Lovely home in magical place
May 10, 2013
The moment we walked in to Casa Palomita we felt at home; the gurgling sound of falling water, the colours, the tasteful local decor -- all combined to put us completely at ease. And Lu is a guardian angel. She makes sure that everything goes well. The location was perfect; a quick walk to everywhere, with 35-40 peso taxi rides if we were feeling lazy. We also enjoyed fast internet and were able to make several long distance Skype phone calls successfully. The building is secure, which didn't seem necessary but was nice to know.

A real treasure
April 15, 2013
We just came back from a wonderful stay at Casa Palomita. It is a real gem -- lovingly designed and cared for. It was so nice to wake up to bird song, take an easy walk into the town center, then come back home in the heat of the day to this peaceful retreat. It is also just a quick walk up the hill to a fabulous organic farmer's market on Friday and Saturday. The house is perfectly maintained, and has a wonderful open kitchen area that is well-stocked. The two bedrooms/bathrooms are set up so that multiple people can enjoy the house with just the right mix of togetherness and privacy. Caretaker Lu is a lovely, thoughtful, helpful person. Other great touches: beautiful art on the walls, cell phones you can load up and use (so convenient!), and a binder full of recommendations for restaurants, drivers, and things to do.

A beautiful home in Oaxaca
April 11, 2013
We recently spent a month at Casa Palomita, our third visit, and hopefully just one in a much longer series. Our good friend Jorge, the manager, moved on this year to another position, but his friend Lulu has replaced him, and she is both delightful company and a very responsible overseer of the house. Since our first review, Maria has continued to add much artwork to the house, as well as a number of other improvements to already superb accomodations. Recent additions include a full length mirror in the master bedroom, and very good roll down shades on the glass doors to the patio for additional privacy. We invited friends over for dinner one of the first nights we were there, and they marveled at the beauty and comfort of the house. It's particularly a pleasure to have such ample clothes storage, both drawers and hanging, since we bring a lot with us for a month! Casa Palomita remains a delight; we feel fortunate that Maria allows us to consider it our 'second home", as well as hers, and other return guests. If guests visit soon, be sure to see the remarkable exhbiits at botht the Textile Museum and the Museum of Regional Cultures, if they are still there.

Our return to Casa Palomita
April 11, 2013
This year makes the third visit to Casa Palomita. Every season we are greeted with new improvements. This year we found new art work, new faucets and a new counter in the master bathroom. I am looking forward to next winter to find out what awaits us. The heart of the house is the kitchen and it is a pleasure to be able to prepare food and serve it either at the counter or at the dining room table. The open floor plan makes socializing with friends very fluid. Maria has generously provided everything one needs to prepare food and ample utensils. The beds are perfect as are the bathrooms, and of course the patio is a great place to read, visit and have a meal. I consider this my second home (as do many other guests, I'm sure) Ellen Bernstein and Ron Manganiello

Lovely house, yet close enough to el Centro to wa
December 1, 2012
I second all the positive remarks that came before. The house was put together with care and love. Lots of attention to detail, good quality kitchen supplies, thick towels, etc. The well thoughtout floorplan allows for maximum privacy for each bedroom/bathroom suite. The location is excellent., close enough to the center to walk there quickly, but in a neighborhood with it's own streets to explore and restaurants to visit. I loved walking to the aquaduct past the click clack of weavers, the beautiful gates of the Children's Library and the view of the Sierra Norte on my route. Vidal, the house's recommended driver is a jewel. Over the month, we probably hired him 10 times. He was always prompt and his driving skills are calm and cautious. His English level and my Spanish level are not great, but we both took the opportunity to learn from each other. I already him. The house is beautiful, the resources of travel books, maps, the house brochure with restaurants, guides, drivers, suggestions all make for an easy landing in a culturally rich city.

A great two months at the Casa Palomita
October 29, 2012
I hope we will be able to return to Oaxaca next year. If so, we would be delighted to stay at your house again. Thank you so much for the WONDERFUL house. We had an excellent time and made many friends. What a great neighborhood! Many, many thanks. The sense of peace and beauty you have created in that house infused us and we will have loving memories.

Completely perfect
September 30, 2012
The house is beautiful, calm and quiet and easy walk to all of historic "downtown" Oaxaca. Jorge is marvelous. I really appreciated the information book Maria put together and took three great excursions with Don Vidal. We visited San Bartolo Coyotepec and met with a family that makes black pottery and visited the museum, we toured a wood working business in San Martin Tilcajete, and found a woman who embroiders dresses in a rural area whose name I'm afraid I forget. I also did a tour of microentrepreneurs (listed in Maria's info) and it was fascinating. Definitely more than worth the $50 cost -- all of which goes to finance loans. I whole-heartedly recommend Casa Palomita and Maria, who was amazingly flexible with my changing schedules.
Owner's reply:
Thank you Kate for taking the time to write a review of your stay at Casa Palomita. We hope you return and return. Much of what you found on our "What's Nearby" page were recommendations left by our family of guests. I hope someday myself to take advantage of all their recommendations! Best, Maria

Lovely home is everything we hoped it would be
July 13, 2012
I wanted to tell you how much we loved your beautiful home! It was everything we hoped it would be--convenient and quiet location, nice neighborhood, lovely home with everything one could need. We all enjoyed the hammock and did some serious reading and relaxing in it. We walked back and forth to the zocalo and Santo Domingo area via Los Arquitos, and we loved that walk. We went to the pastry shop across from the hospital every day (they probably miss us!). The cooking class at Casa Crespo was fun, educational and delicious, so I highly recommend that. We had dinner at La Casa de Abuela restaurant on the zocalo and were deligted with listening to the marimba music and watching the dancers. Otherwise, we followed other guests (and your) recommendations, eating twice at Quinque, which we really enjoyed. We had taken Wayak from Mex City to Oaxaca, but it wasn't as comfortable as the ADO bus that we took from Oaxaca to Puebla. We took a taxi to Monte Alban, which we all loved even more than Teotihuacan--it is so, so beautiful! the taxi was definitely the way to go--only 100 pesos each way and ultraconvenient. As I said to Jorge, we all definitely want to return to Casa Palomita!
Owner's reply:
Thank you for taking the time to share your kind words Moira about your stay at Casa Palomita. Nothing makes me and Jorge happier than to see our guests enjoy their stay, be relaxed, and fall in love with Oaxaca at the same time. Paloma (Palomita being the diminutive) is my daughter's name and Jorge named the house Casa Palomita because he knew I kind of have a thing for doves. The dove gargoyles on the house were a gift from the builder. We welcome your return! Thanks again, Maria

Idyllic place to stay in Oaxaca
May 31, 2012
We spent a wonderful two months in this charming house that is surely the best place to stay for a holiday in Oaxaca. It is a beautiful house in a quiet peaceful neighbourhood within easy walking distance of the city centre and is extremely well equipped with top quality fixtures, fittings and finishes throughout. The owner was very helpful and a delight to deal with. You really can't get any better than this.

A perfect haven
March 5, 2012
Casa Palomita's owner was totally accommodating, her on-site manager was delightful and helpful, her Oaxaca tips were useful and used, and the lovely house is at a wonderful location. It is close enough to the zocalo and various sights for walking, yet in an area that is quiet, peaceful and close to a little local market. We highly recommend it (but not so vigorously that there's never space for us again). We would return in a moment. TR and JR

truly delightful
September 13, 2011
Jorge was truly delightful. A serious, scholarly, funny, responsible fellow. He made us feel safe and informed. He was a godsend. I don't really know how to improve on your lovely house. It was beautiful. I'm sure you will put up more art in time. Perhaps a reading light for both sides of all the beds would be nice. It was perfectly equipped. Really. Nothing wanting. Your travel advice was perfect. I used it all. We did find a great little place on Macedonia Alcala (1.5 blocks north of Ninos Heroes) right above the hospital. Can't remember the name. It was tiny, on the east side of the street. Tortillas being made right at the entrance. Quesillo and squash blossom quesadillas were divine. The coffee house on the NW corner of Jose Lopez Alavez and Santo Tomas (1block south, 1 block west and another block south of Casa Palomita) was lovely also. Thank you Maria for a memorable two week vacation.

A Beautiful Place to Stay in Oaxaca
July 8, 2011
Casa Palomita is an excellent place to stay in Oaxaca. The house is very well-appointed -- especially the kitchen, which has beautiful pots and pans, dishes and appliances. The house is on a very quiet street close to the historical center, but also within a few blocks of some great little restaurants where you can get delicious fresh juices, handmade tortillas, memelitas, empanadas and so forth. Jorge is a lovely person; you will share a common entrance with him, but he is both friendly and respectful of the privacy of guests. He has his own separate couryard, so the outdoor space you see in the photograph is yours to enjoy. There is a hammock as well as a patio table with umbrella and chairs on the patio, not yet featured in these photos. I would definitely return to Casa Palomita -- in fact, looking at these photos again makes me want to return right away!

Lovely....what more can I say? The booking process was quite simple - even from the UK and involving bank drafts and stuff, but all went smoothly. The house is in a quiet location, but only 10 or 15 minutes walk into the very heart of the tourist area of Oaxaca. Jorge was very helpful, and everything about the house was charming and finished to a high standard. We thoroughly enjoyed out week here...thanks!

Palomita heaven
April 6, 2011
My friend Maria has created a Palomita heaven. Casa Palomita (Little Dove) is so appropriately named. There is a sweetness and a lovely spirit that is felt throughout the house. When you come into the patio, you are met by a beautifully tiled fountain, native plants, and clay dove gargoyles. The living room and kitchen are full of light, the bedrooms are spacious, with very comfortable beds. The kictchen is fully equipped with all the amenities to cook gourmet meals. Or you can just sip your coffee at the counter as the morning light shines through. I have stayed at many wonderful places in Oaxaca over the years. Casa Palomita is now at the top of the list.

Pink perfection in Oaxaca
April 5, 2011
I am part of a Norwegian group of four students that arrived at Casa Palomita in Oaxaca the 10th of February 2011. We found out about Casa Palomita through Oaxaca Learning Center, and booked the house from Norway a couple of months before arriving. When we arrived, housekeeper Jorge greeted us at the door and showed us around the house, which we imidately fell in love with. Jorge became a good friend during our stay and had both Spanish lessons with us and took us to markets and other unforgetable sights in Oaxaca. After a month's stay in Casa Palomita, I feel confident to highly recommend this lovely house to people traveling to Oaxaca. It's located in the neighborhood of Xochimilco, situated ten, or so, blocks from el Zócalo, the center of the city. We were the second guests to stay in Palomita, and as the place is quite new, a few basic things were missing upon our arrival. The beginning of our stay was characterized by having workers there most of the daytime, but we were there to do work anyway, thus we weren't too bothered by this at all. Before we left, the house was more or less completed, and we were very sad to leave the house. We loved staying there, and we all miss the pink walls, the helpful neighbor and the beautiful city of Oaxaca. Going back someday!!
