Description of the Peaks Island vacation cottage rental
The cottage is open from Memorial Day until Columbus Day each year. The rates are $2,500/week in July and August, $1,800/week in June and after Labor day. We rent full weeks only, Saturday - Saturday in July and August. Low season minimum stay is three nights.
This is a NON-SMOKING cottage. High speed wireless is provided, but guests must bring their own linens or rent them from a service on the island. Quiet, well-behaved pets are welcome, but there is an extra cleaning fee.
The house is right on the water with an uninterrupted view across the sparkling sea "all the way to Portugal." It's a charming, traditional family cottage, fully furnished and well-equipped. Peaks Island is a quiet family paradise offering beaches, tennis courts and great bike-riding, just a 20-minute car ferry ride from the shopping, excellent restaurants, museum and movies of Portland. Catch stripers from the rocks or just sit on the porch and watch the boats go by.
Location
The cottage is located on the back shore of Peaks Island in a very quiet "neighborhood" (four houses) at the end of a dead-end road. The house sits high above the road, about 30 feet from the rocky shore of Josiah’s Cove. The view from the porch is unbeatable. There is always something to watch, whether it be lobstermen hauling traps, a tanker passing in the channel, a regatta offshore, a glorious moonrise or sunrise. I have caught bass by casting from the rocks.
Furnishings
The house is simply but completely furnished, for family use, not as a "rental property." Virtually everything in the cottage has some sentimental value, having been either handed down from parents and grandparents or repaired, purchased, or brought back from a journey by the current generation of the family.
The kitchen is fully equipped with pots, pans, and plenty of china, flat ware, sharp knives, and other tools. There is a relatively new gas range, a refrigerator with freezer, a microwave and a dishwasher. Coffee maker and grinder. We compost, so there is no dispose-all. Washer and dryer are downstairs.
Description of rooms
The house is of traditional cottage construction. It sits on high ledge, so there are three levels in the back, two on the front. It is not insulated or "improved," so the 2x4 structure is exposed on the inside. Most walls have been painted white. Floors on the main level were sanded and varnished in 2006. On the other levels they are painted.
Ground floor
Deck. Outdoor shower. Shop. Laundry with washer and dryer. Small sleeping area with single bed. Electrical service and hot water heater.
Main floor
Big porch on two sides. Large living room with cathedral ceiling, sky lights, piano and working fireplace. (Firewood not necessarily supplied, though.) Small dining room. Big kitchen with plenty of work space. Pantry with shelves and fridge. Two bedrooms, each with a traditional double bed, half bath in between.
Top floor
Full bath with claw foot tub and linen closets. Master bedroom with double bed. Adjoining child's bedroom with two iron twin beds. We can set up a crib if requested. There are water views from both bedrooms, and roof windows provide excellent light and ventilation.
Miscellaneous
There is wireless internet access, phone service, and a DVD player. Lots of cards, books and board games. Cell phones do not work too well at this point on the island.
Non-destructive pets OK.
Absolutely NO SMOKING allowed in or near the house.
Parking limited to two cars.

Area Information
Peaks Island is a family summer paradise offering beaches, sailing, fishing, tennis and bicycling on safe roads. You'll see very few cars, but will enjoy stunning ocean views as you pedal or walk around the island. Visitors can shop at the local market or lobster shack and enjoy home-made meals on the porch, eat out at one of three restaurants on the island or sample the broad range of fare offered by chefs (some nationally known) in the city of Portland. Car and passenger ferries make the 20-minute crossing back and forth between mainland and island approximately every hour. Guided tours of the island via golf cart are available, and a visit to the museum dedicated to the Fifth Maine Civil War regiment is a must for history buffs.

Peaks Island

We had a wonderful time at this cottage. The location was perfect and the house was charming and clean. I wish we were more prepared w/ island life (ferry, shopping, etc. ) but we'll know next time.
