We've rented a lot of vacation houses, but many of them are just a place to sleep with no particular charm. This house was truly lovely and inviting. It was just as nice staying in for the morning, hanging out in the kitchen reading and drinking coffee, admiring the views out the windows front and back. Don't get me wrong, though. You'll want to go outside--the island itself is beautiful, with two white sand beaches and a stunning profusion of butterflies and wildflowers. You are so far away from shore that light pollution is minimal; If you've never seen the milky way, this is a great place to see it. Be prepared, though--going to Matinicus isn't like going to Cape Cod. You really need to be self sufficient--there are a few galleries on the island and a seasonal bakery, but that's it. No ATMs, no mini golf, no grocery stores. You need to be good at entertaining yourself--but if you love the outdoors and appreciate solitude, this place is magic. (One small suggestion--if the brush were cut back a little bit more in back, the views of the Old Cove would be even better.) I sincerely hope it won't be long before we enjoy the hospitality of the Ames again.

Lovely expansive water views surround this peaceful island home. Very comfortable and well equipped for our family vacation. We loved sitting with a book or a cup of coffee on the back lawn overlooking Old Cove. Gorgeous!
Summer 2007, Marvelous views, great house and fun island.
