Area Description

Tarpon Springs is located on Florida's "Nature (West) Coast" about 1 hr north of Tampa. The town has many historic associations, cultural and recreational activities.Americans moved there in the 1800's because of the abundant fresh water and fishing. Greek immigrants came at the turn of the century to dive commercially for sponges. The town is a pleasing mixture of many diverse cultures. The influence of Greek island life is especially strong. You often hear Greek spoken around the dock area. Carefully restored Victorian era homes surround Spring Bayou two blocks from the house. The Pinellas Trail is four blocks away and offers joggers, skaters, bike riders and walkers a protected course stretching for miles. Come fish, golf, or lounge around on the beaches. Our house is especially recommended for couples and families. We know you will leave the area with not just wonderful memories but perhaps having learned a word or two of Greek, seen Bald Eagles or kayaked with Manatees like we did this week.

Other Vacation Rental Amenities

Tarpon Springs is still a working seaport situated upon the banks of the Anclote River.Fishing and crabbing boats follow the current into the Gulf Of Mexico. You can often see one of the brightly painted sponge boats returning to port with long strings of sponges hanging above its deck. Seagulls and pelicans loiter around behind the fish house docks hoping to nab a bit of castaway fish..the locals call it "pelican happy hour"! There are no Starbucks,Gaps or Borders in town..no tour buses or mercedes and no "Miami Vice" mega yachts lingering about. The town hasn't changed much in 50 years. Some of the older Greek-American men still finger "worry beads" while they talk and laugh. Kids can watch sharks being fed at the local Aquarium and even feel the skins of rays and small sharks in the touch tanks. Local restaurants are primarily Greek but Thai,Japanese,Lebanese,Italian and other ethnic cuisines are offered nearby. Ride the trolly around the town to get your bearings while you watch the boats and people pass. Browse the antique emporiums downtown or just head to one of the beaches or state parks. The area abounds with animal life and secluded areas. One of our favorite excursions is aboard the eco-cruise which takes its passengers through quiet mangrove forests and shallows teeming with mullet. Watch Bald Eagles soar above the wide river as pelicans dive for fish and Dolphins "surf the wake" behind the boat. After sunset sit in one of the cafes sipping coffee..munch a honeyed pastry and listen to the lively conversation and laughter mix with the cries of seagulls circling above the village.

This is a true Gem!, June 5, 2008
By Liz LaForce (Fort Myers Florida)
This cottage is super awsome. We were a group of 4 ladies and wanted to go away for the weekend. The cottage is so nice, homey and clean. Easily within walking distance to activities. The people that own the cottage, Jim and Janie Scurti are very helpful. We spent lots of time on their front porch!
