Volcano Hawaii Rental, House is near National Park (#46530)
Volcano, Big Island, HawaiiDescription of the Volcano vacation home rental
This house was built in 2006 and makes for a great home away from home with brand-new, comfortable beds, a 40-inch LCD TV with surround sound, comfortable futon sofas that can double as beds for extra sleeping. A well-stocked kitchen, just bring up some groceries and you're ready to cook. A dishwasher makes for easy clean-up and the washer/dryer will come in handy too. Sleep in cool comfort in the high-elevation of the Volcano rain forest. We have high thread-count sheets, warm blankets and comforters and if you're still chilly - there are space heaters for each bedroom or fire up the wood burning stove to warm up the whole house. This house is insulated, unlike many others in the area, which we found to be too cold when we were house hunting. This area is very quiet and relaxing, enjoy the birdsong. Our lot is nearly a 1/2 acre and has many of the native Ohia trees with their beautiful red Lehua blossoms. There are also the Hapuu fern trees that can grow to 30 feet tall, and tropical anthirium flowers. The house is outfitted with wireless high-speed internet access. You'll love this house and there's a lot to do nearby, so you'll want to stay awhile.
The entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is about a mile away, but if that makes you nervous, bear in mind the town of Volcano is upslope of the crater and therefore safer from lava flows than other parts of the island. The island has been erupting continuously since 1983 and in 2008 a huge steam vent opened in Halemaumau Crater, which can be viewed from different angles at the Volcano House and the Jagger Museum. At the Visitor Center, there's an informative film and rangers who can update you on the volcanic activity. Also, there may be guided hikes posted, if you are interested. The Volcano House also has a restaurant, if you'd like to eat and admire the impressive caldera that once was a lake of lava. Exploring the park you'll find sulfer banks and steam vents and the Thurston Lava Tube, which you can walk into. There's also an art gallery in the original Volcano House hotel. There are lots of great hiking trails throughout the park.
The town of Volcano has a few markets, a gas station, a post office, even a skate park and is home to a Thai restaurant, the Lava Rock Cafe, Kiawe Kitchen and the Kilauea Lodge Restaurant. A farmer's market with fresh produce, hot coffee, pastries and breakfast sandwiches happens every Sunday morning, from 6:30-9 a.m.
Also in the vicinity is the Mauna Loa Scenic Road which leads to tree molds, created when a lava flow encountered a damp tree truck hardening the lava around it. More tree molds are seen a the beginning of the Napau Crater Trail. There's als othe Kipuka Puaulu (Bird Park), a 30-minute hike through an old growth of forest surrounded by newer lava flows. At the end of Mauna Loa Scenic Road is the trailhead to Mauna Loa Trail, the place to start a multi-day trek to ascend the summit of Mauna Loa. South of the park entrance near mile marker 38 is the Ka'u Desert Trail, which lead to footprints, most created during the explosion of 1790 and a few from an earlier explosion in the 1500s. Just outside the park is the Volcano Golf and Country Club, which also has a restaurant. The Volcano Winery is another mile or so down the road, with several unusual wines.
There are many exotic treasures to go see in every direction by driving 30-45 minutes. Punaluu Black Sand Beach is popular with sea turtles that can be seen swimming nearby and resting onshore. Going in another direction you'll find volcanically heated tidepools, including the popular Champagne Pond. On the way there is the Lava Tree State Park, which has several tree molds. Snorkeling in the Kapoho area offers a calm and protected enviroment that the fish also like. Keep on going if you'd like to see where the lava is currently entering the ocean, best viewing is after dark & flashlights are needed.
Hilo is about a half-hour drive the other direction and is home to a rainforest zoo, Rainbow falls along with several other waterfalls, the Lyman Museum with it's incredible displays of Hawaiian geology, plant, animal and fish life, the Pacific Tsunami Museum and many restaurants and shopping opportunities.
