Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge
Trap Pond State Park
Freshwater wetlands once covered a large portion of southwestern Sussex County. Trap Pond State Park retains a part of the swamp's original beauty and mystery, and features the northernmost natural stand of Bald Cypress trees in the United States.
Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1963 under the authority of the Migratory Bird Conservation Act for use as an inviolate sanctuary, or any other management purpose, expressly for migratory birds. It is located on the west shore of Delaware Bay, approximately 22 miles southeast of Dover, the State capital, and 64 miles southeast of Wilmington, Delaware.
The refuge is considered to have one of the best existing wetland habitat areas along the Atlantic Coast. The intensively managed freshwater impoundments have become important stop-over sites for spring and fall migrating shorebirds and wading birds. Endangered and threatened species management activities provide habitat for the Delmarva fox squirrel, nesting bald eagles and migrating peregrine falcons. Neotropical land birds passing through utilize the refuge's upland forested habitat during the fall and spring. The refuge's 10,000 acres are a diverse landscape featuring freshwater and salt marshes, woodlands, grasslands, scrub-brush habitats, ponds, bottomland forested areas, a 7-mile long creek, and agricultural lands. These cover types provide habitat for approximately 267 species of birds, 35 species of reptiles and amphibians and 36 different mammals.
Public use at Prime Hook provides compatible wildlife-oriented recreational opportunities. Since the signing of the National Wildlife Refuge System Improvement Act of 1997, appropriate public uses of the Refuge System include six major wildlife-dependent recreational uses and are: hunting, fishing, wildlife observation, photography, environmental education, and environmental interpretation.
The Refuge is open 1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset.

A cozy getaway
September 25, 2013
What a charming beach cottage. My boyfriend and I were looking for a serene vacation. We got just what we were looking for. The weather was absolutely beautiful. We spent a lot of time on the beach and on the deck. I must say very nice. We actually have a family beach home in Slaughter; however, a family member seems to be holding it hostage at the moment. We absolutely love this beach, especially if you are looking for alittle R&R. The cottage itself had so much character and the thought the owners put into it was wonderful. Everything we could have possibly needed was right there. The only negative thing, I can say is the mattresses on the full size beds are not very comfortable. But everything else made this seem minuscule.Thank you for a wonderful stay and we would definitely stay here again!

quiet community, relaxing setting

My husband, 21 year old daughter and I enjoyed this cottage. A plus for us to have a fenced in yard for the dog, and she really enjoyed the freedom! The hose worked well to remove sand from the dog after beach adventures and was always a pleasantly warm temperature. The dog loved the shallow bay waters and would stand at the back door barking to go out to the beach. The path to the beach was well lit with solar lanterns. The neighbor to the south had a child that was fearful of the dog. We tried to alleviate his fears and take the dog inside when requested. Sunsets were beautiful! The sleeping porch with a queen size bed was very cozy, and also two bedrooms with great double beds. The Martin family was most accommodating! Thank you very much!

We loved having our dogs with us for a week of peace and quiet. The shallow water and small waves are wonderful for small children, dogs, and older folks. The cottage was clean, friendly and comfortable. Only met one neighbor, up the street a ways. Very nice couple. LOTS of cats wandering loose - just be aware if you are bringing dogs. Was wrongly accused by a resident as having our dogs off leash. Those were our only two issues. The agency was pleasant to deal with. The owners have done a fine job of furnishing and stocking the cottage for comfort and convenience. It reminded us of various lodgings from childhood vacations. Real bonus was the extremely short walk to the beach to swim, then to hose off on the porch, the ability to have a nice time swimming and fishing without having to get in the car and go somewhere else. We would definitely consider returning.

Nice Family Vacation

Very nice cottage on the beach..the kids and dog loved it. Liked how private the beach was, my husband and kids enjoyed floating in the bay on the inner tubes that were there for us to use. Chairs are waiting for you on the beach..there are plenty of toys, game and movies for the family to use. The kitchen has everything you will need and then some. There was only a short drive to stores, boardwalk and parks. The owner have given it a lot of thought to making your stay enjoyable.

My family just returned from our stay at Slaughter Beach. The cottage had everything we needed. The views were spectacular. I loved having the beach all to ourselves. The short walk to the beach was awesome. Very quiet area, for more activities just take a short drive (appx 20 minutes) to Rehobeth. The only thing that I would change is to check the central air conditioning. The cottage did get warm during the day (appx 80 degrees inside) It may have been the extreme heat wave that the east coast had. Other than that I definitely would return

The house is great just next to the beach. You can walk back and forth dozens of time, because it is literally 30-40 feet away. It is home away from home. The owners have thought to make it cozy for everyone. It has plenty of toys and games for every age. They have about 8 bikes, two canoes, tennis racquets, (there is a tennis field, 0.4 miles away). It is very queit. It is like your own private beach. The only reason i gave four stars is the muddy beach. There is nothing the owner of the house can do about this though. If you are a swimmer (as my family is) it would not be the best place out there. The high tide and low tide vary a lot. At certain hours the sea would withdraw 50 yards away, you would have to walk in mud to go to the sea, and when the sea comes back all the mud makes the water look dirty. Had the sea been a little clearer, I would not change this place for any other place in the world, and I have visited many many many places. If you just want to sail, fish, walk by the beach, and have different activites it is the perfect place.

Great family vacation place

Stayed here during Thanksgiving. Great place to enjoy view of the ocean and walk the beach. Very peaceful. My dog loved it! Warm and cozy. Fully stocked with linens, towels, cooking utensils and nonperishable items.
A great time

The beach cottage was well supplied, adequately clean, a great location, thoroughly enjoyable. We were blessed with great weather. We so much appreciated the use of the kayaks. It is not fancy. It doesn't need to be. The one suggestion we have is about "directions". Both Mapquest and GPS managed to leave different ones of us thoroughly confused and temporarily lost in getting from Milford to the cottage itself. Perhaps some better directions through and out of Milford could be included in the owners' information sheets. In the dark, which is when we were all arriving, it is difficult to locate. Thank you.
Cottage on Beach on Slaughter Beach

Quaint cottage had everything you would need (except toilet paper), bikes of all sizes, toys and chairs for beach, canoes, swings, and even sticks to roast marshmellows. It could use a deep cleaning, but it was comfortable, roomy, and a short walk down a little path to the sand and ocean, with very few people.

August 2012 Beach Vacation
August 27, 2012
Our blended family of 7 (2 adults, 5 kids) enjoyed our beach vacation at this cottage very much. The kids missed the bigger waves of the ocean compared with the bay but we thought it was perfect for our young family. No one was knocked over and beaten up by waves and the water stayed relatively shallow for quite some distance from shore. My sons and I especially loved "hunting" for treasures during low tide when we could walk for hundreds of feet off-shore in ankle deep water. There were tons of beautiful rocks but not many shells. The cottage was roomy and could sleep 12 comfortably. My only complaints would be the living room seating area did not accomodate all of us at the same time and I wish there were two queen beds in case two families decided to come together. It was difficult sleeping on a double bed with my partner after being used to our queen at home. (and our 5 year old who sneaks in during the night!) The 10am check-out time was very difficult because all the bath towels and bedding had to be washed, dried and folded on the beds before leaving. Try getting a family of 7 up at 6am to wash the sheets after sleeping in for almost a week. It's not a pretty picture!! The "outside shower" I was looking forward to turned out to be a garden hose with a sprayer attachment hooked over a plant hanger. I was expecting a real hot/cold outdoor shower. But these are minor things compared with the price of the cottage and the experiences and memories our family shared there. The hose and the foot rinse eliminated much of the inevitable sand in the sheets! There were sand toys, boogie boards, bikes and water shoes in the garage to use. The outside deck was pleasant but you can't beat the beautiful beach chairs in 6 sunny colors waiting at the beach with a beautiful view, which is literally 25 steps away. The kids came and went to the beach all day long, taking a break from the sun now and then. The beach was VERY quiet, meaning there were almost no people on it day or night. My partner said he missed the people watching but I didn't miss the crowds at all. It was great knowing we would have a perfect spot at the beach every day no matter what time we decided to make our appearance. Since the cottage was pet friendly we were also able to bring our cat. She spent her days lounging and napping, trying out a different bed each day. I would recommend this beach cottage to any family. The landlords are friendly & easy to work with. Thank You!!
Beach chairs waiting for you!
July 9, 2012
Arrived in the middle of a July heat wave to a delightfully quirky little dollhouse of a beach cottage! It was clean, comfy beds, glorious view of the water, and best of all.....4 beach chairs waiting for you at the top of the beach. Spent a relaxing week in those chairs! The house was perfect for us (3 adult women, ages 56 - 92) The beach-level deck "boardwalk"out to the beach made it perfect for older guest using a walker, as did having the main bedrooms on one floor. Loved checking out the different sea-life (horseshoe crabs, blue, black snails, turtles). Close enough to Milford and Lewes for groceries, shopping, etc, . The locals were so friendly; inviting us to share a bonfire, or join their tent at the July 4th Regatta. A great selection of movies and toys for anyone visiting with families/children. Best of all, was a great place for our 2 dogs to romp in the sand and enjoy the water without being overcome by huge waves. Would definitely recommend this cottage and woudl most definitely stay there again! The owners were very responsive to my emails and provided a great Welcome Book with interesting factts, articles and helpful info.

awesome!! the house was well equipped. Beach access was terrific. Even when the beaches were red flagged..Our location was great. Lots of things to do. Our family had a great time
Lovely place to stay
September 18, 2011
I have stayed at this beach house with friends every August for a few years now and I absolutely love it every time! The house is adorably decorated and can sleep a lot of people! The porch in the back is perfect for cook outs, tanning and relaxing. The bay is always pleasant to go swimming in, I suggest taking an inflatable tube or chair out there, it is soooo relaxing. This is a great place for a beach getaway especially if you want to avoid the crowds but still get in some sun and fun in the water. And the great thing is if you feel like going into the busier areas where Rehoboth and other beaches are it is only a short drive away. Overall, I highly recommend the place and will continue going back there every summer with friends!!

Awesome place for kids and pets!
August 19, 2011
Absolutly loved the cottage at the bay! Family and pet friendly. A+++! Rooms were immaculate. Has everything you need as far as cooking/cleaning ammenities. My daughter (2year old) loved the beach here as opposed to Roehobeth's the large waves were too much for her. The low tides at the bay were much better, she wasn't scared at all. Also Seashell hunting was excellet there. It was great also because it was QUIET. If you needed anything you are a 20 min drive from either Dover or Roehobeth, so you can still do all the fun boardwalk things. The people that lived in slaughter beach were also very friendly and kind to both my family and my dog. Would recommend to anyone!
August 5, 2011
The house was wonderful! A few college friends and i wanted a change of pace from the usual va beaches and were thrilled to stay here. We wanted to be close enough to the Rehobeth area to go out a few nights, but far enough so as to avoid the daily traffic, congestion, and hubub of overcrowded vacay areas. We LOVED being able to relax and reconnect here! It is a definitely go if you want to get away and appreciate the beauty of the Deleware Bay and natural dunes.
LOVE THIS BEACH HOUSE!
August 4, 2011
This beach house is great if you are trying to get away from the crowds at nearby Rehobeth and is right on the water for quick beach access. Perfect for lazy summer days by the water and for young children that are not ready for the ocean. I have been to this beach house several times and have taken advantage of the nearby tennis court and play ground, and loved grilling out back and making bonfires on the beach at night. Perfect for family reunions and get-togethers with friends. The house has a friendly charm and room for the whole extended family. The neighborhood is quiet and the neighbors are very friendly if you happen to spot one! I highly recommend this house and using all the beach amenities it has to offer!
