This estate was designed by architects Mead and Requa in 1919 for a very prominent family of Ojai who were among the founders of The Thacher School. Construction began in the early 1920's and was completed circa 1936. From their travels to Spain and Morocco, Mead and Requa imported many exotic design motifs which distinguished their architecture from that of their contemporaries. This 'Mediterannean spirit with Moorish influence' was the precursor to the 'Southern California Architecture' style which dominated San Diego during the 1920's. Making 'Elmirador' unique and historically significant.
'El Mirador is owned by fashion designer Sarah Dubler who was born and raised in Ojai. She has traveled extensively and worked for 15 years in Italy for prestigious Italian fashion designers. During which time she did extensive renovations on an Tuscan farmhouse built in the 1600's. In 2002, when Sarah purchased 'El Mirador' she decorated it with many of the art treasures she had acquired while living abroad.
Sarah's husband fashion/beauty and fine art photographer Douglas Dubler is from New York City and has been coming to Ojai for more than twenty years having discovered it when he had a studio in Los Angeles.
With their sophistication and love for beauty this rare piece of property has flourished. This has always been their preferred retreat.
