Area Description

The quaint, outdoorsy town of Manzanita is both a family’s delight and an active persons dream. The town is located 13 miles South of Cannon Beach and 30 miles North of Tillamook. The town and beach is bordered on the North by Neakhanie Mtn (which is a wonderful hike) and to the South by Nehalem Bay State Park (which has a multitude of activities).

While strolling the beach one can often see surfers, boogie boarders, windsurfers and kite boarders testing their skills. Families activities include kite flying, sand castle building, bicycling, beach combing, dog walking, driftwood fort building, and bonfires. The beach is 7 miles long and flat, and easily accessible. Our home is 1.5 blocks to the beach. Manzanita can be warm and sunny while other towns in the summer can be foggy.

The quaint little town of Manzanita offers shopping, art galleries, wine tasting and some nice restaurants, which is all with in close walking distance of our house. Other activities include a wonderful downtown park with tennis courts, a basketball hoop, and playground for small kids. Manzanita is one of the few coastal towns that has a golf course. Manzanita Golf Course is a nice little 9 hole track that winds through the woods and houses and is very well maintained and reasonably priced.

For the more active there are a number of hikes located nearby including Neakhanie Mtn. The Neakhanie Mtn trail starts about a mile North of town and is a relatively short (3 miles) but consistently uphill hike (900 feat of elevation gain) that affords one of the most breathtaking and spectacular views along the Oregon Coast. On a clear day if you’re adventurous and need to burn some energy this is a “can’t miss” and you will not be disappointed. Another mile North of Manzanita is Oswald West State Park, which is a beautiful, short hike down to the beach through old growth forests. This beach is a favorite among surfers and locals.

We find that family bike riding in Manzanita is ideal as the town is off the main highway (101) and does not get a lot of traffic that many of the Oregon Coasts towns do. Biking to the Southern end of town allows a family to take advantage of the bike trails within Nehalem Bay State Park where deer and elk can often be spotted. The trails lead over to the bay side of the park where there is a boat launch, some great sand dunes for the kids to hike up and run down, and a great stroll along along the bay side where interesting enormous driftwood and snags can be seen and climbed on by kids. The majority of the biking can be done on flat terrain with little traffic. Bikes can be rented in town for use on the beach.

Crabbing can be found by either renting a boat from the marinas on inlet side of the bay or by simply renting crabpots and going right off the docks. If you’re luck isn’t great at crabbing you can purchase crab directly from marina. It’s a great activity for kids and a nice diversion. Additionally clamming is done right in the park as well, but you need a liscense. Be sure to check the tide tables and check with the locals regarding whether it’s a good time to crab or shellfish.
