Description of the Sedgwick vacation cottage rental

Kill Kare is uniquely located in a pine forest on the shores of a pristine freshwater lake on the Blue Hill Peninsula of Maine's Down East coast - only 1/4 mile inland from the ocean waters of the Penobscot Bay. So named because you can come here to “kill your cares,” the cottage has been in our family since it was built in 1917. There is a warm spirit about this home that provides both energy and peace - a place to recharge and to unwind.

It is an ideal family retreat where you can do as much or as little as you please. Its deeply wooded site on a sparkling lake offers a beautiful setting to enjoy a variety of water sports. Much more comfortable for swimming and boating than the nearby salt waters, the lake is literally outside your front door.

The cottage faces west so imagine yourself sitting on the porch - feeling as though you are on your own private yacht - and enjoying a stunning sunset. Later in the evening, venture out onto the porch and take in the stars that are so bright they seem to pop out of the sky.

Kill Kare's inviting living room with ample seating is anchored by a large fieldstone fireplace. There is also a dining room, and a well-equipped country kitchen with eat-in space. Six bedrooms (two queen-sized, six twins) and two and one-half baths (one with bath and one with bath/shower) comfortably accommodate a total of ten guests.

2013 marks Kill Kare's 6th rental season. For two years in a row - based on many favorable guest reviews - we have been rated "Excellent" and "Top Vacation Rental" for 2011 and 2012 from TripAdvisor and FlipKey.

Come sit on the porch and let the sound of gently lapping waves soothe your soul as your cares just slip away. This is lakeside living at its best. Join us!

Area Information

Just minutes away from our mile-long private drive are breath-taking maritime views along Maine's Down East rock-bound coast with quaint fishing villages, inviting gift shops, first-class restaurants, art galleries, book stores, artist colonies, antique shops, local farmers’ markets and superb seafood freshly caught from the cold Maine waters.

Kill Kare is a perfect base from which to explore the beauty that is Maine and the scenic towns and areas along the nearby coast: Blue Hill, Deer Isle, Stonington, Castine, Cape Rosier, Camden, Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor, Northeast Harbor and Southwest Harbor.

We have created an extensive online Renter's Guide that is available to guests and includes all kinds of information about the cottage, it's history, driving directions, contact information, and loads of suggestions for what to do and see, what to hike and climb and where to shop and eat in the area. It is a wonderful resource that guests refer to frequently. There will be a hard copy of this information when you arrive at the cottage.

I look forward all year long to the soothing I know my soul will receive at Kill Kare - still, I believe, one of the most beautiful places on Earth.

Stunning sunsets, the smell of balsam and the cry of loons...and I never had to leave the porch! Kill Kare embraced me from the moment I walked in the door. It is inviting, rich in history and has the best and biggest fireplace I have ever had the pleasure of falling asleep in front of. The location is unbeatable - sitting right on the lake but just minutes from the salt water and great hiking trails. The Larson's warmth and generous spirit were the icing on the cake!

Kill Kare Kamp is heavenly and it has been a real treat to get to know you and your family. Thank you for a memorable week.

If this isn't heaven on earth, it has to be close!!

A perfect two weeks. Thank you so much for this place we love returning to and that our kids are growing up in every summer....With so much affection - can't wait till next year...

Thank you for this absolutely outstanding experience. Your house is beautiful and so special! Absolutely loved everything about it.

Never in our wildest dreams did we imagine such a beautiful place! We feel very blessed to have had the opportunity to visit Maine and experience such peace. Thank you, Cathy and Dan, for your warm hospitality...Will hopefully bring the entire clan next year!

What an incredible week - from the amazing house to the big dipper to seeing the bald eagle - time got away from us and we had a trip of a lifetime!...We had never experienced a lake house before and this was a wonderful retreat. Enjoyed every minute! Thanks to Cathy and Dan - so grateful for the time spent with our family and friends.

A lovely home! Clearly many happy memories have been made here - thank you for helping me make my own.

Eight people were introduced to Walker Pond and Kill Kare on this trip and it was a great experience for all of us. This is truly a gem of a home. Cathy, thanks so much for everything and I hope that Kill Kare "kontinues" on for years to come.

Enjoyed every minute of this beautiful place - thank you for sharing it with us. We're happy to be part of the Kill Kare Kamp "family". And to future guests - I highly suggest laying on the dock at night and watching the spectacular starry sky.

This was an amazing and unforgettable week. Thank you for sharing this beautiful home and its history with us!

Great time! Always loved Maine, but never quit like this...Thanks Kill Kare - a time not to forget!!

Just wonderful!! Truly the best house we've had - and we've had many. All my "kares" are washed away.

Simply lovely, warm, beautiful! I am a little girl back in my grandparents' camp but better. Thank you for sharing this grand house (home) with us and for your impeccable attention to detail!!!

Great time! The cottage lived up to all of our expectations. Thanks for the memories!

Enjoyed our time with old friends and new friends and seeing the beautiful sights. Perfect vacation!

This is such a special place - great for relaxing and restoration...The idyllic setting made everything more special. The sounds - of the waves lapping, of the loons and of the quiet - will remain etched in my memory. Thank you.

If you love Maine, as we all do, there is no better place in the state - maybe eve the world - to be than at Kill Kare Kamp. There is everything and more to sustain, soothe, enlighten and entertain come rain or shine. The little saying gracing the table in the living room says it best: "How beautiful it is to do nothing and then rest afterwards." Thank you, Cathy, for letting our family and friends become a wee part of the history of the truly magical Kill Kare Kamp.

Kill Kare has proven to be an ideal place for our family and the annual reunion to gather. its history and peaceful setting on Walker Pond was perfect for evenings on the porch, gathering inside around a cozy fire and just talking amongst ourselves about our history in this area. We saw the resident bald eagle, the family of otters and the loons on the Pond. This place has so much to offer. Thanks for letting us share this beautiful spot which your family has maintained on Walker Pond.

Words cannot express how much this week has meant to me. We'll be back!

Most wonderful, cozy, beautiful, fun place with good friends and a great "landlady".

Loved the loons and eagles. Loved the porch. Loved the lake. Loved everything!

What a great place! I'd never been to this part of the US before and I can't wait to come back!! Loved every minute of everything!!

We all agreed that our time here was just what the doctor ordered! We spent almost all of our time on the amazing porch reading, talking, eating and listening to the loons. Our golden retriever LOVED the lake, the porch and the dock. None of us wants to leave and only wish we could stay longer...Thanks for a wonderful stay. We're already thinking about our stay here next year.

From lobsters and drinks with Cathy to exploring Acadia National Park - and everything in between - our stay at Kill Kare Kamp has been magical. The history of the house is fascinating and Cathy tells it with the pride it deserves. It has been fantastic to spend a week relaxing, eating and most importantly, making a wonderful new friend. Looking forward to returning.

Thank you so much! I have loved every moment of our time at Kill Kare. It is the perfect spot for a family reunion. In fact, I am already looking forward to next year!
