I spent most of the time snuggled on the day bed by the wood stove. We enjoyed the wood heated hot tub, but if you want instant gratification, it's probably not for you. For us it was an adventure. I wrote a more detailed review on my blog. You can email me if you want the link.

Picture Perfect

July 28, 2008

We spent 3 relaxing weeks here and loved it. The view of the water and Mt. Baker from the deck accompanied by the sound of the fountain can't be beat. On warmer days, my 10 year old and I enjoyed swimming in the lake at the top of the hill. It gave her a great chance to meet and play with other kids. Lots of nooks, crannies, and warmth here. Although there is a lovely fenced area for dogs, our 8 lb. Doggie could find ways under the fence when he set his mind to it.
