Description of the Lummi Island vacation home rental
A spectacular Cape Cod style home overlooking the native wildlife and glory of the San Juan Islands.

The beautifully landscaped grounds and numerous trails deliver majestic views of Mt. Baker and Bellingham Bay.

A generous great room on the main floor opens up with a double set of fir french doors to tiered lawns and gardens beyond.
Area Information
Lummi Island is unique in its close proximity to the mainland (BELLINGHAM) and the fact that it is served by its own vehicle ferry. The VEHICLE FERRY makes the 10 MINUTE CROSSING at least one an hour from 6 am to midnight each and every day.

You will be able to enjoy the treasures of island life, as well as mainland exploration. Day trips to the cities of Vancouver, BC Canada or Seattle, WA are perfectly within reason, as is hiking Mt. Baker, whale watching and visiting some of the other San Juan Islands.

Relaxing stay on Lummi

We had a lovely laid back stay at this property on Lummi. The house was beautiful and very well stocked with cooking gear, oils and vinegars and spices, and even had coffee and filters! There were more than enough towels including towels for the dogs. Hot tub is very nice, and we loved the firepit. Even with our dogs, the deer were insistent on being fed. The only reason it's not a 5 star is that the property isn't really water/beach accessible as advertised. There is a "beach" trail that is very steep and definitely wasn't doable to get our kayak down there. If that isn't a big deal, you'll be very happy there!

Gudrun Gutsche

Owner's reply:

Thank you again for your kind words, Mindy, and for sharing your impressions of the trail to the beach. We experienced a fair bank slide last Spring, and while getting down by foot was certainly doable, you may recall that we didn't know how well you would do with Kayaks.

Good news this year, however, as we spent a great deal of energy reworking the trail, and rebuilding the stairs at the beach. Guests are very happy and we expect you would be too!

Perfect retreat on Lummi Island

We had a wonderful peaceful time at this well equiped beautiful waterfront home. I would recommend shopping at Haggen's Market in Bellingham or other similar store prior to your trip to the island. There is a small store on the island and a weekend market that is seasonal. It's a great place for a couple, family, or small group. Reservations at the Wiilows Inn should be made well in advance since it is quite popular. Good Luck!!!!

Wonderful weekend rendezvous (family style)

Lummi Island is the perfect mid-point for a weekend get together for 3 families (1 Canadian & 2 American). The vacation home rental had plenty of room for 5 adults and 3 kids. It's a lovely walk to the beach below, and we took advantage of the great weather by doing the 7-mile loop around the island. A definite highlight of our trip was dinner at the Willows Inn featuring their new world-class chef, Blaine Wetzel.

It's been two years since we last visited. We didn't know if we could ever mach the wonderful experience we had before, but your beautiful home and property (and the gorgeous weather) helped make this a very special Mothers' day weekend! The deer visited daily and that was a real treat. We explored the beach with our dogs, enjoyed the hot tub each night, read out in the sun and played card games around the kitchen table. The bonus is our teenagers are as happy here as we are. Thank you for sharing your home, we look forward visiting again! Blessings,

The allure of this charming home is evident the moment you drive up to it. I had to take a minute to drink in the view before even getting out of the car. I can honestly say that this is the first time I rented a vacation home where I truly didn't have to bring the usual extras. I even felt comfortable using the spices and olive oils as they were fresh and plentiful. The attention to detail was impeccable! The owners of this home truly take care of their guests. Although our family's objective was to "disconnect to reconnect", this home is wired for everything you may need. The little store down the road doesn't have much, but does have what you need most of the time and its employees were very nice island folk! And that goes the same for the two cafe's on the island too. Delicious and Friendly. Should you happen to get island fever while you are there, the easy peasy ferry system makes it a nice quick trip to buzz over to the mainland to find more things to do. I however, was perfectly content cozied up by the fire with my book, a glass of wine or cup of tea, and those distracting views that are absolutely stunning, especially in the early morning hours! Be warned that you will have chores when you stay here however, as it will be your duty to feed the local deer who pretty much come to the sliding glass doors to say that they are ready for their dinner, but don't worry, the owners have thought of that too, and have special deer food provided for you to put in their own food bowls located in the yard. :) This is no doubt that I will return with my family to this home for future escapes. We have nothing but love for the Lummi way of life. Thank you so much for allowing my family much needed decompression time and the chance to exhale for a little while! This trip left a warm wonderful impression for all of us. Thank you!

My best friend and I came to Beachwood with my dog to spend a couple days, and each one of us had an incredible time. The property is beautiful, with nice landscaping. Lots of places to explore, and an easy walk down to the beach. The home is cozy and comfortable. One of the best treats of our visit was the daily visits from the deer. We highly recommend this lovely and easy to get to vacation site.

We had an amazing time here. There was such a breath taking view! We loved feeding the deers and the hot tub! The sunset Beach here is so beautiful. Rock (the dog) loved swimming there! The bikes were so much fun to ride. My Dad and I attempting to ride the two person bike, was an adventure. Lastly the campfire was amazing. Roasting marsh-mellows and hot dogs was great! The house is beautiful and we had a great family time doing games and puzzles!

OMG! Paradise!!! We had a wonderful time here at Beachwood on Lummi Island. Thank you to Gudrun & Wayne for their excellent care and management of this amazing "retreat from city life." We were in awe of how many deer come to the gardens. They are beautiful creatures, and a doe w/ two fawns, too. Bald eagles, great blue heron, a mourning dove, nuthatches, towhees and pine siskins galore. Oh, and the stellar jays and seagulls! Bird watching was superb! Thank you again - we look forward to our next visit!

Beyond our expectations. Everything was so perfect. Four bucks fed nearby while does and fawns lingered on the lawn. Mt Baker was visible every day and the beds were entirely comfortable. We saw the Quickdraw String Band at the cookoff on Saturday. I wish we could have stayed longer. Excellent setting for a relaxing vacation.

So relaxed I think it's August instead of July. Thank you for a wonderful week. The house is superb - so comfortable and well appointed and the view is spectacular. We all had an absolutely wonderful vacation, thank you so much for making your lovely home available. My boys are already begging to come back! We had a great time sitting around the fire at night and watching the wild (and not so wild!) life around the yard and down at the beach. Rob and I got in miles and miles of riding our tandem around Lummi and the Bellingham area. Now its back to Iowa and corn and wind and humidity!

June 2013

We loved it. The house is so beautiful and cozy. We loved spending evenings outside around the fire pit and watching the deer. It was fun biking around the island. One day we went Kayaking with Moon Dance. Charmin was an excellent guide. We left from Larrabee State Park. the day started out overcast and windy but by lunch time it was sunny and beautiful. We stopped at Barleans in Bellingham several times to get seafood for dinner. The only we didn't like was the Willows. It was extremely expensive for little tastings! The food was good but not worth $425 for two! We are leaving today and really wish we had a couple more days to enjoy the beautiful place! Thanks so much!

1st Day: it is currently 5:47 pm and we arrived at approximately 5:00. As soon as we got here, I jumped in the tub with my parents. It was lovely!

2nd Day: Just enjoyed a magnificent day. Woke up early in search of dear; But, unfortunately we had no luck. Instead, I enjoyed the bikes and the swing. I walked all the paths (a definite must) and then down to the beach. We toured the island in our car. After poor weather arrived we laughed while playing canasta and enjoying treats. Thank you this really is luxurious!

Next Day: Thank you! We had a lovely time the view was amazing, and your house welcoming.

Thank you!

(Friday) Immediately, this house brings a calm to a stressful life and back memories of wonderful times. Surrounded by loved ones, it is times like these that truly allow you to appreciate the best moments in life.

(Saturday) Today is my birthday! What I thought was going to be low key, non-eventful birthday has turned into a soul warming enriching experience. We rode the bicycles to the Farmer's Market. Although we hoped for more vendors, we found exactly what we needed. We walked to the water, laid in the sun, read novels, played cards and had a wonderful day. I feel spoiled to witness such beauty on my birthday. More importantly, I am learning to calm down, let go and not seat the small stuff... comes with wisdom.

(Sunday) Today is my mother's birthday. Another beautiful day although a little overcast. This has been a truly beautiful weekend filled with love, laughter and peace. A much needed break from the stresses of life.

We leave the Beachwood tomorrow. Thank you for a lovely stay!

This was a wonderful place to have our family together. We loved the hot tub, the excellent furnishings, the swing on the edge of the property, the beach, and walks to the store and restaurant. We had a wonderfully clear weather week where we saw Mount Baker every day. We had a romantic dinner at the Willows and several at the Oyster Bar. The fire-pit was great and the property is beautifully landscaped. A most relaxing 12 days here. We will be back!

What a delight taking our first step on to the property. The Garden of Eden, so welcoming and so beautiful. We loved watching the wind dance with the flowers and trees.

The house is so complete with beauty and charm! The flower arrangement was a welcome touch. The beds were so inviting.

We were eating dinner outside gazing on the beauty of Mt. Baker when a buck came up the stairs of the garden. What a surprise!

This place brought Psalm 23 to mind. What a blessing to stay in your home.

Many thanks,

July 2012

We are a family of five from Houston Texas. This has been a very special Family vacation for us. We logged in many hours researching where we would go this year and it most definitely paid off! We had some unexpected "challenges" this week but we got thru them, as a family in this beautiful paradise. Every morning and night the deer came to visit (we fed them very well!). We had campfires every evening, we explored, we played games (we even left one called Apple to Apples for Beachwood visitors to enjoy). Two fishing trips were canceled but we were able to go white water rafting in Gold Bar, we rode bikes, we drove to Whatcom Falls, drove to Deception Pass Park (saw Eagles), had the Best breakfast in Bellingham at Mount Bakery (Benedict and Crepes!), drove Chuckanut scenic route, Catamaran sunset ride... Fireworks every night??!! Last night lightening "storm" was spectacular! As I write this journal four of our deer Friends are enjoying breakfast!!!!

We feel truly blessed to have had this time in this special place. We created memories that will last a lifetime!

May 2012

We spent two weeks here, so we got very comfortable with Lummi Island and the Beachhouse. The weather has been typical late spring--50's and 60's with some sun breaks. We visited family and friends in Bellingham and Anacortes. We hiked the 3.4 mile ridge hike up to the overlook (the trail-head is just down the street). The view of the San Juans is stunning--worth the 20% grade. We biked around the 7-mile loop twice--saw bald eagles, seals, many large barges, the small cemetery. It's pretty easy to get back and forth on the ferry (once we adjusted our thinking), but the cost mounts up. We spent a day in Vancouver, stopped in Fairhaven, etc. From the house, we saw a zillion deer, mountain pigeons, etc. (thank goodness for the bird book). This was a lovely peaceful time.

Was So Great, We Stayed An Extra Night!

Feb 2012

Had a terrific time to celebrate my best friend's 40th birthday! I have a high stress job, and every now and then I feel the need to get away, so this was a perfect thing for all of us. It was very comfortable for me and my friend's family. We appreciated how well stocked the kitchen was compared to other places we've been. The kids enjoyed the trucks to play with outside and we had a couple evenings around the fire outside while we drank tea. Even though it was rainy much of the time we were there, getting away for a few days was a great way to relax. We baked cookies, a cake, and had some gourmet meals while we were there. The scenary was great and the grounds were well taken care of. What was the icing on the cake was the opportunity to hand feed a herd (yes and entire herd) of deer!! It was such a magical moment that I will probably never forget it. My only recommendation is to be careful with the banisters. We had to warn the kids that they weren't very secure. My friend and I are thinking about coming back for a girlfriend retreat with a few others sometime. Communication with the owner was fantastic and much appreciated. In fact, she was extremely kind when my friend forgot her soup pot and it magically appeared on her doorstep one day. That spoke volumes to us and was a huge blessing. We'll definitely call on her again in the future for another reservation.

What a wonderful stay. Thank you for all the help in making our honeymoon, vow renewal so very special. The house was amazing as were the grounds! My husband the firefighter enjoyed the many chances to have a fire in the fireplace and firepits! Our wedding was so beautiful and there were so many places for great pictures. We had a wonderful Spring break. Relaxing and restful. Enjoyed hiking Baker Preserve and relaxing in the hot tub afterward.

The house and gardens very beautifully and tastefully decorated. We wanted somewhere with a lovely view and we had wonderful views from every room! Everything was excellent!

Julie, Richland, WA

The house was beautiful. I loved the deer and it was nice to see them on my first day here! The rooms were exquisite and the chairs were really comfy too.

Lovely, peaceful and oh, so picturesque. We were delighted by the view in all weather; the daily bald eagle fly-bys, deer in the evening and such understated plantings in the terraces. Very nicely done. We will be back, I'm sure

What a beautiful home you have! Thank you for sharing it with us. The deer were a treat to have around. We look forward to seeing them every day. It is so quiet and peaceful and . The only complaint is that it was hot here. We are from Sacramento and we were trying to escape the heat.

This place is truly the reflection of Gudrun and Wayne's love of nature and interior design. Everywhere I looked there was something beautiful to discover. Thank you both for sharing!

We were here during record high temperatures in the area. There was always a cool spot on the yard or house. What a treat to be here during berry season.

It was great. I don't know where to start. I guess I'll start with the deer. I loved them. I gave them all names. The nicest deer was Prince. The rest are King, Ryan, Phillip, Andrew, Juliet and Jane. thides were great. We saw lots of starfish, small and big wing crabs. The hot tub was so cool!! The beds were so comfy and soft. The deers like birdseed and apples from the tree, so don't use it all in one day. There is a swing in the commons. face toward the ocean not the other way. I loved making smores.

Thank you so much for sharing your gorgeous home with us! It was a refreshing break from everyday life that my family and I needed desperately. When we first arrived, we ran around the house and gardens squeeling with delight as we discovered the beautiful views and the trails and nooks and crannies of the grounds. I had never been to the San Juan Islands before this vacation and I love it! I know that as soon as we leave I'll be itching to come back. I had never seen a bald Eagle before or fed Deer and I know that these previously untried experiences will stay with me for the rest of my life. The deer were so sweet and let us pet them. I had no idea their antlers were so soft! We roamed the beach at low tide and my little brother and I saw tons of starfish and crabs.

Also, this past week that we were here, I turned 18! I can't think of a better place to spend my 18th birthday. The Beachwood has just been absolutely awesome and we can't wait to come back!!

What an amazing place to stay! We made a fire and played guitar around it, and it was so much fun! We also biked around the island each day. It's simply beautiful here. Each day here there seemed to be a new group of wildlife greeting us; including deer, raccoons, bunnies, birds and the list could go on.

Thank you so much for such an amazing experience!

A Year of Hope and Change

Thank you Beachwood for providing us with warmth, inspiration, creativity and love. The daily viewing of Mt. Baker across the water was enjoyable.

We enjoyed an abundance of home cooked meas. The deer (Marvin and Bob) were friendly and cute. We are very thankful for all of Master Wayne's help with keeping our fire burning and our bodies warm.

A magical getaway from the hectic pace of schedule and routine in the city. The grand crackling fire served as the perfect cozy backdrop for a good book and glass of wine. Sunshine, rain, mist, wind--all the weather elements only added to the refueling "moment" we had here.

Thank you for prividing the space for coming back to balance and some great laughs!

Mt. Baker rising through mist and broken cloud on a sunny Saturday morning. A bald Eagle skimming the glassy surface of a calm sea. The incense of fir and moss floating on the breeze. And silence all around. A perfect interlude. Thanks for sharing this world and your comfortable home.

What a beautiful Home! The garden of flowers was so inviting. The view was so perfect that it almost didn't seem real. The restaurants on Lummi were superb! Our explorations led us to Grouse Mountain (Vancouver), kayaking with Elakah, Rafting on the Nooksack River and Sailing from Bellingham Harbor. It is a paradise in your part of this awesome world. We are already planning for our next trip to the Great Pacific Northwest.
Thank you for everything.

4) Went to Mt. Baker and Artist's Point. The snow was amazing!
5) Drove to Blaine and rode horses, then to Semiahmoo to scope out the resort.
6) Back up to Semiahmoo for a spa day for me and Mom, Noah and Lizzie played on the beach.
7) River rafting on the Skagit, That was SO much fun! Cold, but fun.
8) Sunset Kayaking trip at Larrabee State Park. Wonderful!
9) Back to Seattle, then Phoenix, then Scottsdale!

Thanks for your hospitality--the house is so well appointed and ready for use. We thoroughly enjoyed our 4 days and did not want to leave! What a surprise when we pulled up to the yard and found the view of Mt. Baker--totally unexpected. The kids loved making their way down the trails to the beach while we enjoyed our drinks by the fire. The weather was perfect and we finally got the hang of timing our trips off Island to catch the ferry at the right time.

Thanks again for a memorable time--we hope to return one day!
