A short walking distance from Clinica Merida (the home of some of the best medical specialists in Mexico, and a favorite for plastic surgery) Specialists treat you immediately - no referral from a GP required. The IMSS (Mx Medical Plan), a large AKI superstore is only 1 ½ blocks away from the casa, but if you prefer, Wal-Mart is a $27 MP taxi ride away.
There are 5 cocina economicas (inexpensive eateries for take out or, in some cases, eat in…they also deliver to the casa), all these within 2 blocks of the casa – 2 are on the same block!, 2 hair dressers/ beauticians within 1 block, A seafood patio bar/restaurant is no further than one block from here. There are at least 3 Chinese restaurants within a five minute walk.
Copy shops, Internet facilities/faxes, hardware / paint stores, carpentry shops, and upholstery and metal shops are all within one block.
It is only 1 ½ (long) blocks to the Zoo, which is as much an “adult” experience as it is a child’s. The Zoo has trains that circumferences the area every few minutes, many vendors’ stalls, and lots of different types of eating areas. There is even free internet wireless in the park area of the Zoo. It hosts free stage shows, public dancing and entertainment throughout the week. We were amazed at how clean and beautiful this landmark is. There are now two zoos in Merida.
Merida offers many many free events throughout the week. Lots of open air music and dancing - ethnic, as well as public participation. Loads of fun and no expenditure required...
Laundry services (for personal needs) are close at hand and items can be delivered for a small fee. Phone cards for your cells are available across the street from the casa.
We have lots and lots of information in a guest binder that show tours, prices, places of interest, doctors, dentists, night clubs, restaurants etc. and so much moremanicures, pedicures and massages are available in your apt or poolside, with some notice.

This was a fantastic stay! The guesthouse was cozy, quiet, clean, private and stocked with everything we needed. The pool and deck were excellent. The hosts were warm and welcoming, never tired of our questions and were more than willing to help with anything we needed. They gave us guidance, directions, suggestions and even showed us some of the special places in Merida. Can't wait to go back and see our new friends and discover more in this wonderful city! We highly recommend this accomodation but of course only when we aren't there.

I originally found Casa de Cielo Grande on the internet. I was going to be in Merida for a few months, but wanted a friendly and comfortable place to get my bearings before finding an apartment. After doing some more research and contacting Amber and John via Email, I decided that my first week was going to be spent at their lovely home. I am so glad that I decided to do so! First of all, this type of listing is made or broken on the owners. John and Amber definitely make Casa de Cielo Grande a wonderful place to be! Both of them have spent the last three years in Merida and have an intimate knowledge of the area and people that they are more than happy to share. For someone like myself who was planning to stay in Merida, this information was worth its weight in gold. They were both extremely helpful in this regard and walking with John on his morning walk showed me a side of Merida that I would have otherwise missed. The apartment itself is outstanding. As mentioned in the description, it's located in the very back of the property behind the pool, giving the resident(s) complete privacy and even comes with it's own tables and hammocks. The water is hot and pressurized more than any other place I've found so far. The apartment itself comes with all the amenities you could want and there were many times when I put something on the shopping list only to find that Amber and John had already thoughtfully provided it. High speed internet is available and blazing fast, the TV has the platinum package of channels, and the air conditioner works flawlessly. In terms of apartments/houses in Merida, it doesn't get much better than that! :P The surrounding area is outstanding. There is a supermarket only a 5 minute walk away and there are plenty of cocina economicas (small diners) in the neighborhood where a good (and cheap!) meal can be had. Speaking of meals... Let's talk about dinners at Casa del Cielo Grande. Every night, John and Amber cook an absolutely great meal. For a small fee to help with groceries, the guests can join them and I highly, highly recommend they do so. I can't think of the last time I had so many great meals in such a short time. They both love to cook and it shows. Running out of space here, but if it isn't evident, let me just say that Casa de Cielo Grande comes with my highest recommendation if you're planning to stay in Merida. You won't be disappointed with John and Amber's lovely company and accommodations!

John and Amber are the best host and hostess ever! We had a wonderful time. It was a good location and easy to get around. John and Amber were patient with directions and full of local knowledge, it also helped that they can speak Spanish. The accommodations were very comfortable. The pups are great company too.

Amber and John have created an absolute oasis for guests. From the moment we arrived - at almost 11 pm when they greeted us with dinner!! - until the moment we checked out 8 days later, they were the ideal hosts. They are kind, gracious, welcoming, and warm. The casita is a little jewel, fully equipped, and absolutely private. And no worries if you're not a 'clothing optional' guest - optional is the operative word. We chose to stay clothed and it was never an issue. Amber, a fabulous baker, brought us fresh from the oven cinnamon rolls that were heavenly. In addition to our welcome dinner, John and Amber invited us for dinner on the eve of our departure - a delicious meal (and they insisted we take some leftovers to our next place!) This was a truly five star experience and we would recommend this, without reservation, to anyone.

This is one of the best vacations we have ever had. Amber and John go out of their way to make their guests feel at home. Everything for one's comfort and even more is to be found in the apartment, including needles and thread. Our hosts are laid back, interesting and kind people, who did all they could to make our stay worthwhile, even to inviting us to share their Christmas and New Year's Eve fetes with their friends. We were absolutely relaxed, and so able to enjoy this interesting city and its surroundings. We would love to return. What more can we say? Thank you amber, John and "children" for a superior holiday.

We recently returned from a weekend stay at Casa del Cielo Grande. in (the Santiago neighbourhood) Merida. We were impressed with the fresh appearance and cleanliness of the front entrance and throughout the facility. Expats Canadians, John & Amber Klontieg have owned the property since 2008 and spent considerable time and money constantly upgrading. The pool and deck area was cleaned and maintained daily as was the common area. Palms and greenery have added some coolness to Merida's hot sun. The apartment, which was our home for the weekend, was unbelievably equipped with everything imaginable including a veggie steamer! We soon began to relax and fell under the charm of our hosts and their beautiful setting. Casa del Cielo Grande is well located withinin walking distance of Santiago park, grocery stores and local bakeries. We also enjoyed listening to the stories of moving to and living in Mexico. Although attentative to our needs and requests they also gave us our space and we never felt we were intruding. The pool was refreshingly welcome in Merida's November heat. The apt/guesthouse is advertised as clothing optional and we were never made to feel uncomfortable about our choice of attire or otherwise. We hightly recommend staying here and look forward to a longer stay next time. Some notable hi-lites are: outside grills for cooking; bar stool swing seats at the Tiki Bar; local birds; cactus garden; several eating areas; poolsde showers and washroom, our hosts good taste.

I am sooooo impressed! This place is a mimi resort and was simply awesome! I've been to many 5 star resorts in Mexico and others in various places around the world that cook up Chilli Relenos, but none compared to Johns! Invited to diner by our hosts & treated to an outstanding meal, I had them again the next day for breakfast & lunch! Such great hospitality! This was THE most relaxed vacation I have ever had and didn't mind exposing parts that haven't seen the sun. We found the relaxed atmostphere & our perfect accomodations absolutley great with a pool right outside the door, & fun visits with our hosts at the bar, & occasional Mexican stop in friends of theirs, made our visit much more interesting that our normal semi annual vacations elsewhere. I would kinda like to keep this place a secret but I understand that the secret is getting out so I'd best get my next visit booked as I've been dreaming about going back and shouldn't procrastinate. We loved having our own special "Casita" & the hospitality was 2nd to none! We WILL be back! Gracias Amigo & Amiga! Chuck (Carlito) & his little redhead

It’s been about 3 months since our one month stay at Mi Cielo Grande and we are STILL talking about our wonderful experience. We stayed in an amazing guest house that had all the amenities that we could ever need. John and Amber were gracious hosts and treated us like family. We will always treasure our friendship that emerged from the many happy hour and dinner conversations we had. We were a little apprehensive about the “clothing optional” pool at first since both of us had never experienced such an option before. It turned out to be an AWESOME experience for us and we felt completely comfortable. What started out to be a working vacation, evolved into a second honeymoon for us. We are looking forward to the next time we visit our friends in beautiful Merida. We 100% recommend Mi Cielo Grande to anyone who is looking for a tranquil and relaxing oasis in the middle of a busy city like Merida.

This is by far the best place we have ever stayed at anywhere. It is impecably clean and has everything you would ever need. John keeps the pool and grounds absoultly neat and clean. It is also within walking distance of all the markets as well as the plaza. John and Amber are the most wesome people on the face of the earth making sure that everything is just right for your stay. They both went above and beyond to make sure our stay was enjoyable and are two people I now consider my good friends and will keep in touch with. My wife raved about the margaritas John made and I cant wait to go back to get the great RUM drinks he is famous for! If you stay at their place I gaurentee to will be thrilled with the great casita they have and be even more thrilled meeting two of the beat people on this earth. They are also a great source of information on Merida and anything you need to know about the area. I will be back every chance I get. Muchas gracias John and Amber for the best week of vacation ever!

John and Amber have designed their property so you have complete privacy if you wish even with an outdoor lounge area. The pool is very private and clean as well as the grounds. Location is awesome, walking distance to food and drink, even to a central area for night entertainment. The guesthouse has everything you need and much more. Amber has tastefully finished it herself. John and Amber are so helpful with ideas on getting around and what's happening in this beautiful city they live in. Watch out for "the bar" outside, it's just too much fun with great music and margaritas. If you don't like it...no problemo, they'll just shut it down. This is your safe home while you visit Merida. We enjoyed ourselves and it was thanks to John and Amber. Have a great stay!

Upon arriving we were welcomed by John & Amber. This casa is amazing! We would HIGHLY recommend a stay here. The apartment had absolutely everything you could want to be comfortable. Very Clean. Good Bed. Cooking was not a problem the market is within walking distance as well as restaurants, park and zoo. John helped us get taxis and both Amber & John were very informative about Merida and its sights. The pool area was wonderful as well as beautiful...nothing left to want here everything was provided, towels, rafts, lotions you name it and Amber had thought of it. We cannot say enough good things about our stay...maybe the best vacation yet!

Family, but they travel extensively (3-4 mo each year for the last 40 years) in Barbados. They said the guesthouse far surpasses what they have rented in the West Indies, and in Mexico in between.
I will leave the rest of the testimonials up to the guests that have stayed here.:)
We are friendly, accommodating and helpful. We really enjoy people in general, and it's important to us that our guests feel at home and comfortable. We want you to enjoy yourselves during your stay with us.
We will and do respect people at all times and will be considerate to your wishes - We look forward to many "return" visitors :)
