About an hour north of Los Angeles, Ventura County looks out on the expansive Pacific Ocean. Initially settled by Chumash Indians, the region was discovered by Portuguese and Spanish adventurers in the mid-16th century. Not long thereafter, Spain began to construct missions along the coast, and San Buenaventura (Ventura's original, official name) was established in 1782. Small communities and sprawling ranches grew around it, giving rise to the eventual town. In the 19th century, California saw an influx of settlers, and Ventura County became an agricultural capital, a title it holds yet today. In fact, the town of Oxnard derived its name from brothers who built a factory there to process sugar beets, a profitable early crop. Thanks to fertile lands and abundant rainfall, the area now serves as a top producer of strawberries, lima beans, lemons, and celery. The oil industry and the military also rank as major employers, along with electronics and tourism. Throughout its periods of growth, Ventura County has had the foresight to maintain its communities' small-town charm, as well as their history. Naturally, the coast is a perpetual draw, and area beaches are frequented by residents and visitors alike. Off the coast, the Channel Islands are a favorite of outdoor enthusiasts as well. While you're around, you'll definitely want to visit San Buenaventura Mission, Ventura Harbor, and Ventura's City Hall, not to mention Carnegie Art Museum and Heritage Square in Oxnard. They're just brief indication of the all-American appeal that brings folks to the county for business, for pleasure, and for fun.

New Rich Person Summer Spot: Oxnard, the Montauk of LA
Friday, June 29, 2012, by Adrian Glick Kudler

The Hollywood Reporter declares that $70,000 a month Malibu rentals are fine and all, but the cool kids (you know, like Dave Grohl and...Pat Sajak) are now heading up the coast to Oxnard. Oxnard! Here's a little New Yorkist explainer from Keller Williams real estate agent Susan Blau: "If this were back east, Oxnard would be Montauk and Malibu would be East Hampton." THR says Oxnard is great because the beaches are relatively wide, it's cheaper than "more well-known communities" (one agent says "a stunning home" comes in at $2.5 to $3 million), and it's pretty under the radar and therefore not packed. So there's no Nobu, but, as one agent puts it: "you are not going to run into your boss, or someone who is going to pitch something to you." (On the other hand, the LA-aping street names might confuse the hell out of you.)
As for what you can get, real estate wise: "The housing stock, all on typically narrow 20- to 30-foot-wide lots, ranges from midcentury A-frame surf shacks (right now, there's a $2.3 million listing at 4161 Ocean Drive) to contemporary spreads (a $2.9 million residence on Ocean Drive put on the block by Warner Bros. executive vp/CFO Edward A. Romano)."

In-the-know industry-types are heading an hour up the coast from Malibu to Ventura County's quieter beach scene, the Montauk of SoCal.
As the second-home summer season hits high gear and Malibu begins to yet again resemble a zoo, savvy industry players eager to skip the scene but keep the sunscreen are heading a bit farther up the coast to the beaches of Oxnard in Ventura County, on the way to Santa Barbara. Fox Filmed Entertainment co-chief Jim Gianopulos has a place there, along with the likes of Dave Grohl, Pat Sajak and A-list attorney Warren Dern.
"It's fantastic, quiet, beautiful," says Shelley Browning, CEO of management firm Magnolia Entertainment. She and husband Ken, a top entertainment lawyer, purchased in the area -- which is an hour north of Los Angeles -- after looking seriously at several properties on Malibu's Carbon Beach. "Here, you have none of the nonsense of other beach towns -- the noise and traffic and parking issues and headaches." As Keller Williams real estate agent Susan Blau puts it: "If this were back east, Oxnard would be Montauk and Malibu would be East Hampton."

The neighboring stretches of the Oxnard coast -- from north to south are Mandalay Shores, Hollywood Beach and Silver Strand -- long have been a favorite of those in the business: from The Sheik, starring Rudolph Valentino, being shot on its dunes to Clark Gable and Carole Lombard famously sharing a quaint wooden bungalow in the neighborhood. Even Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall were rumored to have kept a beachfront love nest there.
Prime Oxnard oceanfront property lures buyers for three reasons. First, the wide-for-the-region sandy beaches. Second, the value relative to more well-known communities. And third, the sparsely populated shore remains mostly under the radar and off the cosmopolitan grid. Unlike Malibu, there are no chichi boutiques or hot restaurants.
The housing stock, all on typically narrow 20- to 30-foot-wide lots, ranges from midcentury A-frame surf shacks (right now, there's a $2.3 million listing at 4161 Ocean Drive) to contemporary spreads (a $2.9 million residence on Ocean Drive put on the block by Warner Bros. executive vp/CFO Edward A. STORY: Ryan Seacrest Buying Ellen DeGeneres' Beverly Hills Estate
"It's the last undiscovered, or at least underappreciated, beach area along the Southern California coast," says hotel designer Darrell Schmitt (The Peninsula Beverly Hills), who has a house on Hollywood Beach. Adds Ariel Palmieri of Coldwell Banker: "You can buy a stunning home in Oxnard for $2.5 million to $3 million versus $8 million to $10 million in Malibu. Plus, you are not going to run into your boss, or someone who is going to pitch something to you. You can be totally incognito. Yet at the same time it's very accessible: You can rise early on a Monday morning and still get into work back in L.A. if you want to."
According to RE/MAX agent Gary Cuoco, oceanfront prices are down 35 percent from their peak of several years ago, but are holding. "Right now," he says, "people are picking up some amazing value on the sand."

the owner makes the difference
December 1, 2013
We submitted requests for many VRBO properties to stay over Thanksgiving this year. It quickly became apparent that there is a pronounced difference in property owners and their attitudes. Most owners were slow in responding, somewhat rude in their approach. We had one acceptance that later cancelled for some vague reason. Deborah was great. Her property was great. The experience was great. Not all owners care as much about their prospective clients or give them the attention that they probably should expect. I will recommend working with Deborah, and I have a list of 10+ (one in particular) who I will suggest that my friends avoid.
Silverstrand Beach Cottage
October 8, 2013
Hi! My son and I loved the cottage. Within less than a minute, we were walking on the beach. Surfers rode massive waves mostly in the mornings but one day the wind and the surf must have been of optimal conditions because they were riding most of the day. I think that was because of the Santa Ana winds! It was windy!! Even with that been stated, the beach was well below 'packed'! Most days after 11am, we shared the beach with practically no one! We were there for a boxing tournament so our days were free. The surfers were not an issue. They were quiet and considerate. Parking was never an issue the week we were there. A spot in front of the house was provided and another was always available. In fact, two small cars could easily fit on the property. The cottage itself was cozy! It was perfect! I gave my son the king sized bedroom. I slept in the queen sized bedroom. The one full bathroom worked for us. And even if there were times that we needed to use the bathroom at the same time, the half bath upstairs was available. The kitchen was fully stocked of equipment and small appliances to make our meals. Buying food was our only requirement. There's a corner store within walking distance and Vons grocery store is less than .5 miles away. We spent a day at the Camerilla outlet and movie theatre! All within 15-20 minutes of the cottage. We spent another day driving the pacific coastal highway into Malibu and LA! Incredible! We did eat a few breakfast at BG's and Mrs. Olson's. Sorry, coaches! Both were excellent! My son loved the taco and burrito place down from the cottage! Again, sorry, coaches! And, Nirvana Cafe is an excellent wake up call of espresso, cappuchino, latte, and much much more! Also within walking distance of the cottage! There is so much to do near the cottage that we just didn't have time to visit! It's all outlined in the very handy red binder provided by the cottage owners! Another lovely feature! Like visiting the Channel Island Harbor and Marina. I'm not sure why considering we passed the area everyday, although, we did visit Toppers Pizza twice inside Channel Island Harbor. We were able to grill out in the backyard and have a small fire in the cottage's outdoor firepit. We used the Hottub which was nice. No need to rent surfboards! Two were provided at the cottage along with a shorter one. There was a bike as well. The washer and dryer was an excellent accommodation for us. We had a wonderful stay! Thank you again, Deborah!!!

Great Beach Getaway
October 1, 2013
We stayed at this beautiful cottage during the beginning of September and it was a great time. Just a very short walk to the beach, which I took full advantage of. Great location to go between Oxnard, Camarillo and Ventura. Free WiFi which was super convenient! Didn't get a chance to use the jacuzzi, but really want to next time. It was a perfect for what we needed. Can't wait to stay here again!

Beach Cottage Vacation
June 20, 2013
There were three of us that stayed at the beach cottage. We have known each other for over 35 years and plan a vacation yearly. This year we decided to get a place at the beach. What a wonderful vacation that was. We enjoyed our stay at the beach cottage. It was very relaxing and the cottage was excellent. We are already talking about going back next summer. I will be renting the cottage again very soon. Everything was just wonderful.

A Warm and Cozy Beach Cottage
January 4, 2013
My wife and I stayed in this house with another couple for the New Year's eve weekend at the end of 2012. It was a wonderful house. The rooms were spacious and the beds were comfortable. We didn't have any kids with us, but the loft room would be great for anybody with children. It's also in a very fun and friendly neighborhood. We took advantage of the proximity to the beach with daily walks on the beach and one evening we brought the chairs out to the beach to watch the sunset. The owner, Deborah, was friendly and easy to contact through email. I highly recommend this house for anyone looking for a charming, comfortable beach rental.

First, the owner of this home is so nice and easy to contact, quick to respond. The property management company is close to the home! This house is even more amazing than the photos! Quaint and private, a lot of small details have been added to make this place a true "beach cottage." Loved the firepit, bbq, hot outdoor shower, hot tub. Appreciated the sand toys, chairs, surf and boogie boards! Very clean, super spacious, has things like extra tv, few sheets, hand soap, kids toys, nice bedding. Great kitchen w everything we need to cook. The front neighbors are a little obnoxious but they don't bother..the upstairs loft is perfect, very cool because of ocean air. Location to beach is great! Seriously, I cannot say enough how perfect this place is!! It is your dream summer cottage in a great location where you feel safe and clean and happy.. best vacation ever!

Overall enjoyed our stay
September 5, 2009
Overall I would say it was as the ad said, a charming beach house. The house was very well kept and clean, the furniture and appliances worked wonderfully. We loved the outdoor patio and jacuzzi. The kitchen had everything that we needed for a week stay. It was great that they had beach toys, kid toys, videos and a pack and play there ready for us to use. The landlord was very nice to deal with and responded very promptly to all of our questions. The beach there was wonderful--not crowded at all, a lot of the times we were the only ones swimming. We unfortunately were visiting during a "warm spell" so the lack of air conditioning made it a bit uncomfortable--we were unable to have our son sleep upstairs as planned due to it being so hot. We had all of the windows open and the small fans that were provided, but it was still very warm and stuffy in the loft. So we would recommend going during a cooler time in the season. The walk to the beach wasn't bad--or you could even drive and park there if you had lots of beach equipment (which we did). We have a four year old and a 17 month old. The stairs to the kids loft were a bit steep for kids and we had to constantly watch them in that area. The throw rugs were somewhat of a tripping hazard for the 17 month old, but we understand why they were needed (due to the type of floor and sand). Overall we would stay there again, during a cooler season and when our kids are a little older and less likely to trip/fall.

The cottage is cozy and charming and feels as though it belongs in a good novel. Our family enjoyed many peaceful and joyful moments there. The cottage is classically decorated in a relaxed style and makes you feel immediately comfortable when you arrive - like walking into a good friend's house. It has everything you'd need, which allows for a stressfree (key for parents) vacation. We enjoyed the beach, kayaking in the harbor and cruising bikes around the neighborhood. My son loved sleeping upstairs with the sound of the ocean and a soft breeze coming through his window every night. I enjoyed having such an extensive children's library of books to read with him. It was also nice that he had his own little hide-away upstairs because it allowed the grown-ups more space to stay up late and enjoy watching movies, a nice fire with a good bottle of wine, or a dip in the jacuzzi. This cottage makes kids and grown ups happy - it is an ideal vacation spot that we look forward to returning to.
Loved the House just not the Property Mgmt Co
June 28, 2009
The house was fabulous and it was perfect for our vacation needs. However, Coldwell Property Mgmt should really invest in Customer Service training for their staff. They do not do a good job of explaining their policy and procedures and I found them to be quite difficult and unfriendly on the phone. I will look for a property that uses someone other than Coldwell next time.

Our kids' favorite vacation ever!
June 12, 2009
Our whole family loved staying at this charming beach bungalow! Perhaps it was the magical kids' loft bedroom, fully stocked with toys and books, or maybe it was the lovely hot tub or just the endless beach...for whatever reason, our 3 children still reminisce about our Oxnard trip, and they can't wait to return for another visit!

Great family get away
August 24, 2008
The house was just as advertised, and a great place for a family get away. The proximity to the beach was great, and of course the weather was unbeatable so we got a lot of use out of the great deck.
August 18, 2008
The house was just as promised. We had a wonderful, restful week. The children enjoyed the provided toys and there was an excellent selection of movies. We will definitely consider renting this house again.

Relaxing: taking a leisurely walk on Silverstrand Beach down to the marina and enjoying the sunset with a glass of wine. Visiting Ventura and enjoying shopping at the antique and thrift shops and dining at Palm 71 or Mary's Secret Garden (vegan) for dinner.
It is for this reason that we created our home to meet our high standards.
Our home is somewhere we would love to stay. Our beds are new and very comfortable. Our pillows are down. Our sheets are 400-600 count pure cotton.
In addition, we also appreciated homes that included books and toys for children. Our upstairs children's loft includes toys and books that entertain children after a long day of playing on the beach. We also have a pack and play, a baby monitor (for when parents go out to the jacuzzi at night!) and a crib.
