Area Info
Matanzas City

Matanzas is the capital of the Cuban province of Matanzas. It is famed for its poets, culture, and Afro-Cuban folklore.

It is located on the northern shore of the island of Cuba, on the Bay of Matanzas (Spanish Bahia de Matanzas), 90 kilometres (56 mi) east of the capital Havana and 32 kilometres (20 mi) west of the resort town of Varadero.

Matanzas is called the “City of Bridges,” of which there are seventeen crossing the three rivers that traverse the city (Rio Yumuri, San Juan, and Canimar). For this reason it was referred to as the “Venice of Cuba.” It was also called “La Atenas de Cuba” (“The Athens of Cuba”) for its poets.

Tours & Amenities

Located just 100 m from Matanzas Bay, our hostel offers services and amenities designed to make your stay at Hostal OCM Versalles easy, convenient, and enjoyable.

Here are some of the excursions we will organize for you

Matanzas City

Matanzas, a prosperous, culturemided city that was founded in 1693 and which some call the Athens of Cuba, in reference to its many poets, and others the Cuban Venice, due to the five bridges that cross it at different streches of its Yumuri and San Juan rivers.

La Arboleda Camping

This place is a lovely riverside park, with various services and activities such as swimming, guided hikes, kayaking, horseback riding, and a couple of restaurants. It’s a great place to spend several hours chilling out.

Playa Coral Snorkeling

With no reefs accessible from the coast in Varadero, your closest bet for a bit of shore snorkeling is the aptly named Playa Coral on the old coastal road (about 3km off the Vía Blanca) halfway between Matanzas and Varadero. There are a reported 300 species of fish here and visibility is a decent 15m to 20m. Decent diving is on offer too.

Rio Canimar Boat Trip

Boat trips on the Río Canímar, 8km east of Matanzas, are a truly magical experience. Gnarly mangroves dip their jungle-like branches into the ebbing water and a warm haze caresses the regal palm trees as your boat slides silently 12km upstream from an insalubrious start beneath the Vía Blanca bridge.

We will organize for you community events and outings around the Matanzas City area. We also offer some in-house amazing experiences such as Introduction to the Cigar Smoking Art, Guitar playing lessons, Cuban cocktail making classes,
And Free salsa lessons too!
