Description of the Sewanee vacation cottage rental
Let Red Oak Hollow be “Your Sewanee Home away from Home." It’s been called "The best kept secret on the mountain."
Located in Sewanee, Red Oak Hollow is just a short drive to the center of The University of the South campus. Enjoy your day on campus and come back to a tranquil mountain retreat. The garden cottage is part of our 30 acres private estate of hardwood trees, fantastic native and butterfly gardens, ponds stocked with catfish, bass and brim, entertaining wildlife and picture perfect wildflowers.
Numerous photos of the flowers, wildlife and cottage are posted on our blog.
Do you like to fish? Would the kids like to go for a canoe ride on the largest of our three private ponds?
As owners, we live on the property and maintain the cottage and gardens.
If you have a question, need directions, looking for a recommendation for hiking or dining, we are here to help.
The cottage is just shy of 1,000 sq feet, with a large living room, complete kitchen, two bedrooms, and a very large bathroom. Each room of the air conditioned cottage is decorated with a country or mountain inspiration.
The cottage has two bedrooms, each with traditional quilts. For your maximum sleep comfort, a King size sleep number bed is featured in the "Wildflower” Master Bedroom". This room is decorated with local wildflower photos and tiffany styled lamps. The second “The Fox and Fish" bedroom has a set of bunk beds. For privacy and relaxation, each bedroom has a TV.
The large living room has a dual reclining couch, a reclining chair and an upholstered rocking chair. The 30” TV has premium satellite programming, including Showtime. Current popular magazine are on the end tables. Bird and flower books are in the bookcase. A DVD/CD/VCR player is in the living room, along with movies for both children and adult viewing.
The "Red Chicken Kitchen" seats four and comes complete with a full size refrigerator, electric stove, oven dishwasher, microwave, coffee pot, blender, toaster and a full set of dinnerware, dishes, wine opener, pots and pans. The kitchen has a bay window with a garden view. The kitchen is perfect if you wanted to invite your college student for a home cooked meal. The front porch has a propane barbecue. A full size washing machine and dryer complete your needs.
The bathroom is surprisingly large with dual vanities, a separate shower and large soaking tub.
Red Oak Hollow is very kid friendly. For the very little ones, we have an available high chair and playpen.
For toddlers or small dogs, the back yard is fenced in.
The video collection has classic cartoons and animations.
If you are up for a game of Parcheesi or Monopoly you’ll find a vintage set.
You can easily keep an eye on the kids playing horse shoes, while rocking in one of the front porch rockers. The estate has a 10 ft wide hiking trail thru the woods, past the fox dens and springs, down to a pasture and around the ponds. It’s an easy 25 minute walk, so be sure to bring comfortable shoes.
We will consider small well trained friendly dogs. The cottage has a “cat size” dog door which leads to the fenced in back yard. There is a twenty five dollar fee for pets.
We hope to be your “Sewanee home away from Home”
Kids love to fish, especially if they are biting. Bring your poles. Join in on the fishing fun or relax on the two park style benches and watch the kids catch the big one.
Red Oak Hollow only allows Catch and Release, but the sport and tranquility offers ample rewards.
There is a large fire pit with seating down by the ponds. Toast a marshmallow or just enjoy the fire on a cool summer’s evening. We supply the kindling and firewood.
When you visit us, you can feel and live country life. A strawberry patch is just 50 feet from the cottage front porch. Wild blackberries and wild blueberries bushes will be pointed out and their picking is worth the effort.
As a Master Gardener, we have created numerous gardens throughout the estate. A raised bed vegetable garden is in the back yard of the cottage. Go ahead, pick a cherry tomato or snip some sweet basil for your salad.
The flower garden nearest the cottage is the Butterfly Garden, filled with sun drops, butterfly weed, butterfly bush, coneflowers, and pineapple sage. Another garden bed lines the cottage yard, featuring the Southern “Bird Girl”. It is full of Shasta daisy, dahlia, hollyhock and stargazer lilies.
There are two large native gardens, highlighted by spring daffodils, trilliums and the “elusive Cinderella of the wild flower world”, pink lady’s slippers.
The flowering trees are plentiful with dogwoods, crepe myrtle, crap apple and red bud.
The “Gnome’s Home Garden” is down inspiration hill and it’s set off by it‘s beauty and privacy. Numerous forest gnomes tend this one particular garden. It has a twin size iron bed filled with Dutch Iris and Alliums and seems to attract their attention and perhaps yours. There is a quaint café table setting in this garden to enjoy its crescent shape bed filled with daylily, azalea, roses, mallows and hibiscus.
We have a bluebird trail, with seven blue bird houses, usually occupied. One box has a reoccurring chickadee tenant. The eggs are spotted pink and the nest is far superior and softer than the bluebirds. You can carefully open the bluebird boxes to view the eggs or babies.
The property is home to a resident winter to mid summer Red Fox family. After the kits are grown they move away, yet one always seems to return. We are not sure if it’s the mother or daughter. Seeing the fox, is simply “Bon Chance”. But if you do, she is a beauty.
The pond attracts ducks, cranes and our returning pair of Canadian geese. We feed them, so they do stick around for dinner. Wildlife is a way of life here.
Franklin-Marion State Forest is a short walk from Red Oak Hollow. It has miles of numerous trails for hikers and horseback riders. The best hike is from the forest ranger’s headquarters to Tom Pack Falls, 2 miles with abundant wild azalea and Catesby’s trillium.
