Description of the Paia vacation home rental
When you're at Paia Surf PERMIT# STPH2012/0001, you'll be uniquely situated. Not only are you in a gem of a coastal village (Paia), right beside the blue Pacific's open waters. You're also situated to enjoy a luxurious coastal home all by yourselves - just a short walk from the water. Whether you're part of a multi-generational family gathering, or an intimate romantic escapade, the house is all yours while you're there. And the house works great in different ways. Designed to be enjoyed communally, it also has plenty of little hideaway features that allow for privacy; places to get away from it all (the LANAI, for one). Very versatile, with an extreme "Oh wow! This place is gorgeous!" factor once you step inside. (read some reviews) But what about Paia - the little community you are now part of?
Our Paia Surf house has 5 bedrooms and 4 full bathrooms - all newly remodeled. It's all double-walled construction, with NEW insulation - windows - doors - stone tile floors - plumbing - electrical. The theme throughout? Drift wood. Sea glass. Sand. Every room has it's own quiet solar electric AC unit. There are 4 parking stalls on the property. The house can be rented as a whole, or separated into 3 independent units, a 3 bedroom, 2 bath second story with ocean view, gourmet kitchen and large lanai complete with comfortable outdoor furnishings. The ground level potentially has 2 units each with their own full bathroom; one with king bed and a kitchenette, the other with a queen bed, fridge and microwave. The lower units each have their own private lanais and can either be connected or separated. Parts of the house can be locked off and not charged to the guest for smaller groups. The house feels light and bright, insulated and quiet, even though it is located in the heart of Paia. The house is oceanside of the main highway, three houses from the shore. Check in is at 3pm. Check out at 10am. There is a five day minimum stay. Shorter stays require an extra charge for cleaning.
As a local family and business owners on this island, we feel privileged and proud to be able to contribute to our community by providing a service that benefits our town and the visitors that make the long journey across the ocean to experience Maui island. The north shore is the heart and soul of Maui. In Paia, you will be part of a community that feels more "local" than touristy, more homegrown and friendly than fussy - quite different from the south, and west, shores, jammed with mega-resorts from one end to the other.
Experience the essence of Maui at The Paia Surf. Come visit our home. We've lived here - and loved it - a long time.
Aloha and All The BEST,
Annie, Chris, Dylan and Evan McNeil
Folks who come to Maui love visiting our vibrant little town - one of the island's most beloved, fun, northshore hideaways. And what better way to experience its essence than residing in this charming, almost-at-the-beach/in-the-heart-of-the-village house. You're not just a visitor, you live there! Turn one way outside your door, and you're strolling by some of the island's best restaurants, earthy little cafes, places to get holistic massage, or a tasty cocktail while enjoying live music, historical sites ... all within a couple blocks. Turn the other way and it's a short walk to the beach and all its glories of sun/sea/sand. Shangri La. Hey - you live in Paia - not a bad way to go!

Other Vacation Rental Amenities
First, we recommend a good guide book like MAUI REVEALED by Andrew Doughty as a companion to researching all these day trips
SNORKEL/SURF FIESTA: Start with coffee from Anthony's across the street, snorkel in the morning at Dumps, La Perouse (only if there is not a south swell), lunch at Pita Paradise (Wailea or Kihei), if you kiteboard or windsurf then head to Kanaha, Sprecks, Sugar Cove, Kuau, Lanes or Hookipa for shred action, or if you are new to those sports, take a lesson with HST, then dinner in Paia at one of many fine establishments and listen to music.
SUNNY UPCOUNTRY HIKE: Breakfast at Grandma's or visit the Lavender Farm near Poli Poli Park and eat lavender scones with tea while enjoying bicoastal views. Walk or bike two miles on Thompson Rd (park at Grandmas) to Ulupalakua Winery. (Keep on going all the way to Kaupo, or even all the way to Hana! Otherwise, turn around and have lunch at the Ulupalakua Ranch Store (across from the winery) where they serve organic, local, grass-fed beef and elk burgers.
THE MIGHTY VOLCANO! Upcountry breakfast at La Provence, then take the Crater Rd and check out one of earth's natural wonders; Haleakala volcano (active, and the largest mountain on earth if you measure from the sea floor). It's a spectacular 12 mile hike. Park your car below and hitch a ride to the top (friendly locals will take you to the top - seriously) and then hike down Sliding Sands Trail back to your car. On your way back to Paia take Haliimaile Rd to Baldwin Ave. Dine at Haliiamaile General Store or stop in Makawao for Market Fresh Bistro. Walk the little town of Makawao for great shopping, then cocktails and music at Casanova's.
WEST SIDE SURF PARADISE: During summer south swell, breakfast at Café Des Amis in Paia, then take boards and go to Launiopoko or Puamana Park on the upper west side near Lahaina. Or if you are new to surfing take a lesson with the HST- (request our son Dylan McNeil, Rivers Brothers, Zack Howard or Dustin Tester of Maui Surfer Girls). Eat lunch in Lahaina at Star Noodle, or Longhis (ocean view) or Leoda's on the way back to Paia. Stop at Maalaea to tour the Maui Ocean Center. The shark tunnel is really cool! Kids will enjoy putt putt golf or the climbing wall. From Maalaea there is a five mile stretch of easy walking (Sugar Beach) that goes all the way to Kihei.
SURF-TURF: Head toward Wailuku and eat breakfast at Maui Lani Cafe O Lei in Kahului (with amazing views over a golf course) famous for al fresco meals on the Lanai (try Fresh Fish Eggs Beni), then either surf at Sand Piles, or hike The Waihe'e Coastal Dunes and Wetlands Preserve, where you will find ancient Hawaiian ruins and a huge heiau, not to mention stunning ocean views and secret surf spots. After your hike, hit a few golf balls at a gorgeous public golf club, Waiehu, then lunch at the Café O Lei while looking out over manicured greens and ocean. Fresh fish, local greens, and affordable golf. From Wailuku you can also swing by Iao Valley to see waterfalls, or walk through the botanical gardens on the way.
WALK THROUGH PARADISE: For lower west end, hike to La Perouse and beyond on The King's Trail (it's full of huge lava stones - substantial hiking shoes needed) It goes for miles, then opens up into little marshy ponds that harbor endangered birds - plus super secret surf spots. Cool. Spend the afternoon at the most beautiful beach on the island, Makena! (please please be careful of the lethal waves that rise up and slap people down right at the edge of the water - that's called Shore Pound - lots of injuries where one least expects it) Then eat at Pita Paradise. I command you.
WATERFALLS & BAMBOO FORESTS: Breakfast in Paia (Des Amis, Mambo, or Charly's) then head EAST toward Haiku on the magnificent Hana Hwy, to Twin Falls. From there, hike to numerous waterfalls. Be amazed. Jump off those waterfalls. Past Twin Falls hike to The Bamboo Forest. Listen to the gigantic bamboos clacking in the wind. Wow. Stop in Haiku on the way back to visit the bakery at the Cannery, Coleens, or Veg Out in Haiku Town. Now that's a day!
WEST SIDE PLEASURE CRUISE: Take the quintessential upper west side drive along the beautiful coast from Honopiilani Hwy all the way to Honolua. Snorkel Honolua, and hike from Honolua to Wind Mills (stunning hike - not well known). Places that we eat along the way are Longhis, Star Noodle and Leodas.
Right out the door in Paia are all these within-walking-distance places: Need COFFEE? There are a few, but we go to Anthony's Coffee Company (90 Hana Hwy) mostly. They offer a more traditional, high-caliber café experience, with plenty of breakfast options, and will even put together a picnic lunch for you.
When it's serious meal time, one of our all time favorites is Café Des Amis (42 Baldwin Rd) for their French, Mediterranean, and Indian cuisine. Tiny place, inexpensive, and very tasty. Curries and crêpes after surfing works just fine. Down the street a little is Milagro's (3 Baldwin Rd) for outstanding mexican/margaritas/fish tacos. A stone's throw from there is Paia Fishmarket (100 Hana Hway) for outstanding seafood, large portions, and reasonable prices. #1 cure for jet lag, so they say. Nearby is Flatbread (89 Hana Hway) for organic, locally-grown ingredients in great salads and pizzas. Always good. For a rowdy restaurant/saloon that serves great breakfasts, we love Charley's (142 Hana Hwy) for its burgers, salads, pizzas, curry (?), and live music. (Willie Nelson loves playing here!) Also nearby is Café Mambo (30 Baldwin Rd) for island style breakfast (plus lunch & dinner). Omelettes, burritos, french toast, smoothies, just to start. We love it.
And for that once-in-a-lifetime, fine dining experience, take a short drive east on the Hana Hway to Mama's Fish House (799 Poho Place) for some of the most memorable seafood dishes you'll ever encounter. It's more expensive than the other places, but in this case, it's totally worth it. Wow. Let Mama take care of you!
For dessert just make it Ono Gelato Co. (115 Hana Hwy), a place that manages to combine the best gelato with the exploding fruit goodness and variety of the islands.
We have 4 large flatscreen internet TVs for streaming Netflix. We have 4 ipod, ipad, iphone docs for playing music and charging ipads and iphones. We have 2 gas grills and 3 lanais, 2 of them covered. We have 6 ACs in all the rooms. We have a peak a boo ocean view from upstairs lanai.

We loved it so much we are going back next summer! Thanks for the wonderful experience!
A breath of fresh air...
August 15, 2013
After spending time on the mainland of Hawaii in a beautiful resort, it was hard to believe that our vacation could improve. Little did we know what we had in store at Paia Surf. Prior to our arrival, our family felt cared for due to the kindness and hospitality of our hosts. Annie went above and beyond to make sure that Paia Surf was tailored to fit our family’s individual needs. Chris & Annie care for Paia Surf as if it was their own house, - the pictures online do not give it justice. We loved the small details – fresh fruit, handcrafted soaps, and local beer – placed for us to enjoy on our stay. In addition, the housekeepers are fantastic, and every surface was immaculate upon our arrival. Paia Surf is located in the heart of the bustling town of Paia and allowed us to transform from tourists to members of the community. Each day we were able to buy fresh fruit, veggies, and fish from a local market and make delicious meals. Chris and Annie offered great recommendations to authentic restaurants and local activities. Best of all, Paia Surf was located only a few blocks from the beach! While it was the most beautiful beach we encountered on our trip, it wasn’t crowded. Residents greeted us warmly in town and on the beach – truly teaching us the meaning of the “Aloha Spirit!” We are so thankful to Chris & Annie for making our stay memorable, and we look forward to retuning someday! I promise you, once you visit this house you will never want to leave!

Paia Surf Rocks!
July 31, 2013
Paia Surf rocks! Fifteen minutes from the airport, we pulled into our private parking spot. We punched the codes and opened up onto a private Hawaiian world of relaxation and good will. Beautifully decorated and immaculately kept, we had everything we needed (and more) at our fingertips. My wife and I lounged in our private garden, sipping beer and wine provided by our attentive hosts. One half block from our doorstep, the Hawaiian village of Paia provided us with awesome, authentic choices for food and entertainment that you don't get at the resorts. We also cooked in, going to an amazing Hawaiian grocery one and a half blocks away, for the freshest fish, fruits and veggies that I have seen. The beach is two blocks down, where a public park unfolds into a sugar sand beach that is out of the movies. The route from Paia to the crater rim in Haleakala National Park is a beautiful 32 miles of winding scenery that will take your breath away. You will be impressed with the attention to detail at Paia Surf. You will also learn that the "Aloha Spirit" of welcoming guests to this private paradise is second nature here!

Me and my family had a blast staying at Paia Surf Vacation Home. Lots to do and great places to eat all within walking distance. Very short walk to the beach. You are going to love this place. Annie and Chris are the best. They made our welcome so warm we are coming back next year

The house is so nice the pictures can't do it justice. My family and I stayed here and we all had an amazing time and were sad to leave. There were so many things to do in town we felt like we didn't have to drive anywhere, the restaurants were all so good and there were so many places to shop. The house was about a 5 minute walk to the beach and that was my favorite! We would spend days on the beach come back to the house and watch the sunset on the lanai. The owners are so nice and easy to work with, Annie was so helpful all throughout our trip and made us feel so welcome. This place was such a great vacation I'm sure we will be back!
Fabulous Location, Immaculate accomdations

We spent just over a week at the Paia Surf house (all units) with a family of eight. This was by far the best vacation rental I have ever stayed in. The attention to detail was so appreciated! Everything was spotless, the finishes were high end (granite, travertine, etc.) and the decor was an added plus. Everything seemed brand new. Annie was out of this world accommodating providing great ideas and all the little niceties, coffee, wine, treats. They had an amazing beach set up with chairs, umbrellas, towels, boogie boards, and snorkel gear. The location was fabulous, it felt like we were locals instead of one of many at a huge resort. The beach is a short walk away, as well as great restaurants and shops. I would stay here again in a heartbeat. Thanks for everything annie!

Paia Surf was a great place-great location right in town but remarkably quiet, very nicely decorated and stocked with everything you would need for your stay. I will stay here again.

My husband, 2 year-old son and I went to Maui for 10 days to spend our anniversary -- and were joined part of the trip by a couple of friends. We initially booked the upper 3 bedrooms (there are an additional 2 separate bedrooms on the lower floor), but after the 3 of us spent the night, it became clear we'd need more space for the additional couple.
The upper part of the house would be perfect for a family with a couple of kids (2-4), or extra family members who are really close.
The house is in Paia -- an excellent location. The little town is about 10 minutes from the airport, 15 minutes from Haiku (where some of the biking tours down the volcano start -- and I totally recommend), and about 45 minutes from Lahaina.
We arrived and the place was equipped with most of the things we needed: A high chair and a booster seat, a stroller, a potty, a pack 'n play (which was too small for our 2 year-old, but would be great for a younger child) and loads of beach toys. For the rest of us: Beach towels, every essential kitchen gadget and some amazing fruits and snacks.
The place was really clean and nicely decorated. The outdoor patio was fantastic. The a/C units worked really well. The outdoor showers and foot baths were really convenient.
The house is literally in the heart of Paia -- right behind a gift shop and gas station near Hana Highway and Baldwin ave. -- which made it a little loud some evenings. But more often than not, we were happy to be in the middle of everything and have Paia Fish Market and Ono Gelato literally a minute walk away. Manna grocery store was about a 4 minute walk and had everything we needed.
Annie and Chris were exceedingly helpful. They responded to every email quickly and helpfully (Our son got sick our first day and they recommended a doctor on the island). Their recommendations on the island were great.
My only suggestion would be to have a mid-trip cleaning option.
I would absolutely recommend Paia Surf!

The Paia Surf is perfectly situated in downtown Paia. This house is spotless, peaceful, and beyond comfortable. The owners are so helpful and have thought of every last detail you could need while on vacation. The lanai is such a beautiful place to start and end you day. We will be back next year!

We enjoyed an easy ½ block walk to the wonderfully quirky town of Pa'ia with it's interesting shops and delicious food. The location makes nice a base from which to explore the island. The house was beautifully appointed, peaceful and private. Attention was paid to freshness and detail. The covered lanai was one of favorite spots. We were thankful and surprised to find many extras: coffee, fresh fruit, a bottle of wine, and fresh flowers. Our hosts were very friendly and available to answer any questions and to even arrange access to a private beach. How could anyone ask for more? We give this beautiful gem and our hosts five stars.

Relaxing, we spent our evenings sitting out on the deck, watching the stars and listening to the ocean waves crashing on the beach. Our unit was very clean, modern, with tile floors, granite counter tops, big screen tv's. it was great to be able to walk a few blocks and pick up dinner, then go back to our sweet place and enjoy a private dinner on our deck. The outside beach showers, allowed us to rinse the sand off before going inside. The ease of living there is why I enjoyed our stay and why I also look forward to my return.

This house is great for a stay in Paia, it's clean, quiet, and inviting. The kitchen is stocked with all you would need to cook for family and friends. We spent much of our time out on the wonderful deck with comfortable furnishings. The house is loceted with just a few minute walk to resturants, groceries and the beach. We enjoyed our stay. My husband and I along with our 2.5yr old toddler had a wonderful week long stay at Paia Surf. It is a beautiful house (we rented the top portion) and is perfectly situated in Paia. We spent most of our time at different beaches (including baby lagoon) but also had a chance to eat at many places in Paia including going out for gelato each night (it's about 20 steps from the house!).
The owners helped make the vacation so easy with great suggestions for beaches and restaurants but also provided so much basic stuff for our toddler including a high chair, booster seat, potty, toys, sand toys, umbrella stroller, fish nets, and the cutest kids table and chairs (matched the dining room chairs). It just made the vacation so easy for us. Thanks annie and

Paia Surf was a wonderful place to have my solo painting time before my family joined me in Maui. It had a fridge, microwave, dishes and my sweet hostess annie even left me goodies like a botttle of wine, coffee and snacks. How thoughtful. I had my own patio to rest on after my days of painting the island. Annie checked in with me to make sure all was well which is comforting when one is traveling solo.

When I arrived at this beautiful little place, I was greeted with fresh fruits, homemade banana bread and a welcoming, friendly smile. I stayed at the Makai suite which was recently updated in a very tasteful and elegant way, having a peaceful island feel without being at all hokey or cliche. The unit was impeccably clean. There was no beach access at the end of the street (by no fault of the owners) but a nice sandy beach was less than a 5 minute walk. Annie was very accommodating even on short notice. I would absolutely stay at this place again and recommend it to anyone.

We were very impressed with our stay at paia surf. The suite was brand new and equipped with everything you could ever need for being comfortable in the special town of Paia. Having a backyard and a BBQ was a huge bonus for us as it made us feel right at home. The outdoor shower was also a nice touch after coming home sandy from the beach. I've traveled all over the world and stayed at many places but I found the extra attention the proprietors at Paia Surf added to this suite was world class. I highly recommend this place and we hope to come back again soon.

Best Location in Paia
Left on 11/24/2012 for a stay in November 2012
This was the first time we have stayed on the North Shore and we certainly feel like we nailed it with this rental. My conclusion is that Paia Surf is literally the most central location for access to the amenities of Paia - you walk out the door and are at any destination within a couple of minutes walking. Because of the central location, we were actually concerned that noise might be an issue ... but not the case. The unit is newly renovated and decorated - so tastefully, in fact, that we were taking pictures so we can "borrow" some of the design ideas. It's got a bit of a beach cottage feel ... but also with all the modern conveniences. Bedrooms are cozy. The main living area and the lanai are great spaces to hang out and entertain. As a tech geek, I was particularly impressed with the aC system, fans and TV. Of course, everything is clean and new ... which is always nice. The place was also very generously outfitted with supplies and accessories. The only knock is this place isn't sitting on the beach ... but, of course, we wouldn't be able to afford it if that was the case. Final note is the proprietor, Annie, was extraordinarily gracious and helpful. We would recommend this place in a heartbeat.
We'll Be Back!

We really enjoyed our family vacation at Paia Surf. The house has been recently remodeled and it is both beautiful and comfortable. We especially loved the big kitchen and chilling on the lanai in the evening. Staying in Paia was a lot of fun; it is a cool little town with shops and restaurants within walking distance, and a very laidback island vibe. The house is in a nice hub location, with easy access up-island, Hana-way, or the "tourist-dense" west side of Maui if you are inclined to go that route (even though we are tourist, it was nice not to have to step over all of the other tourists!). And, of course, it is a great spot for easy access to water, wind, and waves. I can't recommend Paia Surf more highly - we will definitely be back.

Right in the heart of downtown paia.
Close to all the shops, restaurants and my most favorite of all Mana market.. I highly recommend doing all of your shopping here, bringing it back and preparing any meal in the brand new kitchen! Enjoy the view of the ocean from the terrace. This is a very comfortable, clean and convenient location. I couldn't have asked for more! All of the amenities of home but newer, better and walking distance to Baldwin beach!

What a fantastic location! Within an easy 10 miles or so from the airport in the most convenient little town on Maui. Paia is on the way to both Hana and Haleakala and the house is an easy walk to the beach. Mama's Fish House is a short drive and an incredible dinning experience. There is no shortage of restaurants and shops that you can walk to, we are early morning coffee drinkers from a different time zone and the coffee spot down the street is open at 5:30 am,perfect!! Our favorite discovery was The grocery store, Mana Foods, so skip Whole Foods on your way in from the airport and shop at a local store that has everything you need just a 5 min. walk from the house.
The house is newly updated. We were lucky to be the first guests to stay in the 3 bedroom upstairs. It is immaculate and bright with a lanai that you can see 5-0 from, local surf spot for you non surfers. The master bedroom opens to the lanai and at night we fell asleep to the sound of surf and the wind through the palms on the super comfy bed.
The worst thing I could possibly say is the town is a popular spot so traffic is to be expected and parking can be difficult but you won't have to worry if you stay here, the house has good parking and you can walk to everything.
We will definietly be back and have recommended the house to all our friends.
