Area Description
The town of Tamarindo is known for its cosmopolitan vibe, world-class restaurants, nightlife, hotel variety, ar galleries, and quirky gift shops. It is surrounded by two of Costa Rica's leading surf beaches, to the South is Playa Langosta, and to the North is Playa Grande, also famous for the leather back turtles. Tamarindo made its mark in surfing history, when the legendary movie "Endless Summer" was filmed there. Famous Playa Negra is only a short 30-minute drive South down the coast and Witch's Rock; another famous surf break is easily accessible from this destination.
Peaceful Playa Langosta is separated from Playa Tamarindo by a rocky headland at high tide. The bustling town of Tamarindo effortlessly blends into the exclusive residential neighborhood of Langosta, where many new shops, restaurants, luxury vacation home rentals and many international town residents have taken root and now call Tamarindo home.
One of the many reasons people elect to stay in Tamarindo for several days or weeks is because of the numerous world class activities easily available on a daily basis in or around Tamarindo. Listed below are just a few activities that put Tamarindo on the map.
Surfing and Boogie boarding: Tamarindo is the surfing capital of Costa Rica as it is centrally located and surrounded by excellent surf beaches. Tamarindo Bay has both left and right breaks and is where the majority of the surf schools are located. Playa Grande, just a quick dash across the river is known for its easy to access and most consistent hollow breaks. Playa Langosta has a challenging point and river mouth break for intermediate to advanced surfers. Boogie boarding is also very common and is a good choice for those not yet ready to brave standing on a board on top of a moving wave! Hot spots such as Witch ''''''s Rock at Playa Naranjo, Playa Avellanas and Negra are also easy to access from Tamarindo for a full day of surf. Some of these spots require four-wheel drive or boat for access. Tamarindo is full of surf camps and schools which offer inexpensive rental gear, ding repair and classes.
Sportfishing: A number of companies in Tamarindo charter boats for the day or week and can be booked in advance via the internet or upon arrival. Year round, Tamarindo Bay is an angler ''''''s paradise. The continental shelf is where you can find the big fish, Sailfish, blue, black and stripped Marlin, Wahoo, Yellowfin tuna and Mahi Mahi. Closer on shore, you will find Roosterfish, Grouper, Snapper, Spotted Mackerel and Amberjack. The Catalinas and Murcielogos Islands offer Wahooo, Roosters, Cubera and Amberjack.
Golf: Tamarindo is fortunate to be located close to two great golf resorts, Hacienda Pinilla, championship golf course Casa de Golf has an 18 hole, par-72 course with wide fairways and the Paradisus Conchal Beach and Golf Resort offers a challenging par-72 course. And for those who really want a fantastic golfing experience there is the Arnold Palmer designed golf course at the Four Seasons Resort, about an hour and a half drive North.
Some other exciting day tours are: Horseback riding, Canopy tours,
ATV mountain and beach tours and Mountain biking.
Additional Day Trips Available from Tamarindo:
Arenal Volcano: Located North of the Tilarán Mountains, Arenal is a beautiful, cone-shaped, active volcano. It produces frequent, loud booms that can be heard as far away as Monteverde. During the day you are often treated to clouds of ash and smoke billowing into the sky from Arenal's crater. On clear nights, spectators are occasionally treated to an eruption of lava and burning rocks. Its last major eruption was in August 2000.
Lake Arenal: This deep blue lake is a large reservoir at the foot of the active Arenal Volcano. You can enjoy boating, fishing and the best windsurfing conditions (western side) in the country. The eastern side of Lake Arenal has great freshwater fishing.
Monteverde National Park: This is the ultimate destination for anyone looking to walk in the clouds. Monteverde ''''''s cloud forests are protected in nearly 30,000 hectares of private reserves, including Santa Elena and the Children ''''''s Eternal Rainforest. Excellent trail systems allow you to discover the many facets of this complex life zone. This forest is famous for its populations of the legendary bird Quetzal. Enjoy other environmentally sensitive tourism activities including a Butterfly Garden, a Sky Walk and Sky Trek, a Serpentarium and more in Monteverde.
And sooo much more!!!
