About an hour north of Los Angeles, Ventura County looks out on the expansive Pacific Ocean. Initially settled by Chumash Indians, the region was discovered by Portuguese and Spanish adventurers in the mid-16th century. Not long thereafter, Spain began to construct missions along the coast, and San Buenaventura (Ventura's original, official name) was established in 1782. Small communities and sprawling ranches grew around it, giving rise to the eventual town. In the 19th century, California saw an influx of settlers, and Ventura County became an agricultural capital, a title it holds yet today. In fact, the town of Oxnard derived its name from brothers who built a factory there to process sugar beets, a profitable early crop. Thanks to fertile lands and abundant rainfall, the area now serves as a top producer of strawberries, lima beans, lemons, and celery. The oil industry and the military also rank as major employers, along with electronics and tourism. Throughout its periods of growth, Ventura County has had the foresight to maintain its communities' small-town charm, as well as their history. Naturally, the coast is a perpetual draw, and area beaches are frequented by residents and visitors alike. Off the coast, the Channel Islands are a favorite of outdoor enthusiasts as well. While you're around, you'll definitely want to visit San Buenaventura Mission, Ventura Harbor, and Ventura's City Hall, not to mention Carnegie Art Museum and Heritage Square in Oxnard. They're just brief indication of the all-American appeal that brings folks to the county for business, for pleasure, and for fun.

Overall enjoyed our stay, September 5, 2009
By Adam & Jeanette Rorex (West Virginia USA)
Overall I would say it was as the ad said, a charming beach house. The house was very well kept and clean, the furniture and appliances worked wonderfully. We loved the outdoor patio and jacuzzi. The kitchen had everything that we needed for a week stay. It was great that they had beach toys, kid toys, videos and a pack and play there ready for us to use. The landlord was very nice to deal with and responded very promptly to all of our questions. The beach there was wonderful--not crowded at all, a lot of the times we were the only ones swimming. We unfortunately were visiting during a "warm spell" so the lack of air conditioning made it a bit uncomfortable--we were unable to have our son sleep upstairs as planned due to it being so hot. We had all of the windows open and the small fans that were provided, but it was still very warm and stuffy in the loft. So we would recommend going during a cooler time in the season. The walk to the beach wasn't bad--or you could even drive and park there if you had lots of beach equipment (which we did). We have a four year old and a 17 month old. The stairs to the kids loft were a bit steep for kids and we had to constantly watch them in that area. The throw rugs were somewhat of a tripping hazard for the 17 month old, but we understand why they were needed (due to the type of floor and sand). Overall we would stay there again, during a cooler season and when our kids are a little older and less likely to trip/fall.

 Awesome Retreat, August 26, 2009
By Liz Culpepper (Altadena, CA)
The cottage is cozy and charming and feels as though it belongs in a good novel. Our family enjoyed many peaceful and joyful moments there. The cottage is classically decorated in a relaxed style and makes you feel immediately comfortable when you arrive - like walking into a good friend's house. It has everything you'd need, which allows for a stressfree (key for parents) vacation. We enjoyed the beach, kayaking in the harbor and cruising bikes around the neighborhood. My son loved sleeping upstairs with the sound of the ocean and a soft breeze coming through his window every night. I enjoyed having such an extensive children's library of books to read with him. It was also nice that he had his own little hide-away upstairs because it allowed the grown-ups more space to stay up late and enjoy watching movies, a nice fire with a good bottle of wine, or a dip in the jacuzzi. This cottage makes kids and grown ups happy - it is an ideal vacation spot that we look forward to returning to.

The house was fabulous and it was perfect for our vacation needs. However, Coldwell Property Mgmt should really invest in Customer Service training for their staff. They do not do a good job of explaining their policy and procedures and I found them to be quite difficult and unfriendly on the phone. I will look for a property that uses someone other than Coldwell next time.

Our whole family loved staying at this charming beach bungalow! Perhaps it was the magical kids' loft bedroom, fully stocked with toys and books, or maybe it was the lovely hot tub or just the endless beach...for whatever reason, our 3 children still reminisce about our Oxnard trip, and they can't wait to return for another visit!

Great family get away, August 24, 2008
By Jan (Mesa, AZ USA)
The house was just as advertised, and a great place for a family get away. The proximity to the beach was great, and of course the weather was unbeatable so we got a lot of use out of the great deck.

 Lovely visit, August 18, 2008
By Sarah (Riverside, CA)
The house was just as promised. We had a wonderful, restful week. The children enjoyed the provided toys and there was an excellent selection of movies. We will definitely consider renting this house again.
