A lovely place to celebrate the end of summer.

September 11, 2012

Our family spent our vacation on beautiful quiet Nabby Cove watching eagles and lobster boats on the Kegg river. What a wonderful place to introduce our granddaughters to midcoast Maine. The house was on the water so we spent our time watching the sea birds and collecting sea treasures at the beach.

Beware Nabby Cove Retreat

July 21, 2012

While the view is great, the accommodations are not. And, after we did thorough cleaning, including cleaning the refrigerator shelves, the owner kept a $100 deposit (in the contract) for "cleaning" that she said was needed. (She expects the house to be clean for the next renters.) I’ve rented in the area for 12 years and have never had an issue with cleaning or having any part of my deposit not returned because I clean beyond what is expected. The home is pieced together on different levels with odd nooks and crannies. The lower level, the living room with overstuffed, old furniture, is musty, moldy and smells of dog. There are no lamps for reading, only overhead lights for the entire room. We spent 1 hour in the room in the entire week. There is 1 tiny nook off the stairs from the lower level with a 2-seater couch and a lamp. Yes, a lamp for reading! Other than that, nothing. No lamps, no easy or not so easy chairs, even in the bedrooms. On the main level there is a very nice dining area, and a kitchen area with a counter with stools that are too tall for the counter. Basics such as sugar for coffee in the morning were lacking. There was a half roll of toilet paper in one of the bathrooms (and one roll in another). The access road to the place was significantly rutted, with the very real possibly of denting your oil tank if you drove incorrectly. The website picture showed a hammock and Adirondack chairs down by the water. These were not there when we visited. There were 3 metal upright deck chairs which we could carry down to the lawn if we wanted to be closer to the water. There was a problem with the well, which necessitated showering 30 minutes apart, thus making us staggering our wake-up times to make sure we could all shower before we left in the morning. The water was exceptionally strong with iron and the owner complained that there was a yellow stain (from rust) on one of her face towels so she charged us for that because she couldn't use it again. (There were rust stains in the toilets, on our nails, our hair-which is the case with wells.) With the living room taken away, there no chairs to sit in upstairs so we took in 2 available outside chairs from the back deck to read at night. All in all not a good visit. There are plenty of other places which are comfortable inside as well as outside. An unfortunate experience overall. The $100 charge for the cleaning was shocking, unwarranted and absurd.
