Area Description

South Londonderry is a tiny village that is typical of Vermont and the lovely Green Mountains. Our home is within walking distance of the Village Pantry du Logis for coffee, snacks and light take-out meals.

In summer, you can hike or bike the lovely West River Trail, which is accessed from our road and follows the West River through the peaceful Vermont woods. Just hop on your bike from our door and leave the car behind.

From Memorial Day through Columbus Day, stroll through the Farmer's Market on Saturdays in Londonderry showcasing the fresh vegetables and foods grown and made in Vermont. Enjoy the many 4th of July parades, nearby fishing, canoeing and kayaking lakes, old swimming holes (just ask us!), flea market in Newfane on Sundays, Townshend Auction for unique finds and entertaining auctioneer, and many church suppers and delicious restaurants. For golfers, spend the day at numerous golf courses just a short drive from our home.

July 1 through August 9, 2009, was the Vermont Summer Festival Horse show held at the Harold Beebe Farm in East Dorset. If you are a participant or spectator, we welcome you to stay in our home in 2010.

If you're lucky enough to be in Vermont in late July or mid-August, you're in for a treat! The Perseid Meteor Shower is always spectacular on a clear night, where you'll see at least one meteor a minute in a dazzling display right from a chair or blanket in the meadow!

Here is a better description of the three amazing meteor showers that can be viewed from our lawn, which surrounds our home: July 28-29 The Delta Aquarids - predawn, about 20 bright-yellow meteors occur per hour. Look for meteors to fan out east, north and west. July 29-30 The Capricornids - known for producing brilliant fireballs. It's best to observe right after sunset. If you can see the Milky Way, you'll probably be able to see this shower. August 12-13 The Perseids - look toward the constellation Perseus (about halfway above the horizon in the northeast quadrant of the sky) in the late evening. Recline with your feet facing south and look straight up. The Perseids should appear over your left shoulder...you could see 60 meteors in an hour.

Local events coming up this summer as well as the picturesque fall foliage season:

The Bondville Fair, August 28-30, 2009, features agricultural displays and contests, quilt show and contest, crafts, rides and games, music, bingo, truck, ox and horse pulling, antique tractors, clog and line dancing.

The 28th Annual Peru Fair, held on September 26, 2009, is rated by the state's Chamber of Commerce as among Vermont's Top 10 events. The homespun Peru Fair steps off with a 9:45 a.m. parade, followed by a pig roast, live music, dancing, hay rides and other entertainment. Dozens of local artisans and food vendors. Parking available at nearly Bromley Mountain, with shuttle buses provided to and from the village.

Columbus Day Weekend - The village of Newfane hosts its annual Heritage Festival on the common, a two-day craft show with great food served by the local church. If you like apple pie, this is the place to buy a yummy one, have some homemade soup and apple cobbler a la mode. The festival features something for everyone. Eighty juried crafters share the picturesque common with a farmer's market, inside and outside food booths, flea and book table, super raffle, children's corner, and musical entertainment. It's usually a beautiful fall foliage weekend!

Weston is just a short drive with it's Vermont Country Store (now open 7 days)and charming shops. Manchester, a shopper's paradise, is only 20 minutes away. The village of Ludlow and Okemo Mountain are 30 minutes away. Both Bromley and Magic are within a 15 minute drive. In summer, Bromley is buzzing with activity with its alpine slide and many other activities and entertainment for families with children.

Our home is located on a quiet country road off Route 100, which "has been called the most scenic in New England" by Yankee magazine writer Michael Blanding. "In some circles, it's known as the 'Skier's Highway,' since it connects Vermont's giants - Mount Snow, Killington, Sugarbush, and Stowe - like knots on a whip." Let's not forget Stratton, which is only 15 minutes from our door!

"But this road really comes into its own in autumn, hitting the peak of fall foliage not once but many times as it traces and up and down course along the unspoiled edge of Green Mountain State Forest."

For snowmobile enthusiasts, we're not far from VAST trails in Bondville, off Kendall Farm Road, or in Londonderry off Route 11. Visit the Vermont Vast site for more info and to purchase trail maps.

Restaurants to be found nearby are The Mill, the Three Clock Inn, Johnny Seesaw's, Swiss Inn, American Grill, Outback at Winhall River, and Jake's.

 What a wonderful week!, August 17, 2009
By Jay Meerdink (Rochester, NY)
I can't say enough good things about our stay. The house is beautiful, the location is great. Horseback riding, canoeing, all within a short drive. A great hiking trail right at the end of the driveway. And it was just easy to live there. All of the little things that we thought we'd need were already supplied. Thanks so much to our hosts, Linda and Henry!

Donna & Michael, MA, Summer 2009
We wanted to thank you so much, your house was perfect for us in so many ways. The kids loved the backyard, the toys and my 9 year old daughter was amazed that you had the same type of books that she loves to read. The cleanliness and tasteful decorations were much appreciated as well. Everything was so new and the cedar smelled great. We really enjoyed the remoteness and privacy as well. We are very much hoping to return next year. We already planned part of our itinerary and my kids claimed their beds. Estee and family, NJ, Summer, 2009
Thank you for letting us stay at your house. I really enjoyed it. My favorite thing or things I should say, is...THE BOOKS!! I just loved them! It was the best! My favorite book was "Samantha Saves the Day." I loved that book. It was the best vacation ever. Thanks to no one but you!!
Sincerely, M, New Jersey, Summer 2009
We are a family of 7 with 5 kids between the ages of 8 and 13. This house was just perfect for us!!! I can't say enough how much we loved staying here during our winter ski season. We skied Stratton, Bromley and Okemo, they are all just around the corner and very convenient. An added bonus is the hospitality of the owners; they are just great people who are honest and attentive to your needs. I would highly recommend staying at this lovely home.
Chris L., New York, Winter Season 2005-06
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this house in July '06. We loved the location & the property itself. Kitchen was well-stocked. Our dogs also loved the spot & the special treats from the owners. We hope to stay there again!
