The NYC police dept 20th precinct is 2 blocks away on 82nd street and Columbus Avenue to provide police security for the neighborhood.
Parking
You can park free on the street. There are 4 or 5 garages nearby at a cost of $35.00 for 24 hours. You can usually find street space parking by cruising around for 5 or 10 minutes. You can park all day on Sat and Sunday
Interesting places abound nearby
Dreamy and evasive Cafe Alou on 83rd between Columbus and Broadway is where Tom Hanks dated Meg Ryan in You Got Mail. The pastry is as luscious and decadent as the French decoration. A must visit. Then around the corner you have the best Hazelnut coffee in town. The place is called Drip and do pay attention to the stationary computers and myriad of folders. It is one of the most ingenious dating concepts in a coffee shop.
Then later at night you have Lava Lounge that has an exceptional red lounge room with huge pillows and a basement lava room. It changed names recently but ask around on 83-84th Street on Columbus and you will be directed in the right direction. In addition, just walking down Columbus you must take advantage of the exquisite Snapper presented at Calle Ocho between 82nd and 83rd Street on Columbus. It was spectacular and is a must treat. The oyster lovers will be pleasantly served on Columbus between 78th-79th Street at Ocean Grill with your own private fire place, find it and for a final enjoyment of privacy, find Cafe Artistes at 1 w. 67th. These are the secrets of the Upper West Side. Indulge this and don 't forget that Lincoln Center and the Shakespeare in the Park have free performances all summer long, every summer. Lincoln Center has live music bands outdoors on Lincoln Plaza for free for 4-6 hours each Saturday night during the summer' All from Salsa, Jazz, and Classical to anything that makes you move.
Enjoy the following special events: February- Presidents week, Valentines Day; March-St. Patrick’s Day parade; April-Easter Parade Fifth Avenue; May-NYC bicycle race, Memorial Day weekend; June-start of summer; July 4 celebration; August- U.S. Open tennis; September-Labor day weekend. Reviews for this vacation apartment rental in Manhattan, New York

Amazing location for a family stay
May 31, 2009
Beautiful bathroom (amazing in New York, really!), cozy and easy space to stay in - we took advantage of the jacuzzi, the big TV and DVD player, and the amazing location - around the corner from Sarabeth's for great breakfasts, a block from Museum of Natural History, two from Central Park, very short walk to A,C, and 1 Subway lines and the ever-available crosstown bus to the 4,5,6 lines and everything attached to those. Near Zabars, Children's Museum, Cafe Lalo...not far from Lincoln Center and easy to get to Broadway. Restaurants abound in this area(we loved that we could get Peruvian-chinese and gluten-free Southern-Italian food delivered on the same night). Very safe and reasonably quiet neighborhood. Great guide of local options in apartment. Friendly and easy hosts, too, with prompt, clear responses to questions. We would consider staying again.

Spring in the Upper Westside
April 25, 2009
This was our 4th trip to New York in 4 years - we always stay in the Upper Westside which we love as you really feel you're in a residential but vibrant neighbourhood with great places to eat in the evening (or any time of day). We chose the apartment for its location and chose well! The apartment has good facilities for self catering although we always went out to eat. It was very quiet, especially for sleeping, and we enjoyed the fact we were in a real residential block where New Yorkers were coming and going too. If being picky, the shower would benefit from a proper showerhead as it's like standing under a tap(!) and the bedroom would benefit from bedside lamps. We liked the fact we could open the bathroom window to air the apartment as the hot pipes in the rooms made it very warm at times. That said, it was very clean and comfortable and we had a great time in NYC as always.

We gave up on hotels a while back, and we have stayed in many vacation rentals. The things we wanted in a New York rental were exactly the things we found in this 80th street rental: an excellent location, a homey feel, the ability to save money on food by eating in (especially with Zabar's so close by), the comfort, and the free internet. I have already recommended this particular rental to my friends.

Professional and convenient
September 23, 2008
This was the first time I've rented an apartment during a stay in NYC and it was terrific. This neighborhood is incredible and the best in NYC. It is convenient to the trains, the sites and the park. This owner and her staff are very professional with clear communication and follow through. We met the rep. at the apartment at the time agreed upon and were given a short orientation and exchanged the balance of the rental. Everything was exactly as advertised. The apartment is small and not at all posh, but convenient and has everything you need right down to the Splenda packets and great water pressure.

True to its expectation
September 23, 2008
Every good thing has been said in he other reviews.I just could add that coming from France and used to rent in Europe, I was agreably surprised to find already disposable in the apartment the first and indispensable little things as shower gel, shampoo, detergents, toilet papers, all small things that would have had to be bought in arriving in a rented place in Europe. Our big daughter slept in the sofa bed and it was perfectly ok for three people. The location is great. The only detail that was a little bit annoying was the darkness of the apartment, as we had to draw the curtain to know what was the weather. Anyhow, highly recomemndable place.

As advertised and previously reviewed
August 26, 2008
The previous reviewers sum it up well. I was also pleased to benefit from a last minute discount (offered on the "Last Minute Deals" page of this site), and with the professional nature of the booking (some of the other listings I inquired about were distinctly amateur in their responses). Note the apartment may be a little small for 4 people - but it's "do-able" if you are looking for ways to save. Would love to come back again sometime.

This apartment is in an awesome location, 2 blocks from Central Park and surrounded by some fantastic restaurants and great pubs that stay open till the wee hours. Zabar's deli is 2 blocks away, easy subway access, etc. Apt is well furnished with coffee pot, ironing board, hair dryer, cable tv. If you are looking for an authentic NYC experience I would highly recommend it. We'll be back!

Excellent Location!!!
June 6, 2008
Our family stayed here over Memorial Day weekend. The location was fantastic with a parking garage and subway station nearby... a short walk to Central Park, Natural History Museum and many stores and restaurants. The apartment was very clean, with fresh paint, new carpet and a remodeled bathroom. The kitchen was well stocked with dishes, pots and pans, toaster, etc. There were plenty of towels and bathroom supplies. Elaine and Tom were most professional and helpful in planning our trip. We would definitely recommend this accomodation to anyone.

Excellent stay
January 2, 2008
My husband and I recently stayed in the studio apartment and we had an excellent experience. The apartment is nicely appointed, very clean, and is in a great neighborhood. As a former New Yorker, I can honestly say that one would be hard pressed to find a better deal in the city or a better location. Elaine and her colleagues were so easy to work with and I would highly recommend staying in one of their apartments.
