A Brief History:
In 1826, many people still referred to Boalsburg as “Springfield.” The vacant lot that settler John Hess purchased from George Boal in that year would have been recognized as the one on the corner of Pitt Street and Morris Alley. In the generations that followed, Springfield officially became Boalsburg. Pitt Street became Main and Morris Alley came to be Academy Street.
But change passed by the Hess family, who continued to occupy the same land and house until 1984. Few structures are as well documented and preserved as the Hess-Leiby-Segner House (now The Federal House), built of handmade bricks by John Hess in 1826.
The Hess family played an important role in the history of Boalsburg. John Hess was a hatter and ran a shop in a now demolished building next to the house. His land being one and one-half lots wide, he could afford the luxury of a separate building for his business, whi8le many Boalsburg merchants had their businesses in their homes. Later, one of Hess’s son-in-laws ran a broom factory in the old hat shop building after which it became the second location of the Boalsburg telephone exchange, with Hess’s great-granddaughters as the operators (and, one imagines, the best informed sources of local gossip). The structure was finally a general store before being torn down in the mid 1960’s.
Although the old shop saw many changes, the house remained virtually the same and is still today one of the best preserved examples of Boalsburg’s early architecture. It’s simply, three bay brick façade with its elegant doorway surmounted by a lunette window and flanked by a graceful Tuscan pilasters is typical of the Federal style that dominated American architecture in the first years of the 19th century.
Inside, one enters a spacious, airy foyer with its original open staircase detailed with hand carved scroll work on the stringboard. A classic foyer, the hall runs to the rear addition (now used as a kitchen) and opens into the beautiful post and beam sunroom with its walls of windows looking out to the patio and garden. It is flanked by two large, well-lighted rooms with a high ceilings and a Rumford fireplace (recently converted to gas). Original woodwork is preserved throughout the house. Among the most notable are the handmade door hardware and the beautifully refinished native white pine plank floorboards, some of which are fifteen inches wide.
With thirteen inch walls of handmade bricks baked on his land and hand hewn joists and girders, The Federal House remains as solid as ever, a treasure in historic Boalsburg.
The federal House was featured in Centre County Holiday Home, Centre Daily Times, December 2005, pages 16-18.
The King Suite is private and decorated with rich cherry furniture and has a private marble shower with heated floors. The Princess is decorated in bright yellows and inviting flowers.
