Area Description

Stockton Springs is a historic town in upper Penobscot Bay, one of the 10 top sailing bays in the world. We are approx. 6 miles from the Penobscot Narrows Bridge & Observatory and the original Fort Knox. The Observatory is the tallest in the Western Hemisphere. Stockton Springs also houses a beautiful and unusually shaped light house at Fort Point State Park, our light house is the most "inland" and most controversial light house in the U.S. and was absolutely necessary because of Penobscot Bay and the Penobscot River.

Further, we are approx. 6 miles from Sears Island, the largest uninhabited island on the East coast, where you may hike, bike, X country ski, pick a peck of clams, find sand dollars and sea glass - and just enjoy yourself in quiet contentment. And, approx. 7 miles to Maine's oldest marine museum, the Penobscot Marine Musuem with a very green campus housing 12 buildings, most on the historic register. Its a fun museum and very educational - loved by people of all ages.

We have beautiful fall foliage that normally lasts longer along the coast than in-land. 2009 promises to be good with the leaves hanging on longer due to the inordinate amount of rain we had this past spring & summer.

We are centrally located between Belfast & Bucksport, with a 35 minute drive to Bangor. Wonderful restaurants, both family & upscale, fresh foods, great antiquing, flea marketing, galleries, wineries, breweries, unique stores and the #1 rug hooking studio in the U.S. You can get to most all of Maine's great sites in easy day tours - including Bar Harbor & Acadia National Park, but you won't want to miss our very beautiful State Parks & Historic sites.

Lilac Place is highly recommended as a staging point for both sides of Penobscot Bay. The rental is very reasonable, nicely furnished and equipped.

My family (wife, son, myself)recently stayed here on a trip through Maine. Very clean, comfortable, affordable spot centrally located to Belfast, Camden/Rockport, Acadia, etc. Also, a fishing pier at Fort Point is nearby so I could fish while everyone else slept in.The kitchen had everything you need if you don't want to eat out every single meal. A word of advice - if you want luxury or to be in the thick of restaurants, bars, lots of people and touristy places then Stockton Springs isn't the place for you.It is a very small, quiet village but there are nice restaurants within 5-10 minutes of the apartment. Also, Belfast is very close by and it turned out to be one of our favorite towns on the whole coast. For our purposes, the upstairs apartment was perfect and we would definetly stay here again. I rated it 5 stars because of everything mentioned above.

Thank you so much for such a great stay in Maine! Your sight/taste suggestions were all winners and we have really rested here which is whey we came....

Recently, I travelled to Stockton Springs and had a WONDERFUL visit at Lilac Place. The accommodations were comfortable, cozy, and Nancy-Linn was warm and just a joy. Before I arrived, I did not have time to really plan what my husband would do while there so I approached Nancy with HELP, what can I do to keep him occupied. She came up with great ideas and we were extremely happy with our stay. The relaxation we enjoyed was so much needed.....I cannot wait to return....Oh Yes, while there we met some of the local business owners and that was a thrill.....the food was fabulous every place Nancy recommended...I highly recommend Lilac Place to anyone looking for a special vacation in Maine...

Hugs to Nancy-Linn at Lilac Place!!!!!!
