THINGS TO DO
CUDDLE WITH A BEAR.
SLEEP OVERNIGHT AT (THE AMAZING) WILD ANIMAL PARK- Roar & Snore offers a variety of themed nights to choose from: Adults-only Nights for those 21 and up begin with hors d'oeuvres and the opportunity to purchase cocktails while partying with the lions at Kilmia Point. Then its one big overnight lovefest with the wild animals. They even have upgraded tents for fussy camping whiners.
RENT A KAYAK OR BOAT -or sign up for an Outrigger or Whale Watching Expedition: 256 Harbor Dr. in Oceanside
RENT A VESPA - and even get an expresso in their coffee bar while you wait. Half day only 40.00. vespaofoceanside
LEARN TO SURF - at Surf Camp. Much more interesting than those stuffy camps of your childhood....this one is about survival with an emphasis on marine biology and coastal ecology. Linda Bensons Surf School at Moonlight Beach - just down the 101 in Encinitas:
CYCLE the San Luis Rey River Trail. You can pick up at Coast Highway and Neptune Dr. and follow the path of the San Luis Rey River for 8 miles each way. Or, grab a couple friends and Cycle down the Oceanside Strand and around the Harbor. Stop at watering holes on the way, but be sure you have your bike light in the “on” position on the way home after dark or the Strand Patrol will nail you. Bikes can be rented anywhere.
OUTDOOR FARMERS MARKETS The place to go for inexpensive and fresh fruits and vegetables for your gourmet dinners. Wednesday and Saturday 2:00 to 5:00 on Roosevelt in downtown Carlsbad. The Sunset Farmers Market in downtown Oceanside by the pier in a Must. Really unique food items, live music and festivities for all while you select from choice produce. Every Thursday evening from 5 to 9 pm.
ANTIQUE STORES - STATE STREET in Carlsbad Village. Or take a country drive to Escondido or Julian, where you can find great buys and interesting pieces for great prices.
HAPPY HOUR CRUISE: AZURE SEAS
What is better then watching the sun set on the Pacific Ocean? This two-hour cruise offers beautiful scenery, a magnificent sunset and complimentary hors d'oeuvres.
Plus, its just 40.00 which is a lot less work than flirting with all the boat owners who have already seen all the right moves and trust me on this -are not interested in taking you anywhere. AZURE SEAS Dock 1 at The Harbor in Oceanside
OCEANSIDE MUSEUM OF ART: If not in the mood to jump on the Coaster to visit any one of our magnificent San Diego cultural parks and museums like Balboa Park, check out the OCM on Pier Way in Oceanside.
If you are lucky enough to get in, JAZZ AT THE MUSEUM offers Cocktails, Appetizers, (compliments of 333) and music from artists like Dave Patrone for just 25.00 for Non Members. ART AFTER DARK is another all time favorite. 704 Pier View Way in Oceanside.
WINE TASTING - Our lovely Temecula Wine Country offers beautiful scenery and some great little vintages.
WILSON CREEK gets my votes for Best Wine Tasting…
LUNCH at THORNTON WINERY, which offers a sunlit view of the fruit trees, with a carafe of wine always served with hot baked bread. Note: Their summer jazz concerts are pricey but worth it.
SPEND THE NIGHT: At SOUTH COAST WINERY where you can get a wonderful little Villa and enjoy a Hot Air Balloon ride the next day. .
WHILE IN TEMECULA: Check out OLD TOWN for antiques. Okay, this is killing me to let you in on this one, cuz some of my best Interior Design finds have been found there so please lets just keep some of this info for ourselves or it won’t be a secret anymore. Here goes: Across the River from Front Street is GRANNYS ATTIC – complete with all the fun nooks and crannies that your own Grandmaw use to have in her own attic. One of a kind pieces that, with just a little imagination can help you create a whole room into something special. Don’t forget to check out the courtyard, where the cool vintage patio pieces are wearing genuine moss. Bring your SUV and trailer – and remember not to start a conversation with the cowboy slouching near the door. He isn’t real.
GLEN IVY HOT SPRINGS SPA - A little further north on the 15 from the Wine Country is this delightful day spa. For less than 50 bucks you get to spend the entire day relishing in a tropical wonderland of "Its All About Me" indulgement. Check out the underground caverns and discover a new layer of skin after scouring the mud off your sun-worn body in the famous mud baths. Get a massage for no other reason than to have one of their very handsome young boys lead you back to a secluded hut for a guilt-free rendezvous. Some say this spa and its healing waters were founded by The Mafia - I say it was founded by the gods of bliss.
CATALINA ISLAND - is unsurpassed in natural beauty, a true island oasis just off the coast of Southern California. Calm clear waters in a quaint Mediterranean like setting manages to be both relaxing and adventurous, which makes for the ideal romantic setting to fall in love – for a few days anyway. From the property, head North on the 5 about 20 minutes until you get to Dana Point - and pick up one of the cruise ships to the island. Venture out to the back country with a picnic lunch for a serious uphill hike, where in just under 3 miles, you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of this magical aqua island and it’s studded sails.
Great whale watching can be had at the same time as your cruise, but be forewarned that the last boat out is typically filled with party animals who have had one too many margaritas, and the happiest one, (usually the heaviest one in the crowd) can somehow find a way to slip down the galley and onto your lap before you’re halfway back to Dana Point.
Stay at the AURORA HOTEL instead and ask for a third floor room. Then, go play kissy face on the roof top deck and witness one of the most amazing views on the planet.
FOUR SEASONS HOTEL - Just tilt your nose up a little and ACT like you belong there! (it helps to be blonde - and skinny) Also known for its World Class golf courses. O.K, so you may have to pay for THAT privilege.
BEST HIKE: BATIQUITOS LAGOON – while running away from the Four Seasons staff member who is totally on to you – head down the canyon toward the lagoon that runs behind the hotel. Or, for a more proper arrival - park at one of two designated parking lots on Batiquitos Drive in Carlsbad. This park loops around and offers majestic views of the lagoon, with the intoxicating scent of deciduous plants like lavender and sage.
LA COSTA RESORT is easily my personal favorite serenity spot. Purchase a massage and you get to play Queen for the day while enjoying all the amenities. The grounds are beautiful especially at night. Try the Blue Fire Grill for Happy Hour. lacostadotcom
BEST OUTLET ANYWHERE IN THE PLANET
THE CARLSBAD COMPANY STORES
Check out Bellefleur Restaurant for a great burger and extra crispy fries at lunch. Happy Hour Friday brings some pretty sensational martinis where a bartender named Girth will make you forget about that cute dress, which, in a weak moment reminiscent of the nineties: you put on hold at BCBG. Try to ignore the eternal 2010 voice that keeps coming back to haunt you with: “Is it a Need or a Want?”
BEST WAY TO TOOL AROUND TOWN:
The Coaster.....no traffic lights, comfy seats, and a view of the coast all the way to your destination for just a few bucks each way. You can leave your car and pick up at any village exit on the 5 for no charge. Great way to see a Charger game!
WHILE YOU'RE DOWNTOWN: The Gas Lamp Quarter is easily the hottest spot in San Diego for nightlife. You single people should check out the W Hotel for a great happy hour on the Roof Top Beach. Since there are too many great dining places to choose from, it’s best to graze your way down 4th, 5th, and 6th Street for appetizers, entrees, and desserts.
BEST JAZZ STATION: 98.1 (kifm) will give you continuous updates on San Diego's famous jazz concerts. Also, this summer you will find them sponsoring some great entertainment on Oceanside's own pier. Tough to find a better venue than our own Pacific Ocean as a backdrop.
BEST CONCERN VENUE: The Oceanside Ampitheater at The Pier.
FOR WEEKLY ENTERTAINMENT: The Belly Up in Solana Beach at the Design District.
BEST BREAKFAST:
BEACHBREAK CAFÉ in OCEANSIDE:
Go hungry and try a Jalapeno Scramble and the Banana Crunch French Toast. These guys have been servin’ it up fresh for us every morning for years, and they have got the breakfast thing DOWN – (even though the banks don’t seem to think so) So, hey, we’ll just continue boycotting Denny’s and all other Corporate Boxes until we see the Beach Break expansion approved. Thanks for your efforts Gary and Zel.
THE NAKED CAFÉ:
Another great breakfast spot in Carlsbad and a new location in Encinitas. Love the Fairy Dust Chai Tea Latte. They also do a mean jalapeno scramble! Ask for Nathan and he’ll make sure you get the perfect viewing spot even through on the way to your table, you may be trippin’ over children and their doting Carlsbad parents who don’t mind paying 10 bucks for Oatmeal.
QUICK BITE: Buckaneer Beach Club is a few yards away from Seaview Villa, across from Buckaneer Beach where Old Surfer Dudes are cookin’ up excellent fresh Ahi sandwiches, Breakfast Burritos and Fish Tacos.
Some of the best pancakes anywhere since the Old Guys are also retired firemen who stand for hours gazing at the next wave with nary a surfboard in sight. Open by Chance but one worth taking.
HILL STREET COFFEE SHOP 524 Coast Hwy
Organic healthy fare and a great little courtyard setting in an old Victorian house.
In the same setting, y and a better than average Sushi restaurant.
BEST LATTE: THE PIERVIEW WAY COFFEE SHOP:
I like to cruise down the beach - jog down the pier and cross back over to this coffee shop for a egg and cheese sandwich on fresh ciabatta bread. Just remember that your eggs always come scrambled in Southern California. (They will look at you weird if you ask to have them fried)
BEST HANG OUT COFFEE SHOP:
PANNIKINS in Encinitas: Tucked away in a Charming Yellow Victorian House on the 101. Grab a paper to hide behind as you take notes on the best of the Southern Cal culture while surfers, exec, and Techies mingle with their overly well-behaved dogs.
BEST COFFEE SHOP FOOD and ENVIRONMENT
VINAKAS CAFÉ in Carlsbad. Tropical themed in a funky eclectic style that warrants no real explanation. Starbucks tried to run them out a few years ago, by planting a store in the same plaza at Carlsbad Blvd. and Carlsbad Village Dr, but it worked out perfect cuz the Biker Geezers migrated to Starbucks and Vinaka’s gets to just keep doing what they do best. Grab a table over the central fountain and enjoy one of the best tuna fish sandwiches or Lox and Bagel dishes you’ll find anywhere at an affordable price. Plus, its nice not to have to divert your eyes when a pair of overly-snug biker shorts walk past you.
BEST NEW COFFEE SHOP:
THE CUP: My friends Karen and Dave will probably offer you a free cup of their secret blend of the world’s most exotic coffee, along with an aspirin for your hangover if you mention my name. Couches are brought out to the sidewalk for a view of the ocean while beach billionaires happily converse with cheerful deadbeats from the alleys who are poor but serene, cuz they knew what they were doing all the time and already have a place to lay their heads. (squatters rights) Occasional guitars and singing bring a joyful spirit of denial, as you are transported far from the reality of a crazy economy.
VIGILUCCIS Anything that says Vigiluccis on the Coast is going to be good. Check out their newest restaurant: Osteria, located on Mission in Oceanside. Great wine list and close enough to walk from Casa By The Sea. vigiluccisdotcom
BAJA LOBSTER AT THE HARBOR
Buckets of fresh lobster and marinated chicken and carne asada. Plus a great Caesar and Salsa Bar. You can once again dream about being a boat owner and then just as quickly remember the price of gas and go back to humbly eating your taco.
DOMINICS AT THE HARBOR Hole in the Wall GREAT Italian Restaurant. Fabulous pizza with out of this world crust. Dominic might just crack open one of his better Chiantis if you ask really nicely.
BEST HAUNTS ON COAST HWY 101:
The Panikin Restaurant in Leucadia: A Pre-Starbucks Funky Coffee House. Try the curry chicken salad on one of their fresh baked bagels.
THE SELF REALIZATION CENTER In Cardiff - just walk through the ornate iron gate and take in the magic of these serene gardens overlooking the Pacific. No charge to discover who you REALLY are - but donations accepted.
THE CEDROS DESIGN DISTRICT
Just behind the historical train station off Lomas Santa Fe and Coast Hwy. Gotta try the Mac and Cheese at the Zinc Cafe. Wonderful boutique shops and completely unaffordable design centers.
BEST CONSIGNMENT STORE
The classy women of DOUBLE TAKE have been dressing me up for last minute affairs for years. Start with your basics of trouser’s , jeans, and couture - quality dress apparel downstairs, and then wind your way up to the Attic for accessories and sometimes the perfect Italian shoe. Fun beads, necklaces sunglasses will complete your look and have you out the door in minutes – but not without the final approval of your fellow shoppers. Be prepared to dance when encouraged to do so. Double Take’s got you covered with 3 locations in Encinitas, Solana Beach, and my personal fave – the rockin’ Roosevelt location in Carlsbad.
BEST WELL KEPT SECRET GOURMET RESTAURANT:
THE WINE SELLER AND BRASSERIE: Lori and Gary, The Purveyors of this exquisite gem are my dear friends and will welcome you with open arms into this classy restaurant that serves, ‘To-Die-For’ culinary creations along with a wine list that continually receives the prestigious Wine Spectator Grand Award. The Flourless Chocolate Grand Marnier Cake will leave you breathless. Saturday Wine Tasting for just $12.50.
BEST OCEANVIEW RESTAURANT
The Beach House in Cardiff on 101:
Dine upstairs cuz you may get splashed on the lower level when the surf comes crashing over the rocks.
BEST MEXICAN FOOD
My choice is Las Olas in Carlsbad on Coast Hwy or across from The Beach House above. Try the Sour Cream Enchiladas with a fresh mango Margarita. Best Salsa too! WARNING: DO NOT DRINK MORE THAN 2 of the Infused Roasted Jalapeno and Pineapple Margaritas.
BEST MEXICAN PARTY PLACE
COYOTES - For good food and live bands- w/ cozy outdoor fire pits for great margarita conversations - Carlsbad Village
BEST FAST FOOD MEXICAN
We have more of these than other cities have McDonalds. I like Roberto’s on Oceanside Blvd and 101 and Juanita in Encinitas.
For the best bowl of Mexican Chicken Soup in the city, try La Especial Norte in Leucadia. Said by some to be the ONLY cure for the common cold.
BEST HAPPY HOUR
Calypso Café and its sister restaurant: Pappagallos for spicy south pacific fare and an excellent wine list. Located in Leucadia right before Encinitas. Blink and you might miss it.
BEST MARTINI AND OCEANSIDE RESTAURANT
333 CAFÉ AT THE PIER IN OCEANSIDE. Gotta love the gamble the Kohn guys took to bring a classy club and restaurant to the hauntingly beautiful – albeit lonely- Oceanside pier. It’s a smashing success with a fabulous happy hour, wonderful service, and unforgettable dinner experience.
BEST DATE PLACE:
Vigiluccis on State Street in Downtown Carlsbad. Tranquil and romantic. Also private enough that you can play footsies or something a little more daring.
BEST PIZZA
Again, our local Restaurateur, located in Leucadia near Calypso Café: vigiluccisdotcom. Gotta try the Four Cheese Pizza even if you are a Die-Hard Sauce person.
BEST SEAFOOD:
You can choose anyone of the expensive restaurants in town, but DINIS’ in Carlsbad brings in extraordinary cuts of fresh seafood at an affordable price. Join the Happy Hour crowd and you’ll get an amazing fresh fish taco – and sometimes an unwanted phone number-for just 2 bucks.
BEST BURGER
Roadhouse Grill: Next door to the Best Pizza guys above.
Guaranteed red meat fix for at least 3 days.
BEST CHEESESTEAK
I’ve never been to Philly – the ole King of Cheesesteaks town, but I do know a good sandwich, and THE CHEESTEAK GRILL is consistent every time with the kind of lean steak, grilled mushroom, and melted white cheese that will make a girls heart sing – and her protein level soar back to normal. I dare you to find a better Cheesesteak sandwich in Southern California.
Oceanside Blvd next to the Starbucks.
BEST BEACH WALK
Buckaneer Beach South to Carlsbad Village. If you count about 10 houses down after the citadel you can find the steps that take you right to Ocean drive, and into the heart of the village.
SECOND BEST BEACH WALK
The Seawall in Carlsbad. Park at the West end of Carlsbad Village Drive. A bit busier but fun to people watch. NOTE: For tourists who don’t get it – the line to get into the parking lot is just that – which means don’t be an Ass and drive in front of us in search of a place to park. Chill out with a fish taco and cold house brew at Harbor Fish Café.
BEST DRIVE UP THE COAST
Oceanside to San Clemente. Go to Del Mar Avenue for fabulous antique and boutique shops. Try the Blue Fire Grill for dinner. Check out the all day Farmers Market on Sundays. Have a Bloody Mary at the Fishermans Seafood Restaurant. Live a little and ask for The Spicy Bull.
BEST MONTH TO VISIT SAN DIEGO:
OCTOBER, NOVEMBER, DECEMBER: No crowds, beautiful sunsets, crisp mornings
BEST BOOKSTORE;
Barnes and Noble in Oceanside - across from Trader Joe's. Ask for a copy of the book: POPCORN POPPIN ON THE APRICOT TREE - By Faith Paulus – (No Relation)
GREENBACKS ARE NOT ACCEPTED FOR THIS SERVICE, HOWEVER LOCALS UNDERCOVER INC. WILL GRACIOUSLY ACCEPT TRADE AS GRATUITY FROM ESTABLISHMENTS NAMED ABOVE.

Thanks for the opportunity to stay at Seaview Villa! This is a beautiful home and I so enjoyed spending time here. Your rental agent, Andrea, was very sweet and helpful in providing me last minute accomodations when my original place fell through. Love reading your book, Popcorn Poppin On The Apricot Tree, and looking forward to finishing it so I may share it with my work friends.
Time to go...in a hurray (yes,Hurray!) to catch the sunset. Would'nt miss it for anything.
Peace, Lori,

Well sadly, we are off to our home in the East, but not without fondest memories of your "little jewel by the sea!" Private, yet the perfect location to walk to everything....the milkshakes at the pier were awesome! Angela and Mike Lokowski, Boston, MA
What a week! We especially enjoyed our beach walks to Carlsbad village in the evening for dinner, and the quaint little beach homes in this neighborhood are darling. We also enjoyed the short ride up the coast to San Clemente...another charming village. Thank you so much for your hospitality,
Trisha and Dave Fowler
