New Year's Vacation - 2014-15
January 15, 2015
We enjoyed a memorable stay at Cannon Point Fortress the week surrounding the New Year's Holiday of 2014/15. Our party consisted of 12 people (2 families and a set of grandparents with ages ranging from 18 to 75) and there was plenty of space for all. The house was "as advertised" on the vacation rental sites that I reviewed prior to rental. The owner, Patty Ripley, was very friendly and helpful and provided suggestions for local dining, nightlife, and daytime activities. She was on-site (in a private owner's quarters) throughout our stay due to ongoing renovations at her own home - but other than greeting us when we arrived and offering farewell when we left we never knew she was there.
Cannon Point Fortress had all the necessary amenities that our group was looking for and was comfortably appointed. If you or your group are the type of people who settle for no less than stainless steel appliances, granite counter-tops, Italian marble, and high thread-count bedding - Cannon Point Fortress may not be suitable for your needs. If you wish to spend a week (or more) in a quiet, secluded setting that offers impeccable outdoor areas to enjoy and relax in, 24/7 water views from virtually all areas, kayaks, heated pool and spa, private decks for relaxing and sun, and a premium location in Marathon from which you can access and enjoy all parts of the Keys - then this is the place for you. We spent our days by the pool and in the incredibly landscaped yard, enjoyed the local wildlife (fishing, birds, Iguanas), watched boats motor and sail by, kayaked the area, enjoyed walking the neighborhood, and enjoyed an hour-long visit by a manatee on the last day of our stay. Our evenings were spent in the main dining/living area or in the man-cave watching TV and playing table games - particularly enjoyed watching our beloved Ohio State Buckeyes beat the Alabama Crimson Tide in the National Semifinal - OH-IO!!
Like most rental homes in which we have stayed over the years, Cannon Point had its quirks - operating TV's and figuring out light switches took some time and we never did figure out how to make the patio lights by the pool/spa remain on in the evening and house was a little short on paper products, soaps, etc. (rectified by a quick trip to the store). Those quirks were heavily out-weighed by sun, ocean breezes, 80 degree days, and warm, quite nights. If we return to the Keys in the future, Cannon Point will be our first choice for a family rental!!
