Winter paradise

February 2, 2015

Don't think twice! Get to Sunnyhill now! It's a gorgeous place, and the surrounding vistas are so beautiful and peaceful you won't believe your luck! Me and my girlfriend went there with our dog just as Juno snowstorm was starting to approach NYC, and had a wonderful time hiding from the blizzard in our cozy retreat. Great attention and all the commodities in a secluded, perfect piece of paradise. Can't wait to go back!!

George J. Robinson

Owner's reply:

Wow! Mary and I are very impressed by Simon's enthusiastic review! (It almost reads like Madison Avenue ad agency copy, but we assure you that it is unsolicited and authentically the passionate feelings of a first-time guest.)

We're pleased that this couple found our cottage to be the cozy sanctuary they sought from the anticipated discomfort associated with the forecast blizzard, Juno, and we're heartened by Simon's intention to return. Perhaps in future they'll choose a warmer season.

The Best Vacation!

August 27, 2013

Had the greatest time here on Sunny Hill, lots to do within a 30-40 mile radius, just outside of the Catskills National Park! Beautiful scenery all around the home and neighborhood. It was a nice, peaceful, relaxing spot to vacation.

George J. Robinson

Owner's reply:

Mary & I were very pleased to host this vigorous young couple who drove such a distance to stay at SunnyHill & make the most of the area's innumerable opportunities for mountain cllimbing & hiking along little used, unulating, scenic roads through bucolic dairy country here at the headwaters of the Delawre R.
That they said their time at SunnyHill was their " vacation ever!" is most gratifying & encourages us to continue to give our guests the five star experience they desire & expect.

Serene Retreat

May 14, 2013

SunnyHill provides a delightful getaway. George, our host, was most attentive and obviously really cares that his guests have an excellent experience. We enjoyed the bucolic setting, the stillness, the panoramic views, the stars, the S’mores, and the nearby hikes. SunnyHill creatively provides a maximum amount of livability in a minimum of square-footage. The loft with its skylight is cozy, and the foldout bed on the main level is very comfortable. We cooked all of our meals at SunnyHill, and found the kitchenette to be efficient and well-equipped. The light-filled living & dining area is comfortable and provides a panoramic view of meadows, mountains, and a nearby pond. George provides a wealth of literature on the region and on local activities. In addition, he makes himself available for any questions or suggestions regarding SunnyHill, places to eat, or things to do. A bookcase of children’s books and games makes SunnyHill’s younger guests feel welcome. I’d recommend this cottage for a couple, a small family, or four really good friends. Although it’s a long way from home, we’d love to return for another stay at SunnyHill.

George J. Robinson

Owner's reply:

We're so pleased to host guests from North Carolina (our second couple this yr.), because they've shown us that Southerners' reputation for "charm" is well-founded.

Rosalyn and her West Point Cadet son, Daniel - the principal attraction of her long drive from NC - were such a pleasure to host that Mary and I do hope Rosalyn, and, next time, her husband, will return to SunnyHill for Daniel's graduation and promotion to First Lieutenant.

We appreciate their enumeration of SH's many assets.

Great place for a getaway

March 25, 2013

Even though we booked at last minute (1 day before our arrival), everything was ready by the time we got to the cabin. The place is wonderful - relaxing scenery, wonderful surroundings and so quiet, just perfect if you want to recharge your batteries. It snowed almost all the time we've been there, which made everything look like a wonderland. The cabin is small, but spacious, the fireplace is very romantic and the neighbor's dogs are so cute. We had a blast those 5 days, having enough time to relax, spend quality time together and gather our thoughts. George, the owner is a wonderful man, warm and happy. We can't wait to go back!!

George J. Robinson

Owner's reply:

For our family, Mary, my wife and co-owner-host, and our son, Evan (soon a teenager!), SunnyHill is not principally a business, it is an integral and important part of our social lives; it is via SunnyHill that we have an opportunity to meet so many wonderful people, many of them young professionals, and increasingly we host guests from abroad, or, as in the case of Vio (Schuster), her husband, Eduard, and their friends, Cosmin (MD) and Dana (also Mr. & Mrs.)*, people who have not long ago immigrated from far and wide, in Vio's groups' case, from Romania. Not only do our guests support the business end, but they enrich our lives through our conversations, which range across many interesting subjects, e.g., when we learn what a guest's profession is and what it is like to do that type of work.

Since I had been to Romania, and given their keen interest in their host's experiences, we had much to talk about. Their staying with us served an educational purpose as well: e.g., I learned how to correctly say the name of their country: [pron.] "Roman-ee-ya."

We are proud to have earned this five-star review** from such discriminating (also friendly, responsible, mature, considerate) guests, and grateful for their patronage. Best of all testimonials is their expressed intention to return- "We can't wait to go back!" - !thereby joining the growing SunnyHill "Family," i.e., the number of returning, guests. When they do return, these two young married couples are assured of a warm, "family" reception and the attention to their needs and desires that they deserve.

*We will soon be posting a photo of the couples on this and the other sites on which SunnyHill is included.
** To date, Mary and I are proud to state that we have earned a total of 24 reviews, all five-star (i.e., maximum) since SunnyHill opened on November 7, 2010.

Perfect romantic getaway, exactly as advertised!

August 20, 2012

We booked Sunnyhill looking for a quiet and romantic retreat away from the hectic nature of city life. What we got was exactly what we wanted! From the moment we arrived to the moment we left, everything we needed was provided for at the cottage. George was extremely helpful in giving us a thorough orientation of the cottage and its surrounding land. George and Mary provided extensive reading material (including maps and guidebooks) as well, which helped us learn more about the Catskill region and make the most of our vacation. George even suggested a few attractions for us to visit which were all beautiful! The cottage was stocked with every necessity. The kitchen for instance included every piece of cutlery and appliance you could ever need. Best of all, the cottage was immaculately clean and very cozy. We stayed in the middle of August and the heat was not a problem at all. The breeze coming in from outside, coupled with the ceiling fan, made the cottage a perfect sleeping temperature. The surrounding land was delightful. We even saw a family of deer outside the window one evening! George and Mary, as well as the surrounding residents, provided the perfect level of privacy we were looking for. It truly felt like a secluded mountain retreat. As far as entertainment, Sunnyhill’s Direct TV satellite service was perfect. It provided more channels than we would ever need! While there is no internet access at the cottage, Stamford (an easy 5-minute drive) has a library with free wifi. The town itself is also a lovely place to visit for an afternoon. Overall, we loved the place and would definitely consider coming back and recommending it to friends and family!

A wonderful experience!

August 3, 2012

My recent 2-week stay at the SunnyHill Sumer Retreat was an absolute delight. Hosts Mary and George (and son, Evan) were warm, gracious and highly accommodating. In reading through the entries in the visitor log, one can see that SunnyHill has become personally meaningful to a variety of guests in different ways. The house was charming and comfortable. For me, in addition to some much needed R&R, I especially savored the view from the front deck, the sweet country air, and the way the skies moved toward the house from the distant mountains. Although I enjoyed feeling so comfortably tucked away atop the country road, there were also many sites to see and places to visit. Toward that end, there is a sizeable library of books, maps and brochures to peruse right in the house - and George and Mary were always available for suggestions and assistance. Heartfelt thanks to the Robinsons. I am already beginning to look forward to next summer.

Owner's reply:

Mary and I are thrilled that in addition to guests originating in the US, SunnyHill is attracting and serving guests from abroad. We're proud that worldly visitors leave with such a positive impression of their stay here.

Great getaway!

August 15, 2011

This was our first annual women's weekend for four friends and me, and it was WONDERFUL!!! We brought all of our own food, so the kitchen was a must, and it had everything we needed! The house is adorable, and all of us were perfectly comfortable. We all enjoyed ourselves tremendously, and can't wait to come back next year!

This is a wonderful place....

June 4, 2011

This is a wonderful place. It is so peaceful, surrounded by beautiful, rural, views. The house is cosy with everything you need for a very comfortable stay, including a verandah and barbecue. There are quiet country lanes and abundant wild life all around. If, like us, you enjoy hiking there are great walks from Stamford, in the nearby State Parks and, of course you can just stroll along deserted roads right outside your door. Shops, restaurants and supermarkets are in the friendly little town of Stamford- a ten minute drive away. The booking and payment arrangements were entirely trouble free, which is always a bit of a bonus when booking from overseas. George, the owner, is the perfect host. He is friendly, helpful and full of useful suggestions to increase the enjoyment of your stay. Nothing is too much trouble for him. All this advice was most welcome given that this was our first stay in this area. We unreservedly recommend this excellent holiday home in an area that, from a UK perspective at least, is a real hidden gem. Thanks George for your hospitality and for a great holiday.

What an experience!

April 14, 2011

The house was absolutely beautiful. What the pictures cannot perfectly illustrate is how spacious and comfortable it is. George and Mary have clearly thought through everything their guests might need. The stove not only lends the home a homey (or romantic) feel on a chilly night, but keeps it just warm enough (both on the main level and in the loft). The views are absolutely spectacular and there are so many ways to enjoy them! The many windows look out over the beautiful catskills - you get the sunset and the sun rise easily visible from inside the house. There's a patio area for warmer mornings with coffee and a book and evenings for grilling. Unfortunately, we didn't get a chance to experience much of Stamford itself due to a horrendous rental car incident that forced us to be tied to the phone for a huge part of our Saturday (when we had been planning a long hike). However, as is clear from the other reviews, George came to the rescue and was a phenomenal friend (and I can't thank him enough for this!). He drove us, counseled us, and checked in on us throughout the weekend to make sure that we weren't helpless. His hospitality is truly unmatched. Sunny Hill is clearly not just a business to him - the place (and it's owners) make you feel at home. The experience is very personal and makes you want to come back again!

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What are the most fun things to do at SunnyHill?
A: There are innumerable seasonal activities available nearby and within a day trip, the choice only dependent upon our guests' interests. SunnyHill has an extensive collection of brochures and tourist maps to facilitate activity planning. Among the most popular: all varieties of winter sports at the area's 4 ski resorts (all of which also offer off-season activities as well); hiking/trekking, mountain climbing; mountain-bike riding, horseback riding, bicycle touring, motor touring, relaxing under a tree on SunnyHill's private 6 acres, bird & wildlife watching, swimming at village pool, museum-historic site touring, etc.
Q: What makes SunnyHill special?
A: For one thing, our A-frame cottage's configuration is a welcome change from the typical segregated rectangular-room, maze-like layout of the typical house/apartment from which our guests have likely just departed, in need of a different kind of experience. Our "Great Room" and open loft enables our guests to enjoy a common experience and fosters companionship. Another offering unique to SunnyHill (even if we do say so ourselves [though this claim is supported by our exclusively five-star reviews] ) is the friendliness, kindness, thoughtfulness and attentiveness of its owner-hosts, Mary and George, and their Property Manager, Bruce. Cottage and land notwithstanding, the relationship between guests and host can make or break a vacation experience, and SunnyHill's guests routinely cite their experience with their hosts as one of the reasons they award SunnyHill with five-star (maximum) reviews and why they become repeat guests.
Q: Why is SunnyHill a good value?
A: We've done our homework; we've compared SunnyHill's offering: cottage itself+cleanliness-hygiene+private 6 acres+varied flora (meadows & woods) & fauna+peace-&-quiet, far off little-used albeit well-maintained dirt road+views+proximity to 4 ski resorts & historic & amusement sights+amenities+24-7 very friendly, accommodating, & considerate-of-guests' privacy service availability) with area lodging of the same type ("whole-house" vs. motel, lodge, etc.) and thus know that our guests are receiving at least as much, and in cases more, for their money than area comparables offer.
Q: Guest-Owner relationships are important: with what type of owner-hosts will we be dealing?
A: Co-host couple, Mary and George, are both post-graduate-educated parents of a 12 year old, Evan. Their principal residence is in Manhattan, however since 2003 they've owned their own vacation house only 1/8 mile from SunnyHill. Thus, they are very familiar with SunnyHill's rural area, as well as familiar with urban life consequently sensitive to SunnyHill's many urban guests' needs and concerns.
Being parents, and both having once been teachers, Mary & George anticipate (especially young) families' needs and concerns and are always mindful of children's safety.
Q: How have George & Mary provided for the anticipated & unanticipated needs of their guests?
A: SunnyHill hosts have secured the services of local, life-long resident specialists to handle special needs and to provide detailed, time-tested local information guests' require. E.g., SunnyHill's Property Manager, Mr. Bruce Rogers, is experienced in all trades involved with property mgt. and he lives only 5 miles from SunnyHill, making him readily available to respond to a guest's call for information and/or service, e.g. daily servicing and fueling the wood pellet stove.
Likewise, local contractor Jim Fensterer's snow plowing services have been contractually secured for the winter season.
