Mancos is located in southwest Colorado, between Durango and Cortez on US 160. It is five miles east of the entrance to Mesa Verde National Park, and about 40 miles northeast of the Four Corners Monument. Durango is 35 miles to the east. San Juan National Forest is 10 miles to the north. Two airports are within an hours drive, as well as two hospitals.

The Town sits at 7,000 feet above sea level. The Mancos Valley is surrounded by the La Plata Mountains on one side, and the spectacular cliffs of Mesa Verde on the other. A few miles north is Jackson Gulch Resevoir (fishing), Mancos State Park (mountain biking), and Chicken Creek Cross-country Ski Area and snowshoeing. Dolores, 20 miles northwest offers excellent mountain biking and McPhee Resevoir for fishing and boating.

Due to its proximity to a variety of outdoor attractions, Mancos is a destination for tourists, as well as people just looking to “get away from it all.” Cool summers, snowy winters, Mancos receives about 300 days of sunshine per year. Fishing, hiking, camping, bicycling,boating and horse-back riding are all part of the norm. Further west is Cortez and the Canyons of the Ancients National Monument.

The 2000 Census revealed 1,119 residents in the Town, and about 3000 residents in the Mancos Valley.
