About our Area...
Tucked away, just 60 miles outside of Chicago is the Midwest’s best-kept secret. Nestled between massive sand dunes, the small beach towns of Michiana offer the very best a vacation has to offer. Once the premier summer destination for wealthy Chicagoan's escaping the summer heat in the early 20th century, the area has a rich history, with many families vacationing here for generations. In the quiet and peaceful rental homes of Michiana Beach Rentals, the secret is now yours to discover. Our pristine beaches are made of soft, smooth sand found only three places in the world. This dune land area constitutes the largest group of freshwater dunes on earth. Carl Sandburg once wrote that they were "to the Midwest what the Grand Canyon is to Arizona and the Yosemite to California". Visit the Indiana Dunes National Lake shore or just take a walk down our beach. You will be fascinated by the squeaking sound of the sand along the water’s edge. This is often referred to as "singing sands." The phenomenon only occurs in a band of beach about 25-100 feet wide parallel to the water’s edge. The singing noise is caused by the vibration between the tiny sand particles as they rub against each other when you walk along the top of the sand. It only happens near the water because the sound is produced when a thin film of water created by wave spray coats the sand. Perfect for a family day of fun, strolling for beach glass, or escaping with a good book. Clear, warm water roll ashore inviting swimming, fishing, boating, and all water sports, while the private beaches are the perfect place for your late night bonfire!

I want to begin by saying that the homeowner was very pleasant and nice to work with. She allowed us to check in early which was helpful. Our family had a good time being with one another on the patio, a nice space. That is the end of the positives. The house was filthy and in disrepair. There are three bedrooms. None of the beds are what would be considered comfortable. One bed was broken in half. The master bed had a previous renters lacy black thong underneath it. The queen bed room is passable. There are at least three sofa beds but all are slip covered and sporting dog hair. There is a twin bed in the rec room downstairs that I was told wasn't horrible if you could get past the spider webs, dead bugs, and water damaged, sagging ceiling tiles. There is only one shower in the house. The jacuzzi tub downstairs was not used due to fear of cleanliness. The can light over the sink in that bathroom has a constant drip, making make up application a challenge. The kitchen is covered in a film of grease. Counter tops, cabinet doors, and dishes were sticky. Most of the shelves and drawers in the refrigerator were broken. All of the floors were dirty. On the first evening there a bottle of seltzer water exploded on the floor and when wiped up, the paper towels were literally black. Toilets needed to be closely monitored. We were warned not to "overstuff" them and to use nothing but toilet paper but despite our best efforts the upstairs toilet continually stopped itself. I could go on but I want to say again that the host was gracious and I don't want to be mean. I simply want others to avoid the same mistake we made. The pictures on this site have to be at least ten years old. We expected a place that was cozy and lived in but CLEAN. There is too much clutter throughout the house and it is obvious it hasn't had a deep cleaning in quite a long time. The beach (a 15 minute walk away) was nice but not close enough to consider it a BEACH house. It was quite a walk hauling beach chairs, blankets, towels, umbrella, etc. I was very confused when pulling up after the headline for the house and picture of the sun setting on the water. Very misleading. If time and effort were to be put into proper cleaning, a fresh coat of bright paint, updating old battered furniture and beds, and general maintenance issues, this place could be a great little vacation home. As it is, I recommend continuing your search! It was not worth what we paid.

All rooms were great! Perfect accessibility to a BEAUTIFUL private beach. Plenty of sheets/towels for use. A little on the older side, but it was overall good. Needs some cleaning up, lots of "stuff" in the home. There were 2 bathrooms, but only 1 shower between 12 people. I would stay here again in the future..
Our stay at Susan's house was great. Lots of room inside in cool a/c and out on the screened porch and multiple patios, and just a short walk to the beach, we couldn't have asked for a better vacation or a better host! We'll definitely be back.
