This accessible and affordable rental,centrally located on the East Side of the Big Island, is only 1 mile from Volcano Village and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Minutes from Restaurants, Art Galleries, Golf, the Volcano Winery and the Cooper Community Center, home to the popular Sunday Farmer's Market.
This newly renovated home with front slate lanai, back yard garden, and campfire pit for evening marshmallow toasting, also features the art work of Bonnie Layton, enviromental painter, whose studio and gallery are located across the street. Her creative energy brings warmth and life to the Cottage, making guests feel comfortable and at home.

Within Driving Distance of Historic Downtown Hilo (35 minutes), Punalu'u Black Sands Beach-Resting spot for the endangered Hawksbill Turtle (30 minutes), Kalapana-viewing site for Lava Flows (35 minutes), South Point (the southernmost point in the United States)and the secluded Green Sands Beach (40 minutes).

A perfect home base for outdoor adventurers and environmentalists who appreciate the arts and local culture!

Area Information

The Artist's Cottage, nestled in the quiet Rainforest on the Mountain of Mauna Loa, is surrounded by Native Hapu'u Ferns, and Ohia trees with brilliant red Lehua blossoms. Altitude is 3500 ft. and weather variable due to the activity of Kilauea, the world's most active Volcano. Expect cool nights and be prepared for rain. Umbrellas and flashlights are provided. I truly have NEVER been more welcomed, felt more pampered by all the "extras", or had a nicer stay than we did at Bob and Bonnie's Artist Cottage in Volcano. The list of great things is off the chart (and I don't throw around complements without merit). So charming with fabulous artwork all around, charming porch with rocker's, peaceful, quiet, cool temps, (no mosquitos up there either). No kidding when I say, friends or family haven't thought of all the extras these two have! Every imagineable & over the top, luxury toiletry items, sumptuous food items etc. I cannot name them all. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED! I better keep this gem to myself or we'll never get back in there. I wish we had stayed many more days. Just outside of Volcano park etc. Great experience. Will be back for certain. Bob is a hoot too! Bonnie is a terrific artist and BOTH are super hosts.

A delightful place

We stayed 3 nights at the Artist's Cottage. The cottage was conveniently located right outside of the Volcano National Park and it was a charming and relaxing place to come back to after a long day. The cottage had everything we needed and Bonnie and Bob were very thoughtful host--they truly took care of us. We especially loved the kitchen and the patio! So lovely. We highly recommend the place for anyone who is looking for a peaceful retreat and wants to explore the beauty of the VNP.
