Casa Ostional (#44513)

Ostional, Guanacaste, Costa Rica

Description of the Ostional vacation home rental

"Casa Ostional" is a magnificent home which sits on top of a small mountain in what is know locally as Lora Hills. The perimeter is beautifully landscaped and the greater property is surrounded by a tropical jungle which is home to howler monkeys, dear, iguanas, kotimundi (raccoon family), a variety of birds, and others. The house is fully equipped and stocked with typical foods and beverages (including beer, wine, and liquor if desired) which are available at minimal cost per person.
The house has two large master suites with private bathrooms and a large loft area with a bathroom for additional guests. It also features a modern kitchen, and a large dinning and living room area with magnificent views of the Pacific. There are three porches with the main porch measuring approximately twenty feet by twelve feet.

Area Description

“Casa Ostional” is situated in the small town of Ostional which is approximately one and one-half hours southwest of the Liberia International Airport. Ostional is well known as one of the largest Olive Ridley Turtle nesting sites in the world and therefore is considered protected land. There is very little in the town itself which is really the best part about this area. Turtle season begins around August and goes through November with the best month to be 100% sure to see hatchlings in October. However, October is also the most difficult time to enter this area due to the high rivers on either side of Ostional. Ostional and the surrounding areas feature gorgeous beaches each with it's own unique personality - some for tranquil walks and hammocks and others with invigorating surf and hiking trails and lava flows. Some of the activities in the area include fishing, scuba diving and snorkeling, hiking, horseback riding, zip-linning, turtle and bird watching. If you plan on staying for more than a week, you may want to plan a trip to the Arenal Volcano and other National Parks.

I was with the owner when he bought this property. At the time I thought it was a mistake, man was I wrong! The design and layout of the house and property are even better then the excellent photographs on this site.
Luis and Rosario are both wonderful and helpful. Elias, who I have known for many years, is without doubt a true friend to all who he comes into contact with. I would highly recommend him as your guide.
The Ostional area is now my favorite area in all of Costa Rica. The only downside to staying at Casa Ostional is eventually you have to leave.

I have to say, from the arrival to the departure we had the best 7 days and Honeymoon we could ask for. From conception, we were both "concerned" about spending our honeymoon in Ostional. We both had heard of San Jose, CR, but never Ostional. However trusted friends promised us it would be perfect. We took their advice and it was the best decision we could have made regarding our honeymoon destination. We were greeted at the airport by Elias. He was a outstanding tour guide that was extremely knowledgeable on all of Costa Rica and we recommend using him. He spoke great English, put up with my elementary Spanish, and had a great sense of humor.

We arrived at the vacation home in Ostional and were greeted by Luis and Rosario, the caretaker and cook for the home. They were warm and friendly and we immediately felt as though there goal was to make us feel as
comfortable as they could. Goal Achieved by Luis and Rosario with high marks! We had 3 meals a day for the week. I am a big fan of great service, but a fanatic for "Personalized Great Service"! Here's an example of what I mean by personalized great service. Our 1st night we had fish and rice and beans and salad. In CR, salad dressing is not regularly used. So my wife whipped up a homemade vinaigrette using olive oil, salt and pepper and fresh limes. The next day we had chicken Rice and beans and salad for dinner and without requesting salad dressing, vinaigrette was on the table waiting for
us just like my wife made it the day before! We were impressed and that was the way the entire week went. We made our bed the first night and removed the blanket. The next 5 nights, the house staff made the bed without the
blanket!

They staff was so kind and courteous to us, we actually cooked an American meal for them one night!

The house is also fantastic. Open, spacious, SAFE and gated. We loved the large showers, IPOD compatible speakers, books to read, a backyard that you could spend 1/2 day tour and sight seeing.

It's a destination that we will definitely revisit and stay at this home using Elias, Rosa and Luis. They were a part of a important time in our life and they made it unforgettable!

What a holiday! Pictures or a summary cannot possibly do it justice. From the breathtakingly beautiful sunsets over the Pacific Ocean viewed from your balcony (which we tried never to miss) to the exotic flora and fauna we got to experience hands-on in our own back yard! An armadillo visited the yard every day during our first week stay, which thrilled los ninos! We also got to observe a multitude of the most interesting insects and colorful butterflies. When Luis and Rosario (I get choked up thinking about them) saw our interest in animals, they went out of their way to lead us to congos that were close by and to point out different birds, insects, lizards, etc.!! They even took us down to the farm to show us newborn puppies, piglets and baby chicks.

About the food! Luis and Rosario went above and beyond their duties to accommodate our needs and make breakfast, lunch and supper exciting and an experience in itself. On top of the fresh and tasty Costa Rican food that they served us, they also prepared pasta, steak and potatoes, hamburgers and pancakes (for the boys) and we enjoyed a BBQ on our last night! I don't have the words to describe how this couple touched our hearts.

About our activities! We visited ALL the beaches in the area, including Samara. All of them were unique and beautiful! Each one had its own character and flavor. Playa Pelada was our favorite as only a few footprints could be seen across the white sand beach and the boogyboarding there was great! (And, shelling as well.) At Playa Guiones we took surfing lessons and in Nosara we went on the Miss Sky canopy tour.

Luis set up horseback riding for us... we woke up, had breakfast, and mounted horses minutes later at the gate. Unbelievable! On another day we were inquiring about directions to Nosara River for fishing. Luis didn't give us directions... he led us there! He also picked up some shiners from his amigo for bait. We enjoyed it so much that we went again, and this time Rosario came along and showed us how to fish with traditional reels. We bought a few reels in Nosara and fished for the rest of the day.

Thank you for opening up your home to us and providing us with the opportunity to experience a dream for a holiday. I know soon our memories of Costa Rica will fade but the difference that Luis and Rosario made in our lives and the memory of them will never disappear!

Sincerely,
Ken, Sherry, Brendan and Tanner

"Pura Vida" - This common greeting response in Costa Rica truly reflects what it is like to be at Casa Ostional: Pure Life.

Wake up to sun light and the sounds of howler monkeys...

Once awake - and still lying in bed - look past your toes and see the Pacific Ocean. Yup - that's the view...

And then the day gets rolling with as much or as little of what you may want to do. Pristine beaches, horse-back riding, zip lines, deep-sea fishing... or just sitting at the porch with an Imperial (local beer) in hand.

It just rocks.

This phenomenal experience was not only possible because of the location, design and openness of the house itself, but also by the local friends who so graciously enriched us during our stay.

Rosario and Luis - amazing chefs, phenomenal property care-takers and incredible people. A joy to be around.

Elias - a tremendous guide, driver and newfound friend. As Chris and Spencer write in their review, he is the ultimate connection to a fun, affordable, and grass-roots Costa Rican travel experience.

Overall, we cannot say enough great things about Casa Ostional, about the overall environment and culture, and about the people who took such great care of us while we were experiencing one of the best trips yet.

And for the record: We miss Panchito too.

Enjoy your time at Casa Ostional! There are few places like it in this world...

It was a great vacation. We could do as little or much as we wanted. It was wonderful having all of our meals and cleaning taken care of. Elias took us to the best beaches and we especially enjoyed soaring through the canopy.
I highly recommend this house!

In preparing to write this review, we decided to first
read the journal we kept while visiting Casa
Ostional. What we found most interesting was the
very first thing we wrote our first night home:

We miss Ponchito.

When you visit Casa Ostional, you will understand
what we mean. You will also understand why your
vacation will feel more like a home away from home
rather than a vacation destination. The relaxed
atmosphere of Casa Ostional, from the -every room
has a view- layout of the house to the staff to the
sounds of the nearby howler monkeys, your body
and soul start to feel like they are in your favorite
easy chair.

Luis and Rosario will prepare your meals with care
and provide you with local flavor, not by design, but
because they ARE local flavor. A charming young
couple that lives in the adjacent guesthouse, they
will make you delicious meals daily, along with
fresh mango, papaya and pineapple.

And if you decide to hire Elias, a wonderful guide
that we hired for the entire week (highly
recommended!), he will drive you to and fro to as
many or as few nearby destinations as you want to
busy yourself with. It was a godsend to have
someone who could navigate the roads, set up
excursions (and get you best pricing), and have
someone who is steeped in the cultural side of
Costa Rica. He also knows the best beaches and
local restaurants to check out. Unless you are well
versed in how to get around in a Central American
country and driving on roads that are only roads in
the academic sense, hire Elias. You will get so
much more out of your time in Costa Rica.
Chartering a fishing boat, horse back riding, and an
exciting canopy tour were just some of the outings
Elias set up for us.

So whether you like to be -go go go - on your
vacations or you prefer to relax and just -sit sit sit -
Casa Ostional gives you ample opportunities. The
beauty and atmosphere just can not be topped!

Also, Casa Ostional is a great place to get engaged.
Just ask us about it!

Pura Vida!

We had an amazing time at your house in Ostional! Your Staff was wonderful
and exceeded our expectations for service and delicious meals. Can't say
enough about your guide Elias. He stayed with us the entire time and was a
great companion, educator, advisor, entertainer, and always made us feel
very safe. He took us on one amazing adventure after another. We had an
action packed week of surfing the best waves I've ever seen, watched dozens
of giant sea turtles nesting, went horseback riding in the mountains overlooking
the ocean and through the jungle along rivers with giant trees full of
howler monkeys, beautiful birds and iguanas, took an off shore fishing trip where we had close contact with a giant whale with 2 calves, attended a local rodeo &
bull fight, took long off road trip to see the countryside and to visit
waterfalls and swimming holes. We even had time to relax on the beach and
on the great front deck of the house a little while. We actually had a
whale sighting from the deck! Needless to say we returned from our daily
adventures tired and hungry to the comforts of home and Rosario's spread of
fantastic local food and drink. I never knew I could eat so many mangoes and avocados!
We look forward to our next visit and highly recommend these accommodations
and the guide service to anyone who wants a REAL Costa Rica experience.

Wow! Where do you start when describing this incredible place?! The house and its surroundings are breathtaking. The photos are good but nothing compared to the real thing. Fall asleep to the winds and noises of the jungle and wake to the beautiful sunshine over the Pacific Ocean. The hospitality provided by the Luis and Rosario was perfect. Their meals served a taste of local flavor and were delicious. They even went out of their way to accommodate my vegetarian diet.

The daily activities organized by Elias were fascinating glimpses into the local culture and wildlife. The people, the animals, the vegetation, the beaches, the country, the culture - he knew it all and was so happy to share his love of everything with anyone that wanted to listen. Heck, he even tried to teach me Spanish. We ventured with Elias to five or six incredible beaches, rode horses, fished, shopped and hiked till we dropped. I don't have a favorite activity because they were all great experiences. I'd go back in a heartbeat and will definitely plan to do so!

Our vacation in Ostional Costa Rica could not have been more relaxing and enjoyable. Having this architectural marvel as headquarters for embarking on excursions: fishing; surfing; hiking; bull-fighting and shopping was phenomenal. Each morning, we awoke slowly to distant chants of howler monkeys accompanied by a serenading of song-birds. Once risen, we enjoyed mornings on the porch sipping coffee and eating lavish meals prepared by the house's keepers/staff. WE WILL BE BACK!!!

Jeanne and I had a most enjoyable stay at Casa Ostional, high on a mountainside with a breathtaking view overlooking the warm Pacific Ocean. We were greatly honored to be the first guests at this unique home! The house is fully equipped with all that you need. The warmth of the furnishings and stunning cabinetry of local woods added to the comfort of our stay.
A wonderful retreat for peace and solitude yet close to several good restaurants and beautiful beaches. We thoroughly enjoyed exploring this fascinating part of Costa Rica with Casa Ostional as our base.
Thank you Michael for sharing your piece of paradise with us.
