Description of the Manhattan vacation b&b rental
Tucked away on a beautiful tree-lined street, 1871 House is a unique place to stay in Manhattan. The inn (which would otherwise be considered a bed and breakfast however offers no morning meal) is located in a classic brownstone on east 62nd Street, between Park & Lexington Avenues. The pretty shuttered townhouse is in a nicely quiet location close to Central Park.
Seven spacious rooms offer high ceilings, fireplaces, four-poster beds covered by quilts, marble-topped dressers and lace-curtained windows. Fireplace mantles, moldings around windows and high ceilings have been carefully preserved. All give the place an elegant B&B feel, as do the antiques scattered throughout. Rooms are modernly enough appointed that you won't feel stuck in the 19th century. Each room is quite large, cozy and country furnished.
The beautiful brownstone building has been extensively renovated over the past ten years. Close to an upscale shopping zone, the quiet, tree-lined street makes you forget you’re in the heart of the city.
Many fine restaurants are nearby; Bloomingdale's, Barney's New York and the temptations of Madison Avenue are a short walk away.
If you are traveling in mild weather, reserve the Garden Room which has access to a lovely terrace garden complete with an elegant teak bench, teak lounge chairs & table. A large canvas umbrella creates an ideal spot for tea on the balcony surrounded by containers filled with pansies, lavender, Roses, Hydrangeas, Ivy, and many more (in summer months). Some rooms have kitchenettes, but the hotel is surrounded by many eateries.
Rates are based on the particular room. Each unit is priced individually. 1871 House is not available to be rented in its entirety.
1871 House was recently ranked the #1 B&B in New York by U.S.A. Today and the #6 B&B in the USA for business travelers.
An Excerpt from "New York's 100 Best Little Hotels:"
"Imagine New England Country Charm just steps from Park Avenue! This delightfully warm and welcoming bed and breakfast is located in a classic five-story brownstone on one of New York’s loveliest, tree-lined blocks. Proprietress Lia Raum and her husband, Warren, have furnished this wonderfully special place with treasures gleaned from Connecticut antiques stores and flea markets.
The result is a feeling of home and hearth, as you would dream it to be. More country inn than urban B&B, here personal attention, good taste, and loving care are evident in every detail. Hand-stitched quilts, hooked rugs, sleigh beds, and sporting prints and paintings abound. Most bedrooms feature original mouldings and working fireplaces. Windows look out on either the leafy, quiet street or the tree-shaded back garden. If you can, book the romantic Cottage room, with its sun-drenched second-floor terrace. This book was written expressly to unearth gems like 1871 House a lovely country hideaway in one of New York’s most elegant neighborhoods."
1871 House was named Country Living Magazine's Inn of the month (September 2004) and has had many favorable reviews including: Conde Nast Traveler (Nov 2008); National Geographic (June 2007), MRS Magazine (Japanese), DK New York E guide (2005), "New York’s 100 best little hotels,” “The Unofficial Guide to Bed and breakfasts and Country Inns in the Mid-Atlantic 1st edition and many others around the world (Frommer).
