With an abundance of crystal water running down the mountains into its rivers, lakes, and picturesque creeks, the extraordinary natural beauty of the Schoharie Valley is one of the best kept secrets of New York. Originally inhabited by the Mohawak nation, the area has a rich history of local lore, Revolutionary War tales, and Native American legends.
There are an endless array of outdoor adventures in the area: hiking trails, camping sites, mountain bike trails, whitewater rafting/kayaking, and ski resorts, (the closest of which is Plattekill Mountain). Just a few miles from the house is Vroman's Nose, a mountain with a beautiful hour long hiking path and a spectacular view of the valley. Minekill State Park and the Gilboa dam are also within a 20 minute drive.
If antiquing is your thing, the area is an antique bargain-hunter’s paradise. The local shops offer a cornucopia od early Americana, turn of the century china and flatware, depression-era glass, etc..
For local flowers and produce, try Barber's Farmers Market or Shaul's Market. For organic local meat, Sap Bush Hollow is only 4 miles away ... and you can always pick your own fruit when it is in season at farms along route 30.
If you want to go exploring on a rainy day, you can head to the nearby town of Cobleskill to visit the underground waterfall of Howe's Caverns, spend a few hours at the Iroquois Museum, or catch a first run movie at the Park Theater for $4.00. Of course, you can also just stay home, curl up with a good book, and listen to the birds sing and the water falling all around you.

With 4 boys ages 9 through 14, it is difficult to find a family vacation that appeals to everyone. This place has it all; relaxation, adventure, and proximity to attractions like Howe Caverns as well as local pleasantries like farm stands and antique shops. The house itself was full of character and enough intimate places for some quiet time, like the side porch and an indoor hammock. We only stayed a few days, and we hiked miles up the river, swam in the waterfalls, hunted for fossils, and explored the woods. The fire pit off the back porch was a warm and cozy way to end each day. Even out two dogs had the time of their lives, watching hummingbirds feed in the mornings and swimming in the pools by the waterfalls. We will absolutely be making this place a family tradition!

The Sparrow House was just the perfect getaway for my friends and I to enjoy upstate NY during the fall. Despite the chillier autumn temps the waterfalls were most enjoyable and a true hidden gem. The fire pit was a highlight for us - where we enjoyed good food, drink, conversation and stars!! Vroman's nose nearby offered spectacular views of the valley and was a pleasantly easy hike for all. The property was perfect for our cooped up NYC dogs who thoroughly enjoyed the weekend as well!! Bethany was so helpful and accommodating - we are definitely planning a trip back in the summer season. Thanks so much!!

The place was amazing! We went with our dog and another couple who also brought their dog and it was plenty of room for all of us. The dogs loved having the yard to run around in and we loved that it was fenced in and didn't have to worry about them. The house had everything we needed for a comfortable stay and even a fire pit in the backyard to roast marshmallows on. The walk to the waterfall was fantastic and the dogs enjoyed swimming in the water. Even the drive up from the city is scenic. I'd recommend making the drive during daylight just so you can enjoy the views. Perfect weekend getaway, definitely recommend to anyone, but especially dog owners, looking to get a peaceful weekend in nature.

It was a cute farm cottage, however, this is the first time I've stayed at a rental where the owner did not remove any of her belongings. We felt as if she left the cottage 5 minutes before we arrived and would be back 5 minutes after we departed. All her personal items were around the house, the frig had food in it, the freezer was full, there were hand creams, toothpaste, brushes, food and all sorts of personal items all around the house , making it quite awkward. There were no empty shelves or cabinets in the kitchen for us to put our belongings, and thus we had to keep everything on the counters and table. We weren't sure if we should be using her food or not. The house was quite clean and the surrounding lawn, etc. was lovely, there were many sitting chairs and a lovely hammock. The mountain view was spectacular as were the falls and the swimming hole, which my husband enjoyed but was too cold for me. The clay beds at the bottom were also a delight. Although I was told to bring my own towels, there were many in each bathroom. Also, it was advertised that there was a microwave, we could not find any, and when I called the owner she said "oh I guess it broke and we'll have to take that off the list of items." I had asked if there was air conditioning and the owner told me you won't need it but in any case there are ceiling fans. She neglected to mention there is one ceiling fan in the work area of the kitchen and one in the sitting room, but none in the bedrooms. There was a window fan and a free standing fan in the bedroom which we did use. The bed could also use updating and the squeaks and creaks were not a welcoming sound. I'm just wondering if anyone else had such an experience where you really felt as if the owner was occupying the house together with you, and as such why were you paying such a hefty price for your stay? We tried to not let this impact our vacation and thus made sure to enjoy it.

Our family had a pleasure of being in Sparrow House for a week. We were very happy and satisfied with our stay. The cottage is in quite, private property with easy access to water falls. You can go to swim there and very likely that in this beauty you will be alone surrounded with calming splashes of falling waters. Mrs Bethany is very helpful and friendly and her directions and instructions are everything you need to go the area.We went to Vroman nose (local hiking object with magnificient views!) with 2 kids 4 and 9 and completed our stay filled with joy from the realm of Mother Nature.Strongly recommended it.
Shout out! We just got back from the farm cottage and it was heaven! We went with another couple who have an 8year old and an almost 2 year old and we all had a terrific time. It was even better than the pictures, a beautiful waterfall just a short hike down from the cottage.
We grilled every night, and the babies got to roam the perfectly kept, grassy fenced in yard. The hike down to the water was easy enough for us to take our babies (ehm, toddlers) down to the very private clay pools and waterfall. On top of that, the porch had a watercolor easel set up for the babes, as well as an inflatable pool, a swing set, and a hammock. At night we roasted marshmallows by the fire pit and drank wine. It was a lovely city escape. Many vegetable stands on the way up, and beautiful windy roads to bike on, as well as trails to hike.
It was truly a pleasure all around, and we were sad to leave the beautiful land.
Thanks so much!
