THINGS TO DO
Watch fisherman steaming out to haul and land lobsters from this charming, newly constructed summer home overlooking picturesque Matinicus Harbor and working waterfront. A three-minute walk to harbor and a five-minute walk to a beautiful (& usually deserted), crescent-shaped sandy beach. Explore the many hiking trails to nearby bird sanctuaries, Hemlock forests, rocky ledge points, and other beautiful swimming beaches ... Kayak or take a boat ride to Criehaven Island and Matinicus Rock Island to see the Puffins. Bring a telescope for spectacular views of the stars and milky way like you have never seen. A nearby gift shop features island crafts and novelties. A weekly (Tuesdays only) local flea/farmer's market has bakery items, sandwiches, soft drinks, & island crafts. Extra provisions can be delivered by plane to a nearby landing strip from the mainland grocery store (Shaw's in Rockland) for a small fee ... weather permitting. Moorings are available and can be reserved ahead for an additional fee. Transportation to and from the island is accomplished via the state ferry, private ferry boats, airplane, and personal water crafts. Far from city lights the night sky at Matinicus Island is a wonder to behold ... bring your telescope! Owner's Website has more pictures and all of the details.
There is also something very mystical and spiritually healing about Matinicus Island ... perhaps it has to do with the limitless expanse of water, the quiet serenity, and the beautiful surroundings. There is more time and solitude for reflection and inner peace on Matinicus ... far away from the hustle & bustle of daily hectic life in a increasingly complicated world. Matinicus Island's lack of "distractions" and its very serene surroundings allows families more opportunities to bond and re-establish close relationships. MAINELY ... you should definately expect lots of "peace and quiet" at Hawthorne Place Cottage!

Dear Michael,
This is truly a wonderful spot! We walked all over the island and enjoyed every minute. We also enjoyed our friendly neighbors, dogs included. Thanks so much for sharing your dear Hawthorne Place with us.

I found Hawthorne Place cottage to be awesome! The place was clean and neat when I arrived ... and what a view! Every room has fantastic views of the ocean. The decks were a great place to relax and unwind. Matinicus Island is beautiful! I WILL DEFINATELY BE BACK!

My husband and I stayed at Hawthorne Place last summer with our two children and we found the whole experience to be delightful! The cottage was neat, clean, and there was a gorgeous view of the ocean from every room.
The island itself is a treasure to behold and it was immediately intoxicating for us. Our children (Emily:9, Colton:6) were fascinated by the island and spent most of their time exploring the many trails & beaches.
I would highly recommend this place to anyone!
Sincerely,
Vikki Davis
