Oceanfront cottage on Schoodic Point
From $179 / night
|Per week:||$1,250 - $1,750|
Pets allowed: Yes
Make the last turn on the road when you get to the ocean and you've reached your destination. Don't worry about missing it. You can't go any farther without a boat. Sitting at the end of the lane this three bedroom cottage is in town but still off the beaten path so to speak. You'll watch the lobster boats pulling their traps in the morning and the resident eagles soaring overhead all day. From here you will be able to walk to all the shops, businesses and everything else that Winter Harbor has to offer. Or hike to the park to enjoy all it's natural treasures. Treat yourself this year. Experience a little bit of life in the slow lane and real downeast pleasures.

Throughout the year there are different programs, theaters, concerts, dances and many other cultural events mostly on weekends. Then during the summer there is an arts festival for two weeks which usually starts around the first of August.
During the tourist season free shuttle bus makes tours of park and area before returning. Less than a mile up Main Street is the entrance to the park. There is no entrance fee required. The view from the road that loops around the point is magnificent. You can while the day away relaxing and taking in the spectacular views of the islands, sea and wildlife. Walk the bluffs, wander out on the rocks and picnic or bring back mussels for dinner. Have a cook out or lobster bake and relax into the evening around the campfire if you like listening to the loons after dark at Fraziers Point where there are picnic tables and fire pits for barbecues.. On any given day you'll see lobster boats pulling in the days catch and eagles soaring about the harbor. On other days you can watch the sail boats from the Winter Harbor Yacht Club race.
Schoodic Head, the highest point. Its 440 foot peak offers panoramic views straight out into the open Atlantic Ocean, Frenchman Bay and Cadillac Mountain to the west. On a clear day you can see the Pettit Mannan lighthouse and preserve on the next peninsula over.
The most southern tip of Schoodic Point, has granite outcroppings and pounding surf. People come from all over to watch the surf as storms or hurricanes passing by sometimes hundreds of miles away break against the rocks and throw spray fifty feet or more in the air. It really is something to see. There is ample parking space for visitors and it is well worth the trip any day.
It's generally quiet here except for the lobster festival. Once a year the entire area goes on holiday. Usually the second Saturday in August. The day starts off with a 5k road race in the morning and ends with a parade in the evening. Of course there are lobster dinners and barbecues. It's always a good time.
I could go on and on but I met someone at the docks last year from NJ and he summed it up better than I can "its like being in heaven". Do yourself a favor this year, come see!
Hope you have a great time where ever you end up. ~ Wes

What a beautiful location and such a comfortable cottage. The grounds have beautiful gardens and our first night there was a full moon and a deer just happened to walk across the lawn as I was taking a picture! This is truly a piece of heaven

A lovely cottage, beautiful area and the most relaxing vacation ever. All the amenities were there and the owners were very helpful. I would definitely return.

We went as a group of three adults and a dog. From the moment we arrived to the moment drove off, we all enjoyed every moment of our stay. The cottage has everything that you need. It so peaceful and quiet that you get some really great sleeps. The owners Sylvia and Pete are lovely people. Sylvia made us an apple pie and Pete offers any assistance whether it's lending us his bicycles, or suggesting where to visit. The small town of Winter Harbor is just what small towns should be. There is a small grocery store, a few gift shops, couple of restaurants, post office, library, and a five and dime store. All within a five minutes walk from the cottage. Bar Harbor is a much larger and more touristy town is near Acadia National Park. It's a 40 minutes drive from the cottage but makes for a good day visit for shopping, eating and hiking. One of the best parts of our visit was an afternoon trip out on a private lobster boat to haul a lobster trap and to visit small refuge islands to see Atlantic puffins, seals and other wildlife. We highly recommend it. You can go on a large ferry like boat from Bar Harbor but we'd recommend going to a small town called Milbridge (about 25 minutes drive) and going with Captain Robertson. He takes a max of 6 people on his lobster boat. You never have to climb over each other to get a good view. He keeps his boat very clean. Honestly, we wish that one day sooner than later that we can come back and stay longer than a week.

The cottage was even better than we expected. It was a peaceful setting with fabulous views and daily visits from a bald eagle and loons. It was rural and yet Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park were within an hours' drive. The owners were incredibly accommodating. And fresh lobster for $4-6.00/lb.! We had a great week!
