Description of the Shelter Island vacation home rental

rebuilt from 2004 - 2006, this 1890 victorian - with exquisite attention to detail and fixtures - is located in the historic district of shelter island heights. within walking distance to the north ferry (and greenport, with train/bus service to nyc) and the town of shelter island heights, this summer home features a wide wrap-around front porch with breezes and water view, and comes with membership to the heights beach club, a five minute walk.

with two en-suite master bedrooms, a second floor single bedroom, and a third floor bonus/away/yoga/bedroom, the house is open, airy, clean, and spacious, blending indoor and outdoor spaces. though it's appearance may have a somewhat formal feel, past guests have consistently remarked about how comfortable, relaxed and easy the house is, with a very good 'vibe'.

the first floor features a bay-windowed living room opening onto the front porch on one side and dining room on the other. the large, open and airy chef's kitchen with miele appliances, works great for multiple cooks and opens onto a sunny back porch and yard - complete with an antique glider for lazy afternoon naps! there is a hot/cold outdoor shower for rinses after the beach or evening bathing under the stars.

the house comes with 3 bicycles, beach chairs, coolers and umbrella. for extended stays, cleaning service can be arranged.

this house was designed with relaxation, comfort and ease in mind. in the words of a past guest 'it feels like we were staying at a five star hotel and spa'.

the house is available weekends may, june and july, as the home next door will be under renovation during the week. the renovation does not impede upon the visual privacy of this house. the weekend is considered a 3 night rental. we will be available for full week and weekend rentals during the month of august.

Area Description

though it is only 100 miles from new york city, it feels like 1000! shelter island is a unique, eight-square mile paradise the native americans called 'an island sheltered by islands' because of it's position between the north and south forks of eastern long island within the great peconic bay. access is provided by a 10 minute car-ferry ride from either greenport to the north, or north haven (sag harbor) to the south.

it has recently gained popularity as the 'un-hampton', offering a laid-back attitude, along with the best eastern long island has to offer. there is easy access to the sound beaches and vineyards of the north fork, the ocean beaches and trendy havens of the hamptons, and the wild beauty of montauk.

shelter island heights is a designated historic district featuring fine victorian homes, mostly built at the end of the 19th century. with hilltop water views to southold and beyond to connecticut, it is a walking and biking neighborhood: 5 minutes to the shops and restaurants of shelter island heights, and the ferry to greenport, with train and bus service to nyc.

on the island, many noted restaurants offer fine dining, people watching and star sightings: vine street cafe, planet bliss, and sunset beach resort to name a few - the latter with a vibe and nightlife reminiscent of the south of france or st. barths.

there are many beautiful sandy bay beaches (rental of the house's jeep includes a beach sticker, or a weekly beach sticker can be purchased for a nominal cost) - either populated or islolated - and a fresh water pond, while the ocean beaches of sagaponack are a 20 minute drive away - a multitude of swimming and bathing options.

the island also offers kayak rentals, where one can explore the many inlets and creeks, as well as a deserted island! there is a 4th of july fireworks display on crescent beach (aka sunset beach) which is reminiscent of small town america: crowds picnic on the beach, with boats moored in the harbor - both cheering or honking approval of the display.

additionally, 1/3rd of the island is owned by the nature conservancy. called mashomack preserve, there are hiking trails of varying lengths, with wildlife and views that will take your breath away.

how can it be that a place, relatively close to new york city, can be safe enough to leave the house doors unlocked and the keys in the car while you're at the grocery store?

truly a sheltered island.

within walking distance to shelter island heights: restaurants, shops, food markets, flowers, antiques, hardware, pharmacy etc. walk to the ferry, cross for 2.00 to greenport, with movie theater, more restaurants, shops, antiques, etc.
