Description of the Sewanee vacation cottage rental
Red Oak Hollow is just a short drive to the center of The University of the South campus. Enjoy your day on campus and come back to a tranquil mountain retreat. The garden cottage is part of our 30 acres private estate of hardwood trees, fantastic native and butterfly gardens, ponds stocked with catfish, bass and brim, entertaining wildlife and picture perfect wildflowers.
As owners, we live on the property and maintain the cottage and gardens. If you have a question, need directions, looking for a recommendation for hiking or dining, we are here to help.
The cottage is just shy of 1,000 sq feet, with a large living room, complete kitchen, two bedrooms, and a very large bathroom. Each room of the air conditioned cottage is decorated with a country or mountain inspiration. Why rent a couple of motel rooms, when you can have the comfort of a private home on an estate, for a better price?
The cottage has two bedrooms, each with traditional quilts. For your maximum sleep comfort, a King size sleep number bed is featured in the "Wildflower" Master Bedroom. This room is decorated with local wildflower photos and 2 tiffany styled lamps. The second “The Fox and Fish" bedroom has a set of bunk beds. For privacy and relaxation, each bedroom has a TV.
The large living room has a dual reclining couch, a reclining chair and an upholstered rocking chair. The 30” TV has premium satellite programming. Current popular magazine are on the end tables. Bird and flower books are in the bookcase. A DVD/CD/VCR player is in the living room, along with movies for both children and adult viewing.
The "Red Chicken Kitchen" seats four and comes complete with a full size refrigerator, electric stove, oven dishwasher, microwave, coffee pot, blender, toaster and a full set of dinnerware, dishes, wine opener, pots and pans. The kitchen has a bay window with a garden view. The kitchen is perfect if you wanted to invite your college student for a home cooked meal. The front porch has a propane barbecue. A full size washing machine and dryer complete your needs.
The bathroom is surprisingly large with dual vanities, a separate shower and large soaking tub.
Red Oak Hollow is very kid friendly. For the very little ones, we have an available high chair and playpen. For toddlers, the back yard is fenced in.
The estate has a 20 ft wide hiking trail thru the woods, past the fox dens and springs, down to a pasture and around the ponds. It’s an easy 20 minute walk, so be sure to bring comfortable shoes.
Kids love to fish, especially if they are biting. Bring your poles. Red Oak Hollow only allows Catch and Release, but the sport and tranquility offers ample rewards.
There is a large fire pit with seating down by the ponds. Toast a marshmallow or just enjoy the fire one evening. We supply the kindling and firewood.
When you visit us, you can feel and live the country life.
The pond attracts ducks, cranes and our returning pair of Canadian geese. Wildlife is a way of life here.

A relaxing fall getaway
November 6, 2012
We stayed four days, three nights at Red Oak Hollow and were very impressed. The cabin is very clean, the property is incredible, and the property owners are very kind and straightforward to deal with. We brought all our own food and cooked there every night, using some of the herbs and produce from the garden right outside the back door. The bed is a sleep number and is EXTREMELY comfortable! We loved that we were able to bring our well mannered old dog and enjoy a vacation with him. If you are looking for a relaxing getaway, this is it!

Quality and Cleanliness
June 30, 2012
This was the second time I have stayed at the cottage. I will always stay there when I visit the Sewanee Summer Music Festival. I have diet restrictions and I love being able to cook my meals in a well-stocked kitchen. The views are beautiful. I sleep in dreamy linens. I prepare my meals and eat on fantastic cookware and dishes. My family loves the walks around the lake and through the forest. We even saw an armadillo on our walk this last time. Staying at the cottage is a home away from home mixed with a vacation experience. There is so much to do on the mountain.
Owner's reply:
Jane,
It's always a pleasure to see your delightful family again. The musical talents of your daughter, playing cello was an added treat for us.
We are still looking for the armadillo trio you saw in our woods. We wonder if they were just here for
the week-end.
Please stay again when you plan to be back in Sewanee.

Nothing Laborious about this Labor Day Weekend!
September 8, 2011
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Red Oak Hollow. The guest suites were handsomely furnished and very well equipped to meet our every need for cooking, eating, sleeping and most of all- relaxing! Our hosts were cordial and so helpful in giving us ideas about what to do in the area along with providing us with maps and brochures. We enjoyed walking on the property, sitting on the front porch surrounded by hummingbirds and a tour of the newest endeavor, mushroom farming. We even left with some tasty mushrooms for home! I would highly recommend staying at Red Oak Hollow.

Best way to relax!
July 26, 2011
My husband and I really enjoyed our stay at Red Oak Hollow. The accomodations were perfect. The kitchen was outfitted with everything we needed, the bed was amazingly comfortable, the wildlife was fun to watch, and the hosts made several good suggestions for local dining and places to hike and shop in Sewanee. If are headed to Sewanee, or the University of the South, you should definitely check out Red Oak Hollow.

Best place to stay in Sewanee!
March 30, 2011
My father recently stayed at Red Oak Hollow and had a wonderful experience. His guestroom was spotless and extremely comfortable. The grounds at Red Oak Hollow are phenomenal and he had a view of two lakes from his guestroom. I would highly recommend Red Oak Hollow to anyone considering staying in the Sewanee area!

Relaxing and romantic
March 29, 2011
We visited Red Oak to celebrate our 6th anniversary. It was the first time away from our kids (3 & 1) since our last anniversary and we were looking for a relaxing alternative to a hotel. The cottage couldn't have been better. Thunderstorms kept us inside much of the time, but we did get the opportunity to take a few walks around the beautiful grounds and into town. Mostly, we just relaxed. The tub in the bathroom is AMAZING. It was exactly what we were looking for for our anniversary, we felt like we were on our honeymoon again. We hope to go back soon.

Relaxing peaceful retreat
March 20, 2011
My husband and I spent several fall weekends in Oct 2009 & 2010 at Red Oak Hollow visiting our son who played soccer at Univ of the South in Sewanee. We appreciated the quiet peaceful beauty there and our gracious hosts. The place was always clean and nicely decorated, but what I liked most was being able to sit quietly on the patio,on the bench by the pond, or in the hammock listening to the sounds of the birds in the morning and watching the squirrels chasing each other and the deer passing through along the ponds. The colorful leaves in the fall reflected beautifully on the pond. I would love to visit in spring to see all the flowers, too, and hope to visit then, too, one day. I enjoy seeing what is current there on the owner's blog. The owners are very helpful and interesting to talk with. I especially enjoy their little dogs. We also enjoyed using the grill to cook and then eating outside. The campus at the Univ. of the South is very beautiful and unique, and there are several nearby excellent places to eat, as well as numerous hiking opportunities. I can highly recommend a visit to Red Oak Hollow.

ROMANCE and TRANQUILITY
March 3, 2011
Red Oak Hollow proved to be the most exceptional getaway for my sweetheat and me!!!...The most beautiful, serene setting with the most friendly and gracious owners! The cottage accommodation could not have been more perfect--from the exceptional cleanliness, size and comfortability with all the amenities of a home away from home!!! We so enjoyed our privacy while exploring the complete estate, to our romantic cottage! And so very thankful for all the area information the owners so graciously provided us, for exploration of the area surrounding Sewanee. We will definitely return!!! Don't miss your opportunity to experience Red Oak Hollow!!!

Great retreat!
April 22, 2010
This place is wonderful! We slept with the windows open and listened to the wind and the birds. Bluebirds and goldfinches practically swarmed the cabin and ruby crowned kinglets and titmouse were there, too. I liked hearing the red-winged blackbirds while fishing at the pond and the sound of the meadowlarks when we biked down the road. Nice rocking chairs on the porch.....great for resting after bike-riding the hills! Would definitely go back. Owners (and their dogs) are really friendly!
Owner Supplied Testimonials

This place is a godsend for Sewanee alums travelling with young kids. Mesha had a perfectly clean high chair and portable crib all set up for our baby when we arrived. We had all the amenities a young family could want -- a short hiking trail, two ponds with catfish and bass who like to be fed or caught and released by young fishermen, a well-stocked kitchen, washer and dryer, a separate TV / VCR combo with kid's movies in the bedroom with the bunkbeds, and a huge bathroom with soaking tub for mom to relax after chasing the kids around all day. Tim amd Mesha are wonderful hosts - friendly and welcoming to children as well as adults, and go out of their way to make sure their guests are comfortable. My 8 year old enjoyed our visit so much that he is already begging me to bring him back.
Just wanted to thank you for another wonderful stay; just wish it could have been longer. I love the beauty, peace and quiet there. The new room and patio are great ! I agree with all on your blog. I am really looking forward to our 2 stays in Oct and will surely miss them when Matt has graduated. But I will know where to stay when back in the area.
I just caught up with all on your blog and really enjoyed it. I like being able to see what is going on there and hearing what is new in the area. - Thanks again, Carol
