Area Information
Your first glimpse of St. Simons Island is across the celebrated Marshes of Glynn, made famous by Poet Sidney Lanier. Called "the nursery of the sea," these natural treasures are the birthplace of much of our sea life.
The Pier Village anchors the south end of the Island and is the social hub of the Island for many visitors. The St. Simons Lighthouse and Museum, Neptune Park with its oceanside playground, an oak shaded picnic area, fishing pier, miniature golf course, public library and community theatre all are located in "The Village". This is also the location of the St. Simons Visitors Center, open daily 9am-5pm. Breathtaking views of the St. Simons Sound meet you at every turn.
We encourage you to explore our magical Island. St. Simons offers some of the best shopping and dining options on the Southern Coast as well as a natural beauty that encourages quiet reflection. Take a leisurely kayak trip through the marshes , explore miles of walking and bike paths or head out for a day at the beach. We also offer several public tennis courts and 99 holes of unparalleled golf as well as fishing charters, sailboat rentals and nature tours.
For history buffs, The Fort Frederica National Monument offers a unique look into the lives of Georgia's founder, James Edward Oglethorpe and his colony established on St. Simons Island in 1736. Today the monument is an archaeological site preserved and maintained by the National Park Service. Visitors can tour the ruins of the town where each foundation has been researched and identified, complemented with maps, photographs, sketches and artifacts.
The St. Simons Island Lighthouse is one of the most accessible lighthouses in the country. It is one of only five surviving light towers in Georgia. Visitors are invited to climb the 129 steps for a breathtaking view of St. Simons and out to sea as far as Cumberland Island.
Christ Church, Frederica, one of St. Simons' most popular sites, is the second oldest Episcopal church in Georgia and the third oldest in the country. The churchyard grounds are spectacular, especially in the springtime. The cemetery is the resting place of many of the Island's earliest and most notable residents. Across the street a Celtic Cross monument with gardens celebrates the works of the Wesley brothers.
We hope your days with us will be picture postcard perfect. And remember the old saying, "Once you get St. Simons sand in your shoes, you will return to the Island again and again!" Have a wonderful stay!
