Description of the Waterboro vacation cottage rental
The beautiful sun porch overlooks the lake from all sides and the wrap-around deck is perfect for morning coffee or afternoon drinks with a 180 view of the water through the pines.
Stay includes use of canoe, two kayaks (with child and adult life preservers), two adult bikes, floating chairs, gas grill, fire pit and 75 ft waterfront with great swimming, good fishing, a private dock and a shallow wade in beachy area. Since the house is set up high in the pines - the path to the dock and lake is a gentle sloping switchback walkway with a stopping place halfway to admire the great waterview.
Many year round activities from swimming, boating, biking, hiking, snowmobiling, ice skating, cross country skiing and ice fishing are at your doorstop or nearby.
There also is a large open basement hangout area with a Foosball table and TV with VHS for the kids on rainy days.
There is no internet. We actually did that on purpose because we wanted the cottage to be a place to unplug and swim, fish, hike, bike, boat, read, cook, play games and reconnect with each other - the way vacations used to be. There is a DVD, VCR on two TVs and a good selection of movies, games, puzzles, books and speakers for an IPod for rainy days.
Of course, many renters bring their own hot spots or cell phones with internet and there are many places in town that have internet...
Located on a dead-end dirt road with miles of hiking and biking trails to explore - a perfect getaway - just two hours from Boston.
Pets allowed on a per case basis with a pet fee and damage deposit outlined on this site. Please ask.
The online calendar is up-to-date on a weekly basis so feel free to check it to see if the dates you are looking to reserve are available.
It is 30 miles from Kennebunkport, 35 miles from Portland, 30 miles from Old Orchard Beach, and 35 miles from Wolfeboro, NH. Very near York, Biddeford and 45 miles from Kittery and Portsmouth, NH.
The area around Lake Sherburne is pastoral with rolling hills and vistas, local farms, bakeries, restaurants, antiques, quaint towns and other lakes. The Nature Conservancy's Waterboro Barrens are nearby with miles of protected trails to explore.
Cherry Knoll Farm is just up the road from the cottage and a favorite with all our renters who have stopped by. Ray and Carol sell fresh organic produce, eggs, cheese and meats, home made breads as well as lobsters and delicious crab cakes right from their farm Maine kitchen.
Oak Street Bistro in Alfred is nice year round restaurant with a stone fireplace, a martini bar and live music on the weekends.
Willowbrook 19th Century Village nearby has lots of events, an old-fashioned penny candy store, a merry-go-round, great restaurant and farmers markets on the weekends though October.
Shaker Pond Ice cream is a local pride and open all year round.

Charming quiet lake

Two Words: Awe Some
June 10, 2013
I was searching for a great way to celebrate my girlfriend's college graduation when I stumbled upon The Dragonfly Hill Cottage... boy, am I glad I did! I reached out to the owner early in the morning after reading a few reviews and google mapping the location... I kept my fingers crossed I would hear back in at least 24 hrs and boom in about 20 minutes my phone rang with the good news that we'd be able to be accommodated even on short notice! The drive from NYC flew by and we arrived to find our lake house in pristine condition with everything right at our fingertips... Hiking, Biking, Swimming, Canoeing, you name it we crushed it.... With helpful tips from the owner we also cooked every meal courtesy of Cherry Knoll farms which is just up the street... the owner's there are this awesome old Boston couple and the bacon is worth the trip for sure... I think I saw maybe 2 other people on the lake the whole time we were there (granted it was mid week) but it seems like a pretty quiet place... Sunrise and sunset from the dock was awesome and so was the view from the master bedroom and the breakfast table... We'll be back for sure... you don't know until you go ... so check it out...
Great weekend getaway!

My boyfriend, dog, and I decided to get out of Boston for a couple of days and found Dragonfly Hill Cottage! Valerie was super accommodating of our last minute request and we spent two lovely nights at the cottage. The lake is absolutely beautiful, the cottage is immaculate and adorable and it has everything you could possibly need to cook, relax, and enjoy your stay. It's only two hours outside of Boston and definitely a "hidden gem." We also enjoyed the nearby Cherry Knoll Farm-- delicious steaks, bacon, eggs, and produce!, hiking Abbot Mountain, and yummy BBQ nearby. We were already trying to figure out when we could return before we left! Overall a great experience.
What a great week!
January 3, 2013
It was our first Maine vacation and it didn't disappoint. The cottage was clean and beautiful! The kids loved the kayaks and the canoe and my husband was able dock our boat. We had fun exploring the area and meeting the locals. I loved the fact that we were able to enjoy all the benefits of a lake vacation while being so close to the ocean. Day trips to the beach and shopping were a plus. It also worked in our favor that the weather was great the whole time!
Dragonfly Hill Cottage

My wife and I spent a week in September at the cottage and truly enjoyed the tranquility that it offers. The lake is beautiful and so clear that it reflects the tree lined shores during the day and the stars at night. The lake also offer great fishing. Live bait is available at the Landlocked Lobster where you can also purchase lobster which they are happy to cook for you free of charge. Enjoy the lobster on the decks overlooking the lake and the rustic crowing of the free range roosters residing along the dirt road. There is a supermarket reasonably close to purchase supplies. The best review we can give the cottage is that we are looking forward to visiting again.
Peace and Quiet!
September 5, 2012
We rented this cute cozy cabin along with our five children and loved every minute! It was so nice not to hear a sound other than us and a few roosters. I especially enjoyed the use of the kayaks and canoe for myself and the kids. They fished from dawn until dusk right off the dock. My daughter was proud to have almost caught the famous large mouth bass that resides in the lake. The cottage is close to lots of towns to visit. Wells, Oqunquit, Portland, are all close and make great day trips. We visited the farms that were recommended and they brought many smiles to our faces.
like the pictures...
July 29, 2012
the cottage looks really like the pictures on the website, with all equipment required. Our pleasure:going with the canoë to the left side of the lake, it's more beautiful and wild, and less inhabited, with silence you can make a turtles's safari...At your right, you have others cottages..Around, a lot of things to visit: Portland, Porstmouth... and we make a remake of "the road of Madisson", we visited a lot of covered bridges near the whites mountains. We spent a good week.
Promises of Great Fishing....
June 20, 2012
We stayed at Dragonfly Hill Cottage for 4 nights. I would have to stop to count the number of fish the four of us caught. The biggest was a 6# large mouth bass that took a dive into the deep pulling up with it a mushroom of mud and weeds but well hooked. What a thrill for the 3 of us who witnessed this catch. (We release, so it is still there unless caught again)...many bass large and small mouth, pickerel, yellow perch....and a sunfish that was spared being hooked. We had all we needed. The washer/dryer was a nice plus...but the gas grill really helped us BBQ some great meals. We made good use of the canoe and one of the kayaks. We watched a few movies. A good time was had by all who enjoyed the view and set up.

The cottage is very nice and well equipped for a short as well as a long stay - a lot of attention to minor details. The location is perfect, overlooking the lake, ideal for a tranquil and relaxing stay. Boating on the calm lake is very refreshing.

Weekend Get away
November 9, 2011
We were looking for a place to stay when we visited our daughter at UNE. We have a small dog that we wanted to bring as well for the visit. I found this place and fell in love before we even got there. It was cozy and quaint, comfortable and had everything we needed. There is an abundance of things to do and we didn't really get to take advantage of that or the food as we were busy with our daughter. We would definitely stay again.
The perfect Retreat
November 2, 2011
We wanted a place to get away to celebrate our daughter's 30th. We fished, we canoed, we hiked, we biked, we cooked and we slept in - just what we needed for a great escape. Beds and chairs were comfotable. Kitchen was well stocked. Even enjoyed the fooseball in the rec room and the firepit - where we cooked the bass and pickerel that we had caught.
Great Weekend Getaway!
October 27, 2011
My husband and I flew to Portland to join our daughter for a 30th birthday weekend. We stayed at Dragonfly Cottage and had a wonderful time. The fall colors were beautiful, and the way the cottage is situated on the lake makes for a lovely view. The cottage is clean, comfortable, has everything you need, and felt like a home away from home. The three of us went out in the canoe and caught a 16" bass, a yellow perch, and a pickerel. The last morning we were there, my husband and I went out in the canoe at sunrise - me with my cup of coffee in the bow and my husband paddling in the stern - a magical steam rising off the water as we slipped through the water. We will definitely return!
The perfect Columbus day weekend getaway
October 12, 2011
We had a wonderful time at the cottage! The weather was simply perfect, and we took our dog for his first-ever canoe trip, which was such fun. We visited with Ray and Carol at Cherry Knoll Farm and picked a great assortment of apples at Raven Hill Orchard and we had a very nice dinner at Bar Lola, thanks entirely to the recommendation. We spent hours hiking around the Barrens on Sunday and made s'mores Sunday night, then finished off the trip by spending almost all day yesterday wandering around Portland . All in all it was the perfect combination of relaxation and activity! Thank you again so much for everything, Valerie. Your kindness, hospitality, and wonderful recommendations (and, of course, your lovely cottage) made this a vacation to remember.

Beautiful cottage, thoughtfully appointed
October 7, 2011
My husband and I just returned from a 5 day stay at Dragonfly Hill, and the cottage was absolutely wonderful! So many details were attended to from the books, games, toothbrush supply, and videos. I was a little nervous about booking on line, wondering if the cottage would match up to the photos on the website. Not only did the cottage meet expectations, if anythiing it was better than expected. The views from the cottage were beautiful and my husband was able to take some really cool photos of the lake reflections. I would HIGHLY recommend Dragonfly Hill. What a peaceful place in a crazy world.
Outdoor activity, nature and relaxation!
October 4, 2011
We spent a week in late September in this cottage and really enjoyed ourselves. This place is great due to its proximaity to Boston and the coast. The decor is nice and the house is updated and comfortable. We cooked most meals in the house and found the kitchen adequately equipped. The highlights were kayaking under a bridge into a connected quiet lake, hiking a summit in the White Mountains, laying on the dock at night looking at stars, getting milk from a dairy and buying organic produce for a local farm that we rode bikes to. The area is beautiful and peaceful. We chose this place because of the kayaks, canoe and bicycles which gave us plenty of activities to choose from. I would recommend this rental to anyone who loves to be on a lake, in beautiful countryside, with plenty of activities.
WAS JUST SUPPOST TO BE----!!
September 29, 2011
Having found so many cabins available in Maine on the computer, for some reason I kept being drawn back to Dragonfly! I found out why. Everything was as Valerie had said, and even more! We had a little hard time finding it, (roads not marked quite as well as an out of town person would hope for), but, upon driving up to the cabin just took all my tension and cares away. The cabins view of the lake is beautiful, and the cabin it's self is very well supplied with just about everything you need. Decorated nicely and quaint. I love to fish and brought my fishing gear, even though there were some poles provided in the shed. It was a little warm for this time of year for us but there were plenty of fans available. I believe things happen for a reason! Not only was the cabin a great place to relax, do a little fishing, look at the start of the leaves changing color, BUT, even more meeting Ray and Carol at their Cherry Knoll Farm was the BEST!!!!! From the moment we walked into their country kitchen we felt like we had known them all our lives!!! They welcome you in offer you a glass of wine, fresh cheese and crackers. And, before you know it your eating something Carol has been cooking on the stove all day. Ray makes all the breads and is eager to share that with you also. You can buy much of what you want to eat at the cabin from Ray. I may of not caught any fish at the cabins lake, HOWEVER, WE CAUGHT 2 of the "BEST PEOPLE" you could ever befriend. It was a perfect few days, Dragonfly is within so many nice places to visit and of course go and eat lobster!! We look so forward to another stay in Maine. You can't possible go wrong with this place. Thanks Valerie for all your information you gave us on places to go and see. I was very helpful. Jacqueline and Brian Sarasota, Florida

We had a beautiful week at the Dragonfly cottage. It's extremely well equipped and a very relaxing place to be. The kayaks and canoe were a great addition, and the dock was a great place to hang out in the mornings and evenings. Valerie was easy to reach and very thoughtful about providing information on the area. We'd recommend the cottage to others looking for a vacation on a small, quiet lake.

Great place to relax and unwind
September 12, 2011
Thank-you for a great week. We enjoyed looking at the lake each morning when we woke up and even managed to have breakfast and coffee outside a few mornings. Having use of the kayaks and canoe was an added bonus and the lake was so easy to navigate. A trip to Ray and Carol's is well worth it if you are looking for fresh meats and vegetables. We ended up cooking many more meals at the cottage than planned between what Ray had to offer and the Notre Dame bakery which was also excellent. The kitchen was very well equipped and had everything we needed to make dinner. The owner of the property (Valerie) was very attentive and wanted to make sure we had everything we needed during our stay. Both my husband and I already miss the ability to walk out to the dock and read or swim whenver we wanted to. I highly reccomend this property if you are looking to relax.
Go enjoy Dragon Hill cottage
August 30, 2011
Stayed here with my partner and two teenage nieces for a week in August of 2011. We had an excellent time at this cozy, very private, comfortable cottage with plenty to do and see in the area. The views are spectacular from the cottage and there is a large two-tiered deck for sitting and dinning as well as an indoor dinning area with views to enjoy. We were very glad to have a full kitchen to use and had several prepared meals with goods provided by Cherry Knoll Farm (do stop here first and meet Ray and Carol). We also stopped at bakery Notre Dame, excellent baked goods with proceeds benefiting local food pantries. Plenty to do at the lake we swam and kayaked everyday. The cottage is also well located for day trips to many hot spots in the area. We visited Ogunquit ME, Wolfeboro NH and Portland ME. Much more to do and see that we did not fit in would definitely return again to explore the area more. Great relaxing time, thanks!!
March 2, 2011
We found the cottage to be as peaceful and comfortable as the picture and even more open and the views more captivating. Set back comfortably on a quiet dead end road, access into the house is shaded, flat and easy to unpack (especially all the winter gear we brought). The mud room provided ample space to store gear to keep the cottage uncluttered. Multiple use tables let us prepare food, have puzzles going, and dine comfortably. The beds were comfortable and the entire feel was casual and comfortable with a Pottery Barn and April Cornell feel. The recommendations for Harris Farm xc skiing and Cherr Knoll for local gourmet items were perfect. We felt like treasured old friends. Thank you for sharing!
Owner Supplied Testimonials
I just wanted to thank you and let you know that we had a wonderful time at Dragonfly Hill Cottage. The house was lovely and had everything we could need. It seems like it is well taken care of. We also very much appreciated not only your email with suggestions but also the binder and guest book filled with information and tips from the other guests. It was a very relaxing and fun week and we were sad to have to leave at the end of it.
Just wanted to say thank you and let you know that I had a really nice time at the cottage. Trey and I were very comfortable and the location was just right.
We loved the cottage. we utilized the campfire pit and the canoe as well as the kayaks. We love the view and it was so close to many area attractions. I have to say it was near perfect - my husband didn't catch any fish, otherwise it was perfect.
We had a wonderful time at Dragonfly Hill Cottage! You have such a cute, cozy and clean place. The kitchen was well stocked with pots, pans, utensils and plates/ cups and we did quite a bit of cooking and barbecuing. The supplied linens and towels were a great addition. We were also thankful to have the washer/ dryer available to us. We all enjoyed fishing and canoeing every day. My son and husband caught half a dozen fish each but my daughter and I didn't catch anything. Next time, I suppose...but we did enjoy our daily mother/ daughter canoe rides around the lake. To the far left of the lake is a fairly large log floating on the lake where about 10 turtles bask in the sun most of the day. We dubbed it Turtle Island and it was our favorite spot to visit each day. One day we even saw a bald eagle on that same log. It was amazing and the first time I have seen one that close up in the wild. We stopped our canoe and watched it until it flew away. Totally majestic! We did enjoy a few evenings out by the fire pit roasting marshmallows with the kids. We visited Cherry Knoll Farm to stock up on a few supplies. Ray and Carol are truly wonderful people. We visited Willowbrook Village and had a few dinners at The Oak Street Bistro. The kids were amazed at the VHS tapes and viewed quite a few of them. We also enjoyed playing the various games. Thank you for sharing your cottage and making it so welcoming. We can tell you take pride in the cottage and it shows!
Our stay at Dragonfly Hill cottage was one of the most enjoyable adventures our family has ever enjoyed! We fished in the lake every day, catching three large bass (which become three great dinners) and many pickerel and other small fighters, and canoed and kayaked the lake end to end several times. The cottage was exceptionally clean, very well stocked, and we wanted for nothing during our seven-night stay. We paid Ray and Carol at Cherry Knoll Farm three visits (mom's favorite part of the trip!), and ate well the entire stay thanks to their generosity and family-like welcome. Valerie was easy to contact if we had needed anything from her, and was very quick to reply to any questions we had before and during our stay. While staying at Dragonfly Hill, we visited Wells Harbor for some fishing with Cap'n Satch, spent a day exploring Boston and going to a Sox game, took in the Atlantic at Scarbourough, and found some outstanding food at Otto's Pizzeria in Portland, The Flatbread Company in Portsmouth, had ice cream at Shaker Pond in Alfred, and enjoyed our breakfasts overlooking the lake from the cottage. We are looking forward to the next chance we get to visit Maine and Dragonfly Hill Cottage, and have told our friends and families about our new home away from home. Everything about the property was fantastic. I don't think the home itself is more than about 10 years old, and is in immaculate condition. It was very clean, and well supplied for us to keep it clean and leave it clean. Having a washer and dryer, with detergent, was a huge bonus: we didn't have to pack as many clothes, and could return home without a stack of laundry to do as soon as we returned. The only complaint I can think of has nothing to do with the cottage itself, but the last few hundred yards of the road to the cottage were extremely rough. Our kids referred to it as "Test Track" from Disneyworld's EPCOT ride. We have three kids; 13, 9, and 7. Everyone loved the space. The beds were super comfy. SUPER. It was quiet except for several mornings of a Rooster announcing he crossed the road. 13 miles to the nearest Walmart. We felt very safe here and again, the owners are super easy to contact. Enjoy your stay!
We did enjoy our stay at your cottage. You have a lovely cottage in a beautiful location. Hope to visit again sometime in the future!
The cottage is really lovely! We also really enjoyed visiting Carol and Ray's farm. I bought quite a bit, chatted quite a bit, and the kids enjoyed a tour from Ray. What a special place.

We had a wonderful time in Maine at the cottage. It was peaceful, relaxing and so much fun! We shared with the children the joys of canoeing, boogie boarding, fireflies and driving down winding country roads with the windows down and the radio up. All five of us enjoyed our stay quite a bit.

First of all I want to say that you have a lovely cottage with beautiful views of the lake. I loved waking up in the morning and having my morning coffee in the sun room enjoying the views and the quiet. We spent many hours out on the lake in the canoe and my son (16 yrs old) loved the kayak. He and my husband fished quite a lot too. The weather could not have been better.
I want to thank you for letting us enjoy your home and have the memories of a really wonderful vacation.

I wish I had booked two weeks. We had a great time!
On Saturday I went up alone and enjoyed the peace and quiet until Sunday on my own. I stopped at Ray and Carol's around 1:45 and met Ray out back in the garden. We talked a bit about the garden and he gave me a handful of fresh garlic from the ground. Then he brought me in, showed me around the house, We talked about where I was from and amazingly enough had friends in common! I got some wonderful ribeye steaks, eggs, potatoes, cheese, coldcuts, bread, onions, fruit, veggies and of course crabcakes!! We had some wine and more chat and I finally got to the cottage around 4:00pmish.
It was a gorgeous day/evening, the cottage was perfect! I loved the master bedroom and the window looking out to the lake.
On the first day of summer we had a steak barbeque, a canoe ride, fishing, a campfire, samoas, and get this - saw our first lightening bugs of the season.
Welcome summer! You have a gem of a place there!

Thank you so much for allowing us to enjoy your Maine cottage!
We had a wonderful, RELAXING week. The modern amenities are fabulous. We had everything we could possibly need.
I particularly enjoyed the view from the porch and the fact that the only things to hear were birds and frogs! The 'silence' was golden.
My kids loved fishing in the lake. They caught so many bass that we lost track of counting them.
The lake water was fabulous..warm..clean! The boating was excellent as well. We spent lots of time on the kayaks exploring the lake.
The cottage is perfectly located. We took many day trips. Portland Head Light. Old Orchard. Ogunquit. The wild animal park in Gray. Smitty's Cinema in Sanford was a favorite spot as well... great to enjoy a meal or dessert while watching a movie!
Speaking of movies, your collection is perfect! Something for everyone...lots of classics!
Thanks again for everything! If we make another trip to Maine, we will surely want to stay at Dragonfly Hill Cottage!

Thank you for such a nice week - the weather was kind of miraculous, and your house is lovely. We had a very nice time and hugely enjoyed the lake and all your thoughtful touches included with the rental.
Marybeth - Maine
Dragonfly Hill is a lovely, little cottage on a quiet dirt road, over-looking the lake. The name isn't just cute and catchy, there was a dragonfly everywhere I looked!
When we got there and settled in, we immediately wandered onto the back deck. Suddenly, everything seemed quiet and all we could hear were the birds chirping. I took it all in, and at that moment I knew it was going to the best vacation ever!
The inside of the cottage was bright and very clean. The view from the sun room was amazing. I think we could have moved in and never left! The bedrooms are adorable, and the decor has an old country feel.
We spent our mornings sitting at the dining table in the sun room, drinking our coffee and enjoying the scenery. After lunch we would go down to the dock and either sit with our feet in the water or make good use of the canoe that is available during the stay.
We loved the canoe and we spent hours on it. There are a lot of fun places to discover and we even found a real beaver dam! There are also a lot of hiking trails and great views in every direction!
In the evening, we went out to the Oak Street Bistro, which was delicious! Excellent lobster bisque! The other nights we cooked from home in the cottage's fully stocked kitchen. The super market, Hannafords, is just a 15 minute drive from the house.
There are also a lot of local farms where you can buy all of your fresh produce and meats, many of them using an honor system. We found that everyone was very friendly and laid-back.
I would definitely encourage anyone who's looking for a romantic, peaceful and/or adventurous vacation to visit Dragonfly Hill. It has everything you need to feel at home, and you will wish you could stay just a little longer.

"Relax in the beauty of a lakefront Maine cottage in the woods."
I arrived with my two boys ages 11, 14 after a quick morning drive from Boston. The cottage is adorable, and walking in to see the view of the lake brought big smiles to the boys. We walked down to the lake and enjoyed the tall trees, green and quiet. The cottage has everything you need. We hung out on the porch, had meals and played games. Went kayaking and canoeing in the lake to explore. Went for a swim too. Went to places nearby for local food and produce (yum!) did some antiquing too. Wonderful place to read, catch up with family and friends and play in the lake. All in all its two thumbs up, we will definitely be back!
