Area Info
Nestled in between the pristine white beaches of the Mexican Caribbean and the lush jungle lies the enigmatic Mayan city of Tulum; the only one built by the sea. It is located in the Yucatan peninsula just 120 km away from Cancun and borders the Sian Kaan Natural Biosphere reserve to the south. Tulum is divided into three different areas, the beach/hotel zone, the town and the archaeological zone. Tulum has the most spectacular beaches on the Caribbean coast, many still practically virgin and its distinguished by its simple architecture that shows a deep respect for the environment.

rest and relaxation

January 9, 2012

our family rented Casa Caracol for 3 weeks this December. The accommodations were basic yet comfortable for a family of six. Do note that the house does not have an oven, coffee maker or blender, and has only two lounge chairs by the pool. Having a pool was wonderful for those days we wanted to kick back at the house all day. It was also refreshing to jump in after a long day at the beach and in town. The property owner, Xavier and property manager, Elisa, were very helpful to ensure that we had an enjoyable experience in Tulum. They provided us recommendations to restaurants and activities. The property owner arranged a chef for us and the property manager arranged airport transfers. It took us a while to get used to the sounds of highway traffic, the neighbourhood dogs and the rooster who had no sense of time. Christmas week was exceptionally noisy due to the loud music from various celebrations playing into the middle of the night. The beach, which is about a $5 - 10 (USD) ride from Tulum is absolutely beautiful. White sand and blue sea! In Tulum, there are many restaurants and local food vendors to chose from and the prices are reasonable. (food and drink at the beach are more expensive) Don't miss the night market at the municipal plaza Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays - where you will find local foods, and arts and crafts for sale. we really enjoyed ourselves and will certainly return to Tulum.
