Cottage near lake in own woodland (#32563)

Washington, Maine

Description of the Washington vacation cottage rental

This bit of our family heritage is a custom built cottage in three acres of woodland, with access to a three mile long lake. There are three pairs of loons(great northern divers)on the lake, and the cottage takes its name, MEDAWISLA from the Penobscot Indian name for a loon. The cottage of recycled post and beam construction has been designed and built by my daughter and son-in-law, Rosie and Matt Curtis as a second home for me. It is available for renting,July through November.
The cottage has a spacious, open plan living room, with a well equipped kitchen, with a glimpse of the lake through the trees. Bathroom, second bedroom and a meditation room, open off the living area, and patio doors lead onto a deck. There is also a mud room, with a washing machine and dryer. A unique spiral staircase, hand crafted by Matt, leads up to the main bedroom, whose windows look out among the tree tops.
There is a firepit, telephone, music centre and an interesting collection of books. The lake is only a minute away and visitors are welcome to use the family's fishing canoe.

Area Description

Washington is a small quirky community and extremely friendly. It is an ordinary workaday place, pleasantly off the main tourist routes, but within easy reach of buzzing Rockland, Rockport and Camden, where you can find sailing trips, sea kyaking and a host of interesting restaurants. There are regular concerts at Rockport Opera House. Interesting films can be seen at the unique Strand film theatre in Rockland, as well as popular films at the multiscreen cinema complex there. In the opposite direction, Augusta has an excellent State Museum. Day expeditions can be made to Acadia National Park, or by ferry to the offshore islands of Isoboro and the Vynalhavens.
Medawisla is ideal for those visitors who want somthing a little different, away from the usual stresses but with a variety of entertainment and activities just down the road (17 miles in either direction). On a rainy wet day, there is nothing nicer than to curl up in the meditation room with a book, play games or do a jigsaw. A place to savour the rich and varied flavours of Maine.

 Perfect!, August 10, 2009
By Lynn Ellison-Murphy (Orleans, Cape Cod, MA)
This was a wonderful getaway from our day to day routine. We loved the cabin, and Washington DOES have hidden treasures inddeed: the Labyrinth was a special treat for my husband and I and our two teen boys. We loved the "Downtown Gallery", Farmers Market, Sweetgrass winery, and Sweet Season Farm. Canoeing was great on the beautiful Washington Pond. We discovered Liberty Tool and what a treat! Eileen's Take-Out in just a tiny trailer was a gem in itself! We did Camden, Cadillac Mtn. in Acadia, Bar Harbor, Bald Mtn., Spruce Mtn. and so much more! Anna and Rosie were so wonderfully accommodating. We hope to return. Thanks for your delightful cabin! Our evening family campfires were memories we shall treasure!

 Wonderful getaway, June 30, 2009
By Jeff Brenner (Newton, MA USA)
This cottage, known as Medawisla, was an absolutely delightful escape. Beautiful, rustic, easy to live in, peaceful, warm - my wife and I have found ourselves running out of adjectives to describe the place and our week there. Damp weather didn't spoil a thing for us. Washington Maine itself is hardly exciting, but it's located within 40 minutes of lots of wonderful coastal towns, from Camden to Boothbay Harbor, and we did manage to find several charming 'finds' within minutes of the cottage. Modest water view, but a very short walk to the canoe provided on lovely Washington Pond. The owner, Ms. Needham, couldn't have been more easy and pleasant to deal with. Plenty of helpful information on site, and a nearby woman who knows all the ropes. The 'meditation room' was just great. It was just the 2 of us most of the week, but it would work fine for 4. Brand new washer/dryer came the day we arrived, (though we didn't need to use it ourselves). We hope to return many times.

A beautiful cabin in the woods, August 11, 2008
By Dory Rhodes (New York, NY)
The cabin and the setting was lovely. It was private and quiet and close enough to the local towns to add variety to our stay. The lake is beautiful and if it wasn't for the rain we would have enjoyed it daily. Our day trips to Pemaquid Point and Acadia were perfect. A great retreat for anyone!

Great cottage in the woods, July 28, 2008
By Jen (Mount Holly, NJ USA)
The cottage was fabulous (great location, plenty of room, love the meditation room). Thank you so much. It was convenient to many tourist areas which was great. Being able to cook meals and have family time in a real place was a real treat. We would definitely consider coming again in the future.

This cabin was exactly as described and offered a great experience. We were a family of three and had more than enough room. Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor were just two hours away and made for a great day trip. A trip to the coast was within a one hour drive. This cabin offered a great opportunity to get away from the commercial tourist areas but was also convenient when we wanted to visit those areas during the day.

We really enjoyed our stay on Washington Pond. It's a beautiful setting and the cottage is lovely, as well. We would certainly consider going again!
