Area Information
The Finger Lakes Region is said to have gotten its name from an old Iroquois legend ' the Gread God Manitou wanted to reward the Iroquois Confederacy for their courage in battle and their loyalty to the Great Spirit. He brought part of their happy hunting ground down from the heavens, but the hand of Manitou slipped when as he was bringing it down and caused six indentations now known as the Finger Lakes: Canandaigua, Keuka, Seneca, Cayuga, Owasco and Skaneateles.
Watkins Glen is principally known for it 's spectacular State Park and the Watkins Glen International Racing Circuit. The State Park is a wondrous 1,000-acre park in the Village of Watkins Glen. It is filled with erosion-sculptured chasms, rock formations, and nineteen waterfalls. Visitors walking the trail pass by caves, rock caverns, walk behind two of the waterfalls and will climb 600 feet in elevation in the one and half miles of trail.
The Watkins Glen International Racing circuit brings over 6-months of racing enthusiasts to the area ' hosting such races as NASCAR, INDY, Daytona Prototypes, and the Vintage Cup ' just to name a few.
Just south of Watkins Glen, is the second largest town in Schuyler County, Montour Falls. It hosts one of the most impressive waterfalls in the area ' the 165-foot Chequagua Falls, which can be viewed from the base of the falls right off of Main Street. It was the home to Queen Catharine Montour, for whom the town is named after, and is the resting place for her as well as Charles Cook. Charles Cook was instrumental in the formation of Schuyler County ' he built canals, hotels, St. Paul 's Church, Havana Bank and the People 's College (now know as NYS Academy of Fire Science).
Geneva is situated at the northern end of Seneca Lake ' home to Hobart College, the oldest college in western New York. It has many stately homes and centuries-old trees and is very near to two state parks, Seneca Lake State Park and Sampson State Park.
Ithaca, a very picturesque town at the southern end of Cayuga Lake, is the home of Cornell University and Ithaca College. Another well known town for its waterfalls ' deserving its infamous tagline 'Ithaca is Gorges. Several State Parks are near by ' Allan H. Treman State Marine Park, Buttermilk Falls State Park, Robert H. Treman State Park and Taughannock Falls State Park ' with a drop of 214 feet, one of the largest waterfalls east of the Rocky Mountains. Ithaca is also known as the cultural center of the Finger Lakes ' home to many museums, theater companies, orchestras, dance groups, music festivals, and much, much more. It is also the home of the ice cream sundae!
Hammondsport, originally called Pleasant Valley, is named after Lazarus Hammond who built its streets and village square in 1807. It is located at the southern end of Keuka Lake and is home to the first winery in the region, Pleasant Valley Wine Company, founded in 1860. Hammondsport was put on the viticultural map in 1867 when it received a gold metal for one of its champagne at the Vienna Exposition in Paris, France.
These historic communities with scenic situations all are tourist destinations, as is the village of Aurora, which is situated on the east shore of Cayuga Lake. Although not on one of the lakes, the nearby city of Corning is also a major destination for visitors, because of its famous glass museum and demonstrations. Similarly, the villages of Seneca Falls and Waterloo, although not on lakes, attract many to the several sites of the Women 's Rights National Historical Park and the National Women 's Hall of Fame.

very peaceful
July 22, 2012
My husband and I spent 3 nights at Catherines Cottages, we were there for our 30th anniversary. The cottage was very nice and clean, it was near enough to activities but far enough away to get away from the noise. A real treat to come home to at the end of a busy day, enjoyed sitting on the porch with a view of the creek and watching the squirrels play in the trees.

Summer Stay for 2 nights
August 9, 2011
We rented 3 of the 4 cabins for 7 adults and 4 children. Each cabin had 2 double beds, small table, small fridge, microwave, in one room and a shower in a separate room. Cottages appeared new and were in nice and clean condition. Our kids waded in the creek (bring swimshoes) and we roasted marshmellows over the fire pit -- firewood was available to purchase on-site. About 10 minute drive from the popular Watkins Glenn park, but local park that was only 2 minutes away (Havana Glen) was smaller but less crowded and you could even swim in the Glen's waterfall and there was a great playground - our kids enjoyed Havana Glen much better than the crowded Watkins Glen. Only complaints are that the cabins were a little small for 4 people so we were a bit crowded and the cabins were a little close to the main road so road noise could be heard. Owner was very nice and had many good suggestions, but he is selling the place to open a future brewery in town.

Catherine Cottages
July 30, 2010
We stayed here for three days in July. We found the cabins and property to be clean and well kept. We enjoyed the stay, the creek running behind, and the location was great for exploring the Finger Lakes area. The owners were helpful with suggestions for things to do in the area. Overall, a great stay.

Nice Outing

The cabin was very clean and the owner was informative and helpful. Great location to many outdoor activities as well as the wine tours around the lakes.

Perfect!
May 19, 2008
We were looking for a quiet place that was clean, neat, quaint, quiet, easily accessable and guest friendly with cooking facilities, close by walking trails and good proximity to Corning and wine country. It was all of the above with a wonderful breakfast assortment, a fire pit, grill & picnic table for each cabin, walking trails less than a 1/4 mile away AND on a beautiful creek. Wayne was a great host! (The website photos don't show how pretty the cabins/location are!)
Owner Supplied Testimonials

Your cabins are a delight! A perfect compliment to the wine trail region - a most comfortable destination after a day of wine tasting and falls watching. A blazing campfire with âs'moresâ and a dessert wine and an evening with the family all made this a most enjoyable weekend. Thanks!
The E.L. Smith Family, Clark Hills, NY
Great creekside spot, wish we could have had more than 1 night, but we got to cool off in the creek, saw ducklings, cardinals, and fish! We came from a big, crazy wedding so this was a perfect place to end - we'll be back!
Eve & Emmet, Los Angeles, CA
What a wonderful place! Especially coming from Niagara Falls - it's hordes of visitors! You have thought of everything to make a stay with you one to remember. The creek which we played in, the citronella candle on the porch, the fridge to chill our wine. The bed was cozy and your towels smelled so clean (not like hotel towels - which can scratch when using)!! Especially your fire pit, what a way to relax the evening away. I would recommend your cottages to all who want to enjoy the beautiful Finger Lakes. Thanks again!
Kristi & Tim, Cocoa Beach, FL
Thank you so much for a wonderful start to our vacation - spending a holiday weekend with family in great accommodations, what more could one ask for??!! The cabins are wonderful with great views. I think we may have to do this every Easter?! You guys hosted a great Easter weekend and it will be very hard to match! Thanks again for everything.
Joe, Kim, Reese & Mason, Orchard Park, NY
The cottages are truly charming. The setting is lovely. We came for the race, but there was so much more to see and do. I loved the park. The wineries were great fun. We even took a boat tour on the lake. If you're looking for good food, check out the Stone Cat Café on the east side of Seneca - we had a great time!
Don & Sherry, Carlisle, PA
My son and I came to the area for a 2-day track event at the Glen and l had a great time. Our 40' trailer (with two cars) and dually were accommodated by our host driveway (thanks again!) and the peace and quiet of the cabin were welcome after the noise at the track. We enjoyed our stay and the change from the usual hotel rooms! Thanks again for everything.
Wicklunds, Harvard, MA
As a traveling road rep - I spend many nights away from home (which is a cabin in the woods with a pond) so it was delightful to discover a home-away-from-home. Laura, thanks for the âwingâ tip at Maria's as I enjoyed them at the picnic table. Many thanks for your consideration in furnishing your cabins with great pillows and comfy beds! I look forward to returning here when working in this area. You're right - Life is Good at Catharine Cottages. Thank you!
N.Semmelmann, Chenango Forks, NY
As you know, it is Jaime's birthday weekend and we ended it in style here in our little home-away-from-home. We started our day by walking the gorge and had dinner afloat Captain Bill's dinner cruise. It was wonderful. But the best part of our mini-vacation was staying here at Catharine's. I wish we could stay longer. We really wanted to give someone a run for their money at a friendly game of horseshoes, but it was too late by the time we got back from dinner. So Jaime attempted a fire (haha) and then we cuddled in bed to end the perfect weekend. Jaime says you better practice your horseshoe game for when we come back!

Eric & I came for a weekend get-away (without the kids) and we weren't quite sure what to expect. We needn't have worried - we had a blast! We hiked the gorge, visited the track, nit a winery/micro-brewery and some antique shops. That was during the day - evenings were spent in front of the fire relaxing. Staying here added that extra âsomethingâ that made this weekend truly special - thanks!
