Description of the Matinicus Island vacation cottage rental

Enjoy a relaxing and refreshing get-away vacation in a spacious Maine waterfront cottage on a private island off the coast of Down-East Maine. If you want to truly experience the peace & harmony of "old Maine", then this is definitely the best choice in Maine vacation rentals for you! Sit back and enjoy breath-taking sunrises over nearby islands as you sip your morning coffee on the deck and watch the small lobstering village slowly come to life. Fresh, live lobster and fresh bakery goods are delivered to you by local islanders.

This large (1000 sq/ft), 2-story cottage comfortably sleeps 6 people, is charmingly furnished, and is ideal for families or 2-3 couples to share. The 1st floor has a queen bed in one bedroom, and a queen & 2 twin beds in the other. A full bathroom is accessed from the common hallway with a large deck overlooking the ocean. The second floor has a large dining table (seats 6) and a fully equipped kitchen. A large, open living area with an easy chair, love seat & two couches (one is a fold-out double futon) opens out to a deck overlooking the ocean and outer islands.

Watch fishermen steaming out to haul and land lobsters from the decks of this new waterfront cottage overlooking picturesque Penobscot Bay. A 3-minute walk to the harbor wharf and a 7-minute walk to a beautiful (usually deserted), sandy crescent beach with volleyball at one end and bon-fire pit on the other. A larger sandy crescent beach is just a 20 minute walk (or a 7 minute bike ride) along a dirt road that features gorgeous sweeping views of Criehaven Island (~ 1 mile kayak trip), the setting and inspiration of acclaimed writer Elisabeth Ogilvie's "Bennett's Island" book series. Many of these literary works are in the cottage library, including the "Tide" & "Lover's" Trilogies.

Explore the many hiking trails to nearby bird sanctuaries, hemlock forests, rocky ledge points, and other beautiful swimming beaches. Take a boat ride to Matinicus Rock Lighthouse to see the puffin colonies and the site where the famous heroine lightkeeper, Abbie Burgess, once worked and lived. Prepare for spectacular views of the milky way, planets, stars, & satellites, as Matinicus Island is far from city light pollution. A nearby gift shop features island crafts and novelties. A weekly farmer's market has bakery items, sandwiches, soft drinks, & island crafts. Extra provisions (including beer & wine) can be delivered by plane to a nearby landing strip from the mainland grocery store for a small fee (weather permitting).

Moorings are available and can be reserved ahead. Transportation to and from the island is accomplished by private ferry boats, airplane, and personal water crafts. "Hawthorne Place" cottage is a true remote getaway in every sense.

There is really something magical and emotionally healing about a Matinicus Island vacation . . . perhaps it has something to do with limitless expanses of water, the quiet serenity, and the beautiful surroundings. Come to experience the unique feeling on Matinicus of being in a place that time has truly forgotten. Many couples and families find they have many more opportunities to bond, due to the lack of distractions by commerce, allowing for the renewal of close relationships. There is always more time for relaxation and the cultivation of inner peace on Matinicus Island, far, far away from hectic daily living in an ever-increasingly complicated world.

I found Hawthorne Place cottage to be awesome! The place was clean and neat when I arrived ... and what a view! Every room has fantastic views of the ocean. The decks were a great place to relax and unwind. Matinicus Island is beautiful! I WILL DEFINATELY BE BACK!

Mike, Annmarie & twins,

Thank you for allowing us to use your lovely house. Every time we looked out the window we saw a postcard from Maine.

We came to rest, read, and walk and we did plenty of all three. We loved the quiet, but we especially loved the people. We were "the people who came without food", but God and good neighbors provided. We enjoyed getting to know the island and the people who live here.

We loved the cottage and island. Today is the Puffin cruise. Our daily stops at the bakery kept us fat and happy - I think we sampled just about everything. Sticky buns and ice cream sandwiches were favorites. Read "The Secret Life of Lobsters" while here ... recommend it to anyone ... especially when followed by a meal of real lobster - yum, yum!

Thanks for use of house!

We loved every minute of our vacation on Matinicus. We enjoyed having the living areas on the second floor affording us a magnificent view of the ocean. We've been on the island at least 6 times, so we consider ourselves experts at enjoying all the amenities the island offers. We'll be back !!!
