Area Description
The apartment is located on a sunny corner, right next to St. Nicholas Park and City College, in a beautiful, safe, friendly and diverse historic district, smack in the middle of two of the most captivating residential enclaves of upper Manhattan: Strivers Rows and Sugar hill with their tree lined streets, wide avenues and beautifully kept century old architecture
Subways and busses are a short block from here. The express A & D trains will have you in mid-town in 15 to 20 minutes.
The M3 Bus will take you down Fifth Avenue, "Museum Mile", along Central Park all the way to The Village.
As Langston Hughes put it: "There is so much to see in Harlem." Visit Hamilton Grange, the country estate of Alexander Hamilton; Riverbank State Park, with its wonderful carousel and a spectacular view of the George Washington Bridge; the beautiful architecture of City College (CUNY); the lovely row houses of Hamilton Heights (often called Sugar Hill) that have been home to Count Basie, US Chief Justice Thurgood Marshall and boxing great Sugar Ray Robinson; and Strivers' Row (a reference to the upward mobility of the doctors, lawyers and other middle-class professionals who purchased homes here) on 138th and 139th streets.
Any day is a good one to come uptown, but Sundays are, for many, the best time to hear gospel singing at churches like the Gothic-style Abyssinian Baptist (where the charismatic Adam Clayton Powell once preached), Visitors of all races and creeds are given a warm welcome (please remember to dress appropriately for church).
For a taste of Southern hospitality and stomach-and-spirit satisfying soul food at a restaurant such as Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, Sylvia's, Amy Ruth's or Bayou. Hopping nightspots include the Lenox Lounge, St. Nick's Pub for great Jazz, the world famous Appolo Theatre. For great music, dance theatre, Aaron Davis Hall and the Gate House.
Museums nearby include The Museum of Natural History and the Rose Planetariun, The Studio Museum of Harlem, The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. The fantastic Bronx Zoo, a must if traveling with children, is just 15 minutes away
