Area Description

Oceanside is the name given to the region from Nanoose Bay north to Deep Bay along the east coast of Vancouver Island.
The five-kilometre stretch of beach at Rathtrevor Provincial Park is perfect for families who enjoy the sand. When the tide is out, the waters at Parksville and Qualicum beach reveal kilometres of beach that stretch hundreds of metres seaward, and when the tide is in the shallow swimming waters are the warmest sea waters north of California.
There are six golf courses nearby, Qualicum Beach Memorial (a 9-hole course) in Qualicum Beach; Arrowsmith Golf Club (par 61); west of Qualicum Beach is Pheasant Glen Golf Links an open links style course; the 18 holes at Eaglecrest Golf Club vary from seaside to forest, south of Parksville is the 18-hole Morningstar International (ranked as one of Canada's Best Courses); and Fairwinds Golf and Country Club (par 71) is at Nanoose Bay. All are within a half hour drive of each other and are open to the public. Of course our own Riptide Lagoon Adventure Golf features two 18-hole mini-golf courses in a fantasy village.
In August, Parksville is home to a month-long beach festival that includes a sand sculpting competition. The sculptures remain on display until the end of August. Events also include a festival of lights, kidfest, croquet championships, and nightly entertainment.
From early July to the end of August, every Tuesday from 6-9pm, the Parksville Chamber of Commerce hosts it's annual Summer by the Sea street market on Craig Street in downtown Parksville.
North of Qualicum Beach are a number of parks that front on interior lakes or the ocean. Horne Lake Caves Provincial Park is the region's spelunking centre. It has a campground and picnic area, and you can boat or waterski on the lake. Not far away, Spider Lake Park has a small beach good for launching canoes and kayaks and for swimming. No motorized boats are allowed on this lake. Rosewall Provincial Park, north of Deep Bay, has a wheelchair accessible path that winds through coastal rainforest. Take a picnic and stop by MacMillan Provincial Park which is famous for Cathedral Grove, one of the most accessible stands of giant Douglas-fir trees in B.C. Some are 800 years old.
At Coombs, is Butterfly World and Gardens, where kids can view a colourful community. Check out Coombs itself, with its shops, amusement park and goats that graze on the sod roof of the main market. From July 29 - 31, they host the Coombs Country Bluegrass Festival and the Coombs Fair from August 13-14 with live music, horse gymnastics, chicken and duck races and a lot more.
Englishman River Falls has a bathing hole created among the rocks at low water in the summertime and Mountain Bikers will enjoy Top Bridge Regional Park near Parksville.
