Area Information
Each year, thousands of visitors find something to love about the High Country of North Carolina. Located in the northwest corner of the Old North State, the area is only a two-hour drive from major metropolitan areas of Charlotte and Winston-Salem/Greensboro.
The High Country offers something for everyone in every season. Outdoor enthusiasts relish the numerous state parks in the region during the summer months, including Elk Knob State Park, Grandfather Mountain State Park, New River State Park, Three Top Mountain Gamelands Area and Mount Jefferson State Park. With some of the highest elevations in the Southeast, the summer months offer a cooler alternative to points south. Additionally, the headwaters of the New River and its tributaries offer trout flyfishing and several outfitters offer guided trips, kayaking and tubing. The region also boasts lots of shopping, particularly arts and crafts shops in Boone, Blowing Rock, West Jefferson, Banner Elk and Todd.
Summer also brings a variety of cultural events to the High Country. Boone, West Jefferson, Todd, Banner Elk, Valle Crucis and Blowing Rock each offer free outdoor concerts featuring some of the region’s finest artists and showcase the rich musical heritage of the Southern Appalachians. Each town also offers unique shopping experiences with galleries and arts and crafts shops.
In the fall, the High Country is in the spotlight again as the cold frosty mornings of autumn give way to nature’s brilliant display of autumn leaf colors. The Blue Ridge Parkway is one of the most popular and best venues for leaf peeping.
And as fall gives way to winter, wax up your skis and get ready to hit the slopes in the High Country. With an average annual snowfall of 35 inches in Boone, the area’s ski resorts are typically open from Thanksgiving through the end of February. Appalachian Ski Mountain, Ski Beech, Sugar Mountain Ski Resort, Hawksnest are within about an hours’ drive of most points in the High Country. The region is also one of the premier Christmas tree growing regions in the United States. Dozens of small family farms offer choose-and-cut adventures from Thanksgiving to Christmas, complete with hay rides, hot chocolate and, of course, the perfect Christmas Tree.

Great getaway
February 27, 2013
I loved everything about this getaway. I can't wait to come back. Walmart and other store wasn't that far away. Instead of another romantic weekend we're going to bring the kids next time.
