Saco beaches (Ferry Beach, Camp Ellis, Bayview, Kinney Shores) are located 2-1/2 miles south of Old Orchard Beach and are at the ocean on Saco Bay. On Saco beaches, bonfires are usually allowed with fire department ''''''s permits. Old Orchard has amusements & gift shops. From the beach area, it's about 5 miles to Funtown which is a theme park & water park; about 7 miles to the Aquaboggin, a water park; about 10 minutes to major supermarkets. Saco is half way between Kittery & Freeport for outlet shopping; 20 minutes to South Portland to a major mall and 20 minutes to Portland. We're about 1-1/2 hours or so from the Boston area.
At Camp Ellis there are two local restaurants, a bait & tackle shop, a mile-long jetty to fish from or just to walk on, a large dock with both fishing & pleasure boats in the harbor. You can also fish right off Surf St. in Ferry Beach at high tide or off the beach itself. The tackle shop in Camp Ellis is on the dock area. Camp Ellis is a "Fishing Village" area now dotted with newly-remodeled homes and some of the older ones still here. It is still an active fishing area for commercial lobstermen & fishermen. You can go over to the dock and watch both fishing vessels and pleasure boats. Nearby is the Camp Ellis General Store which features daily lobster catch during season & will cook to perfection while you. You can also buy lobsters directly from the lobsterman, Dean Coniaris, the Fish'n Optician at "boat prices". You wouldd have to cook them yourself if bought from him. Whale watching & deep-sea fishing boats leave from the docks in Camp Ellis. Kayak rentals are nearby for use on the Saco River which goes out to the ocean at Saco Bay.
Both areas are quaint areas, catering to families, sandy beaches (smaller one at Camp Ellis), unspoiled by high rises.
When you go to the beach and have to go back for lunch, etc., you will not need to bring your blanket or chairs back. No one will touch them when you are gone. It's that type of a beach and is an area catering to families. Many families return here year after year for vacations.
