The surrounding area is also fascinating. The unique, porous topography of the Yucatan peninsula has created a large network of underground rivers and "cenotes" or sinkholes. These cool, fresh water pools that are hidden in the jungle and which were considered sacred by the Mayans, are an ideal place to cool off on a hot summer day or the starting place of an exhilarating underwater adventure through subterranean caves and caverns.
Mayan ruins, jungle treks, unique eco-amusement parks and secluded beaches are only a short drive away from Playa del Carmen.
There are three famous Mayan archaeological sites nearby. The closest is Tulum, a stunning site set upon a cliff overlooking the Caribbean. About 40 minutes away from Playa del Carmen, it is one of the most spectacular sites because of its surroundings.
Two hours away from Playa is Coba, one of the oldest sites in the peninsula and the one with the highest pyramid. Coba is a very extended site and is famous because of it has many remnants of ''''''sacbes '''''' or white roads, which at one time use to traverse the peninsula and join the different Mayan cities and towns.
Three and a half hours away takes us to Chichen Itza, one of the most famous sites of ancient Mayan culture. One of the things it is most renowned for is that on every equinox, the shadow of Quetzacoatl, the Plumed Serpent, is seen descending the stairs of the Castle, Chichen Itza ''''''s highest pyramid.
Scuba Diving and Snorkeling
One of the things the Western Caribbean is most renowned for is snorkeling and scuba diving. The second largest barrier reef runs along the Quintana Roo coast, in front of Playa del Carmen, all the way down to Belize. It is home to a large variety of spectacular marine life that swim in and out of amazing coral gardens.
The crystal clear, turquoise waters of the Caribbean invite professionals and amateurs to dive into its sea and discover an unforgettable and magical world.
Less than 10 minutes away from Playa del Carmen is Xcaret, one of the most famous eco-parks in Mexico.

I stay at the Playa Palms every year this will be the first review I have written. The staff at Tha Palms has got to be the best in Playa Del Carmen, it starts from when you walk up those stairs Carlos is always waiting witha huge smile and wants to make sure you have any thing you need..AS you walk to your room you can bet you will see Luis smiling from erar to ear and welcome you with a great big hello. The rooma are very spacious and the cleaning staff always keeps them very clean..The fact that you have the beach right there is a big plus, you are just a few blocks from 5th ave for all your shopping...I always hate to leave the Palms and dream on my flight home unitl my next visit there..Remember to ask for my friend Edwin on the beach he is the waiter from Coco Maya he will take great care of you and please tell him his friend Wanda told you to ask for him...you will never have to move he will take that good care of you.The beds are great here the rooms are nice and cool with air condionting .if you are going with a family I highly recommend room 112 right on the beach king bed then down stairs you have 2 queen bed and a kitchenette....The showers are amazing plenty of water pressure and hot water. The garden views are also very nice rooms I ahve staid in all the different rooms they offer, garden view, partial ocean vies, beach front, and studio beach front ( room 112) and I love them all. However room 112 is now my favorite it was nice to have the kitchenette for breakfast...
