When you choose to vacation or get-away in the Adirondacks, you're choosing a 6 million acre state park made up of privately and publicly owned land. The Adirondack State Park is the largest wilderness area in the lower 48 states. Driving is a way of life. Think about it- you can't have remote, pristine wilderness within 1/2 hour drive of a major city! Raquette Lake is centrally located: 2.5 hr drive from Albany, Syracuse, Burlington (Vt) or Plattsburgh; 1.5 hr drive from Utica/Rome, Lake George or Lake Placid; 1/2 hr drive from Old Forge, Indian Lake or Long Lake. But the effort is worth it! When you get here, you've entered sacred space.
The State land is constitutionally protected from any kind of development- thus "forever wild." Raquette Lake, with 99 miles of shoreline, is the largest natural lake in the Adirondacks. 80% of the shoreline is owned by the State so you won't see many camps or people- just pristine shoreline, woods and wildlife. Besides the obvious outdoor recreation opportunities there are many other forms of entertainment and cultural and historical experiences. Combine a cruise on theW.W, Durant, moored in downtown Raquette Lake, with a guided tour of Great Camp Sagamore, the Alfred Vanderbilt estate and the only Great Camp open for public tours. Visit the brand new Natural History Museum in Tupper Lake, the Wild Center! To see how people have lived, worked and played in the Adirondacks for the last 100 years visit The Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake. The Arts Center in Blue Mountain Lake offers a full schedule of programs, concerts, classes and shows. Lake Placid is just 75 miles north- a nice day trip. Other day trip possibilities include Lake George, Inlet and Old Forge with activity, shopping and dining options galore!
People come to this part of the Adirondacks to enjoy the outdoor recreational opportunities, the history and the solitude. It's quiet. It's not commercial. It's a different world.
