Mandalay experience

March 12, 2013

We enjoyed this bright, cozy, tidy, 2-story unit. The owners kindly drove us to the grocery store after we arrived. It is a short bus ride or a 20 minute walk. There is filtered water in the kitchen and fridge so bottled water is not necessary. There is a small safe in the master bedroom closet that was perfect for extra cash and passports. Our only disappointment was that the 2nd bedroom had a double bed (not 2 singles as listed) but they offered a blow up mattress which was fine. The condo is a 15 minute bus ride from Nassau ($1.25 for adults). I wouldn't recommend renting a car as the residents drive very fast and on the left. The nearest beach is a 5 minute walk but we found it to have a lot of garbage and broken glass. The nicer beach is at Sandyport (10 minutes on foot). Goodman beach is a bus ride away and probably worth a visit. We went on a snorkeling trip with Stuart's Cove ($70/person). They can pick you up at the corner (Nesbitt's). The sea was quite choppy and being a strong swimmer was necessary as you swim off the boat in 20 ft water. Food is more expensive than home. Consider packing coffee, sugar, peanut butter, condiments, granola bars. Beer is very expensive but rum and wine are very reasonable. The owners provided hand soap but not bath soap. We tried the local cuisine at Nesbitt's one night. The take-out was quite slow so call ahead. Even our picky eater enjoyed the conch fritters. There is a BBQ out back. The deck and pool areas are really nice for relaxing. On the whole, a very pleasant experience. I'd give the week 8/10 and the property 3.5/5

Great Vacation Apartment

July 4, 2011

Mandalay was a perfect choice for the four of us on our vacation at New Providence, Bahamas. The apartment was clean and nicely organized with plenty of space and it had all the appliances necessary. Each bed room had its own air conditioning unit. The neighborhood felt safe and quiet and all the people we met in Bahamas were really friendly. Our landlord was a very nice and helpful gentleman. He told us everything worth to know about New Providence. The apartment also have a patio outside, where we spent several evenings enjoying the local beer Kalik. But don't forget to bring your bug spray. We rented a car one day ($70) to cruise around the island and go to some more remote beaches. I can recommend going to Love Beach/Nirvana beach with some nice snorkeling right off the beach. They charge $5 dollars "entrance" but we had the whole beach for ourselves. There was also a small restaurant with fair prices. I recommend trying the grouper and the conch. That is actually what I ate the entire week, grouper and conch! In Bahamas you have to drive on the left side of the road. We all felt a bit tense about it so one day with a rental car was enough for us. The small beach close to Mandalay apartment was ok. We had our best snorkeling experience right there with the widest range of different sea creatures, but this beach is not the cleanest and it is very close to the road. There were some crushed bottles laying around and we found a lot of clothes in the water. If you don't mind the traveling required to get to the really nice beaches (we mostly hung out by the Sheraton hotel beach with free beach chairs! Approx. 7-10 min by buss from Mandalay) or to be among the crowd downtown, then Mandalay is an excellent vacation rental. I would warmly recommend this apartment to friends and family.

Very nice and convenient stay

February 16, 2011

Very nice and clean place. 2min walking distance from a small beach, it is also conveniently located from a bus stop that will get you anywhere along West Bay St and downtown for just $1.25 per person from 6am to 6pm, after it's by taxi (which can be a bit expensive based on where you go for example Atlantis was $35 for 5 people)) The landlord/landlady are very nice and helpful. They provided us with extra towels, and useful information before and during our trip. The area looked pretty safe too.

Mandalay is great

Review Submitted February 12, 2012 Date of Stay January 3, 2012
We had a wonderful stay at Mandalay. Peter and Mary were great. They picked up a few groceries and beer for us for our initial arrival which was great. Mandalay is just like living at home. We were able to relax and do absolutley nothing if we wanted. The beach is close if that's what you want to do, Nesbitts is only a couple of blocks away and has great burgers and beer for a good price. Take a bus ride out to Compass Point for $1.50 and enjoy the beautiful colors of the water and buildings. Also they have half price pizza from 3-5 and beer specials from 5-7 every day. The grocery store is just a short bus ride or about a 2 mile walk. I would definetly recommend the place. Peter even got a brand new grill for the place. I can not think of a thing that was wrong. Loved all of it!

It was the first time we booked a vacation rental online so we were a little skeptical but as soon as we got to beautiful Nassau and arrived at the property we were completely relieved. Peter and Mary met us upon arrival in order to show us the place and give us the keys. They were great. We realized we had nothing to worry about and made a great decision to book this place. They were so forthcoming with information we needed to know. They gave us the complete rundown on the island and where to go, how to get there, etc. We truly appreciated their hospitality. Mandalay was truly a "home away from home". Perfect for the 2 of us and spacious enough for a family. Clean and fresh, beautiful furniture, secure, fully furnished and equipped with everything you could possibly need. They really thought of everything vacationers would need including ready made ice in the freezer! As we were strictly on vacation for some R&R, we did not rent a car. But there is car and scooter rental places nearby for those of you who want to venture around Nassau. We opted instead to use the public transport (Bus #10) which is just down the street on West Bay. Keep in mind that the bus runs until about 7pm so if you take the bus out, you may need to take a taxi back home. The bus took us everywhere we needed to go within 5-20 minutes : Grocery store, Crystal Palace Casino, shopping, Fish Fry, downtown Nassau. We went to gorgeous SandyPort beach everday. It was a 10 minute walk. The beach was calm, the water crystal clear, sometimes we had the beach to ourselves! Just us and the seaturtles in the water....don't forget to bring your snorkelling gear. Other days when the cruiseships were in, there was a group or two of cruisers who were taxied in to spend a few relaxing hours at Sandyport Beach. When the cruisers are in, there is also jetskis for those of you who want some water sport activity. The Poop Deck Restaurant is at Sandyport....they have great burgers and Pina Coladas! So for those of you looking for a vacation rental....Mandalay is spacious, airy, bright, and in a great location. You will not regret booking Mandalay. We would definitely recommend this property to friends and family. Alexandra and Joe from Montreal

Review #1592113 "Very Enjoyable Week at Mandalay"

We had a very enjoyable week at Mandalay. We spent a lot of time on the local beaches which have beautiful clean sand and crystal clear water, and which are only a few minutes walk away (tip: on the nearest beach, at the end of Poets Drive, walk to the far side of the house at the western end of the beach for a lovely sandy beach with no rocks). There were only a few other people around so it was a pleasant contrast to the resort/hotel beaches. We used the buses to get around though if you want to have much choice for eating out in the evenings you'll have to use taxis to get back if you don't have a car. The Poop Deck restaurant is within walking distance and is in a good location next to the beach but, depending on your budget, it's perhaps a bit too pricey to eat there every night. We took a snorkelling trip with the Stuart Cove's company and though we had to go to one of the hotels on Cable Beach for pick-up they dropped us off at the end of Poets Drive on the return journey. We had a fun day out at Atlantis and got there via bus to down-town and then ferry to the resort. Mandalay itself suited us very well, clean, with all the facilities we needed, and located in a quiet neighbourhood.
