Exquisite rainforest beachfront Eco-House
|Per night||$115 - $155|
|Per week||$805 - $2,150|
The four bedrooms have queen beds with bamboo posts and 'no-see-um' netting, and the house is well-ventilated with many windows and a breezeway. We attended to airflow with a cupola and large openings all around the house. The open-air porch downstairs houses hammocks for your relaxation, and the kitchen and living room were positioned to take advantage of the lovely view to the water.
Enjoy the natural wonders just outside the windows, as there are four kinds of monkeys in the region, and the wildlife includes toucans, macaws, sloths, blue morpho butterflies and iguanas to name a few. Mature trees feature fresh fruit including guava, bananas, mangos, papayas, coconut, cacao, and avocados. The beautiful landscaping of our grounds can be viewed from the house or by strolling the paths that lead to the beach just a few yards away from the house. The property is located between two rivers. The closest river provides a refreshing pool of sparkling clear gurgling water for your enjoyment after swimming and surfing.
The casa is totally off the grid, with solar power, well water, and propane tanks for cook-stoves and hot-water heaters. Our on-demand hot water is available in sinks and showers. We have walk-in showers and deluxe linens for your comfort. The owners, Melanie and Kim Norman, live on-site in a manager house, and are available to help make your stay comfortable. They can book tours, do some cooking, babysit the kids, or take you on jungle-waterfall tours. "Soul Rhythms" dance-exercise classes are offered by Melanie.

Cabo Matapalo, named for the strangler vine that is seen on some trees, this area of the Osa Peninsula is the last land point where the Pacific Ocean meets Gulf Dulce. There are other areas known as Matapalo around Costa Rica, so we are referring to a Point that is in the extreme Southwest Pacific region of Costa Rica.
The beach here is a mix of sand and round rocks and the surf is the largest and most undisturbed of the whole Gulf Dulce area. This is because the swell is coming in all the way from the Antarctic without hitting land.
The Matapalo area includes this point of the Osa Peninsula, but it also encompasses several beaches known to the locals as Matapalo Beach, Backwash Bay, Pan Dulce, and Playa Carbonera. People who visit this part of Costa Rica seem to always come back to this special place of nature.
Casa Dos Rios is located at Playa Carbonera (Carbonera Beach). By the time the waves reach here they are smaller and calmer. The government of Costa Rica is considering taking this whole area of the Osa Peninsula into the wildlife refuge of the Corcovado Park because of the abundance of wildlife (and endangered species of birds and animals) found here.

Great Stay at Casa Dos Rios

We just returned from a wonderful vacation at the most beautiful place we've ever seen. Kim and Melanie were fabulous hosts and their beachfront house is nestled just inside the rainforrest. Each morning we had our coffee on the deck and watched the wave roll in on the beach while the beautiful cobalt blue butterflies passed by. We fell asleep each night to the sound of the waves and the crickets and awoke each morning to the sound of the howler monkeys. The beach house is unique and well built - we felt as though we were living in a tree house. We had endless areas to explore including beaches to walk on, rivers to hike through, and trails through the jungle to hike on. There is even a great little jungle bar within walking distance. Our hosts are very informative and knowlegable about the area so we actually learned more on this holiday than any other. We had sunshine every day and only a light breeze. The ocean water here is very warm, when the tide goes out there are small pools of water in the rocks that are as warm as bath water. If we needed to cool down we strolled through a river. This was a very memorable vacation! Sandi & Ken Jackson

We had first visited Costa Rica in 2003 with a trip to Puerto Jimenez during a very rainy week in late October. We were captivated with the Matapalo area even then. On 3 successful trips we explored other areas of Costa Rica, and also a trip to Panama, but decided to return to Matapalo which had stayed in our hearts.
This is truly a very special place and I feel so at home here, that it does not seem so much a vacation, but a haven indescribable, so comfortable and soul restoring.
Everything is amazingly easy and in tune. The house is just perfect, it has a tremendous feeling to it. Both Ned and I have enjoyed each day more than the last. There is a beautiful rhythm to the days and the area is truly magical!
We hold this visit as one of the most special and would love the opportunity to return in the near future.
Thank you for you and your managers wonderful hospitality!

Casa Dos Rios is perfect for our family vacation! Plenty of room for the grandson, daughter and son-in-law, son and ourselves. This is our 4th trip to the Osa, the first to Casa Dos Rios.
Younger folk enjoyed surfing lesson, tree climb and waterfall repelling. Older folk liked the view, breeze and ocean water, even braved a hike up the Carbonera.
The “howler” alarm clock is unique!

One of the finest moments of my stay at CDR was the sight of 2 macaws flying over. Seeing their brilliance in person (not in a zoo) was spectacular. And, of course, the spider monkey family taking a leisurely jaunt through the trees was a treat. Corcovado was magnificent. I had my first experience seeing La Flor de Passion.

Once again the Osa called us back and we came! And again we were lost in the beauty of the Osa, the music and the moment.
The surf lessons with Oldemar (“Pollo”) were a blast! You can teach and “old dog” a new trick. Andy's nature walk was very informative about the area. Caught fish out front Costa Rica style while the kids played for hours in the waves and streams. The “howlers” alarm clock at 4:30am was perfect for my husband that checked the waves early.
Thank you Melanie and Kim for sharing this beautiful home with our family, so we could relax, recharge and fill up on down time!

Fell completely in love with the Osa Peninsula and were privileged to stay at this beautiful, breathtaking location. Casa Dos Rios caters to all needs; everything thought through to the last detail. Well done Kim and Melanie for such a lovely, lovely place. We will both take home very happy memories and hope to return sometime soon. Thank you so much!
Melanie and Kim,
Having built our own home in California, we know what it takes to create a place like this. You have been meticulous down to the very last detail... even the trim on the shutters and Casa Dos Rios sits so perfectly in its environment. What a triumph.
We had a fabulous time - you looked after our every need. Thank you.

Melanie & Kim - Words and photos are dismal failures at describing this place. It is, of course, a spectacular setting - with helpful taxi drivers, friendly caretakers and beautiful landscaping. But what we cannot stop talking about is the house that Kim built and Melanie outfitted - perfect in every detail - so well conceived. I could go on and on but will wait to do so in person. You have created a wonder and thank you.
Kim & Melanie, This is really fantastic. The design, construction, decoration and attention to detail. You guys really did an incredible job of it and should be very proud of what you've accomplished here.
Our family had a very enjoyable time at casa Dos Rios. The house was everything we hoped it would be. Everything went very smoothly and according to plan. Thank you very much for helping us set up our vacation. The kids will always remember it.
“Casa Dos Rios was the perfect setting for our January honeymoon. We had so much fun exploring the area, and the onsite caretaker was a perfect host, making sure we were comfortable and helping us book excursions. We saw more wildlife while relaxing on the porch than most Costa Rica vacationers see throughout the whole country. Our only regret is that we couldn't stay longer at Casa Dos Rios.”
We had a wonderful time, thanks in large part to our very comfortable stay in Casa dos Rios and your generous time in scheduling activities for us.
Everything about Casa dos Rios was perfect. It exceeded all of my expectations. It was beautiful, it was comfortable, it was well suited to our large group of seven, and it was right on the water… Every detail was lovely, down to the trim on the shutters.
Thanks very much. We will definitely recommend you to our friends, and hope to be back in the near future.
We would like to arrive a day or two early, and stay 3 days or so late. So we would want the house for at least 10 days. We looooooove CASA RIOS, I can't wait to come back.
