It is common to stumble upon Mayan ruins in your travels, and Large Mayan sites are scattered throughout the region. The beaches of the Yucatan Coast, also called the Flamingo Coast due to the thousands of flamingos that nest there, are gorgeous and undiscovered for the most part. Santa Clara, a small fishing village, is 40 miles from both Progreso and Merida and a 3.5 hour drive from Cancun.
